Autumn has already begun as we feel the morning chill. Here in the last days of September in the UK we have had record rainfall as a months worth of rain fell in one day. My heart goes out to all those whose homes were flooded yet again in this unpredictable weather of 2012.
But today the sun is shining as it once again lifts our spirits to the beauty of an autumn day, as the blue skies and golden leaves start to form upon the trees.
I’m just recovering from a virus infection which knocked me sideways for a while, but I am back to feeling better again and wanted to share with you some of the beauties of Autumn as I took a walk on the 12th of September.. seems an age ago now as I walked among my favourite Trees.. I snapped a few pictures along my walk.
Here are some of my all time favourite bramble fruits the Blackberry, I like nothing better than making a Blackberry Pie with a few Apples mixed in with either custard or cream..
Here is a Pie I baked a while back as we have lots of Blackberries in our allotments, which I freeze..This one is one I made earlier ..I hope to add the recipe on my Recipe page shortly for those interested.
I just love Wild Roses and here are the Rosehips which are a very good source of vitamin C. Did you know that you can dry Rosehips, making a herb tea? ( which often get added to commercially produced herbal teas ) Also if you like a Winter Tipple how about Sloe Gin? I personally cannot stand either the taste or the smell of Gin. But to make Sloe Gin go to my Recipe page I have added a simple recipe there which you can find Here if you scroll down far enough..
Hawthorn grows in abundance in our hedgerows here, They delight us in the spring with their white blossoms and are full again this year of the Haws the red berries, a sure sign that the birds will have plenty to eat as Winter approaches. I didn’t know until I read in my Tree Book that you can eat the flesh of the Haws if you get rid of the stones, you can make a jelly by simmering the fruit with a few crab apples..
Elderberry is another hedgerow fruit well known for making Elderberry Wine. I well remember an Aunt of mine who made both Elderflower Wine and Elderberry Wine another good source of vitamins.
In my childhood and when my children were small We would often go Hazelnut picking, My Dad never went anywhere in late September without nutcrackers in his pocket .. I loved picking the nuts and couldn’t wait until they had turned from their green to brown in their husks. And my childhood treat was to painstakingly shell these sweet nuts often immature to sprinkle with salt on a saucer and demolish in a matter of seconds.. I so love the memory of nutting with my Dad.. Along with collecting Chestnuts and walking in the early morning mists to find the Field Mushrooms… here is a nice link to the kind we used to find.
Dad was something of an expert in collecting Wild Mushrooms and he would provide many a villager with a heavy bag of field mushrooms, and I have known them to be as big as the frying pan . ( Note when eating wild Mushrooms you must be experienced in identifying them as there are many poisonous fungi which unless you know can be wrongly identified )
Lastly I took a few pictures of the Acorns.. From young Oak trees which lined the walk you see in the first picture, we noted that many had a fungal disease and seemed to be dying an many had these peculiar malformed Acorns on them and they were not like anything I have seen on trees here before.
Here are the growths on the Acorns in this Picture , I Googled Deformed Acorns and apparently its known as a ‘Knopper Gall’ caused by a tiny gall wasp Andricus quercuscalicis. it is a recent colonist to Britain in the last 30 yrs or so, and was first spotted in Northamptonshire in 1961. You learn something new every day!..
I hope you enjoyed a little walk with me today… Its great that the Rain has stopped at last and its promising to be a good day tomorrow Saturday so I’m making the most of it and intent to go out in the Fresh Air again to blow the last of this Virus away before more Rain on Sunday..
Take care and Have a great weekend all of you ~Sue

*sigh* you have the most amazing walks Sue….I need to start again….
I love Autumn…even here it is beautiful….still a little hot but it is slowly cooling off…
I loved walking around Blue’s area (lancashire, blackpool, rishton?) he took me to so many beautiful woods, parks, gardens…
your walk took me back there…
I didn’t know you could eat Hawthorn berries either, if you make jelly, tell me what it tastes like Okay?
my Elderberries have two seasons here…the flowers smell so good….
the deer like them too it seems ….
I do hope you are feeling better…but then I think your walk was probably the best medicine for you, it always is for me….
I need to go wander outside a bit…
Thank you Sue….
always a pleasure to take a walk with you…
Take Care…

Beautiful place to stroll along DW….You could be lost there and survive a while on all those yummy goodies…It is such a good feeling to walk along munching on this and that….Elderberries are wonderful for winter!!!! Keep those babies around…I am glad you are feeling better now. Go slow and recuperate at a calm pace. Keep the light glowing at OWR while I am gone. I shall miss everybody. Hoping for a few days of hearty laughing and good food 🙂 Take care and blessings to you….VK

The blackberries and others look so very good all I can say is “wow”. The pie must have been yummy! I would give anything to have a piece right now! The abundant rain you had was good for something Dreamwalker. Now is the payoff.
Eat well; live well. love always, Eddie

Yes the Pie was Yummy Eddie, Well the abundant rain spoiled alot of other crops this year Eddie as we also had the Wettest ever June on record, so we lost all strawberries, raspberries, and the brasica family suffered, the brussels-spouts have all blown and the cauliflowers and broccoli too..
But we had a bumper crop of Runner Beans, Peas, Sweetcorn, and Blackberries have been fine too.. so swings and roundabouts as is always in nature…
We are very lucky to be able to grow our own.. 🙂

I am so pleased you are feeling better and back to outdoors again.
Your pictures leave me breathless, despite my love of summer these are simply beautiful. Back when I could still tip now and again Gin was my drink of choice but I can simply not abide Sloe Gin, why ruin a good thing? But making your own, how ambitious!

Im laughing at the creepies in the blackberries..
I soak them overnight in salted water if there are any small grubs they usually come out and I rinse very well and if not well added protean never hurt anyone LOL 🙂

Wow bring it on I want all of your recipes
writing down Sue and don’t forget to add
more pictures too mmmmmmmmmmmm
I could just eat some right now with some
custard, not too thick, noooo not me I am
talking about the custard 🙂 😉 lol
You are right about the rain it has been so
wet this year but like you say we need to be
thinking of all those that have been flooded
out and worse, some houses are now being
demolished as the foundations have been
swept away, it’s quite unbelievable really 😦
I like your posting Sue now go and fetch our
umbrella and wellies out, I think an Autumn
stroll is called for 🙂 Have a wicked weekend 🙂

thank you for sharing your walk with us. There’s nothing like a wander outside to make us stop and notice the beauty of our world. I love blackberries and never thought to mix then with apples. I do make a rockin’ blackberry and rasberry jam though. We have a lot of elderberries and for a few years I made them into jelly. Now I leave them for the birds and they seem quite appreciative as I am getting a greater variety of songbirds than ever. Take care of you!

Great post Sue, full of interesting tips and snippets that bring Autumn nature to life in a most seasonally warming way! Lovely pics too this post has a real feel-good sense to it 🙂 Not to say your others don’t – but you know what I mean…I am a great lover of autumn 🙂 I hope you’ve recovered fully from your virus now, I nearly had one of my own on my laptop after my twitter account was hacked – it’s taken till now to sort it all out and now I have a cracking headache…maybe the virus got loose after all! Autumn -proper is very late arriving this year, they say it’s because of such a late patchy summer…I look forward to the leaves exploding in their arrays of colours eventually! In the meantime I loved the walk we went on with you – hope it cleared your head and left you feeling fresh and renewed, the virus swiftly banished! Oh…that comment about your dad not going out without a pair of nutcrackers made me smile 🙂 Autumn and nuttting go together so well 😉 Wolfie hugs, x

Summer was certainly disappointing here, from a budding gardeners point of view but I’ve noticed many bushes laden with blackberries, recently ~ wild nature is obviously great at adapting to variable weather conditions! Sadly, my Mother’s old jelly pan won’t work on my induction hob, or I might be tempted to preserve some of nature’s harvest in jams and jellies, like she used to. Thank you for sharing your walk with us, Sue. I trust the virus will run it’s course soon, so that your energy can return. 🙂
