Ferry Crossing from Oban to the Isle of Mull

I hope you are all enjoying your week so far? Well here at last I have managed to find time in-between my catch ups here on WP and gardening, plus I started  a knitting project just before I went on holiday which I am now three quarters of the way to finishing.. My hands are rarely still smiles..

Ferry

This photo I did not take.. Photo credit is HERE and more about How one can get across to the Isle of mull and the Isle of Iona is found also at this site. Credit Source:http://www.welcometoiona.com/index.php?id=10

So I hope to tell you this journey in picture format.. So all aboard the Ferry as we set sail from the town of Oban  heading for the Isle of Mull and then later that day to travel to the Isle of Iona.. But today’s post is all about that Ferry ride and the Isle of Mull.

The water was calm as it reflected the blue of the sky

The water was calm as it reflected the blue of the sky, and we could not have picked a better day for our trip to the Isle of Mull and Iona.

Castle Dunollie belonged the MacDougall clan. It was gifted to his Son Dugall when Somerled Lord of the Isle died in the year of  1164.  Its foundations are said to date back to the Iron Age.  Dugall became the first chief of one of the most ancient clans in Scotland. And this small castle is steeped in History more of which can be found at this Link  about the families  eventual down fall to the supremacy of Robert The Bruce. Better known perhaps as Braveheart..

The History of Wallace and Robert the Bruce can be found at this Link    I hope those who are interested in Scottish History do follow the links, as it makes this journey even more interesting to see the places steeped in so much history.

We travelled on and I was clicking away at everything that came into view  if you click each photo within the gallery you will find narrative below them. This Light house came into view next

This was another Castle which appeared on our left as we traveled to Mull

Another Zoom shot.. This is Duart Castle.. more of which I will explain about the scaffolding below.

Another Zoom shot.. This is Duart Castle.. more of which I will explain about the scaffolding below.

Duart Castle  greets you from the ferry when you sail out of Oban harbour.

When we sailed by we could see as we got closer that scaffolding now encircled this old Castle. I read up on returning home and because of the huge amounts of rain we had in 2013’14 the castle lost four ceilings due to water penetration through the chimneys. There is now an appeal on going for donations to help restore it.. This castle is still open and again more can be found at the link above.

The Isle of Mull is for next time.. Wishing you All a wonderful week

~Sue~

I had not realized how barren the land is in Scotland! Is all of Scotland like this or is it just in certain areas? The history you provided is spellbinding, and I thank you, Sue, for providing the links. I’m happy for you that you took a well deserved vacation!!! ❤

No I can assure you Amy not ALL of Scotland is like this. The big Cities such as Glasgow and Edinburgh are thronged with people high-rise buildings old and new and are filled with their every day city problems too which most of our cities have.. Such as crime and drugs.
The Highlands are the remote places and where I was staying in the village of Tyndrum its part of the National Park. The mountains and Highlands Lochs and Glens and the coastline are magical places.. Teaming with wildlife, and are just breath taking to see.. Each day the hills can look different as the Light alters.. And yes we were both ready for this weeks break away Amy.. Thank you my friend we enjoyed every second of it xxx ❤

I remember visiting the little theatre on Mull, and seeing a wonderfully amusing performance of a Moliére play there. Your splendid images have me all nostalgic for the places I used to visit in the Western Highlands years ago. Lovely to see where you’ve been enjoying yourself of late, dear Sue. H ❤

How wonderful Hariod.. Time unfortunately meant we sped through Mull all too quickly, but what I did see I fell in love with. I am delighted that your memory banks were jolted into remembering these lovely times on Mull Hariod. I love it when we are transported back in time for a while to fill up our senses again.. Many thanks dear dear friend ❤ xxx

So I too enjoy looking up the places I visited and absorbing deeper as I read, I then take it in more.. So pleased you enjoyed the links.. 🙂 it makes the effort of putting the post together all the more worth while when I get feedback from my readers the links are being read. Thank you xx

Incredible places with much history Sue. I loved the Duart Castle, pity about the rain damage, but that seems to go hand in hand with those very old buildings.
Mind you, they have withstood the test of time in themselves.
And you must have pleased the old God’s, as you said, you seem to have had a great deal of sunny weather 😀

Yes I think we must have ordered the fine weather.. I did send up a pre-curser lol.. Asking for clement weather, so the Sunny days were a bonus.. I expected dull and cloudy along with rain this time of year.. The week after I looked on the forecast and it had nothing but rain with temperature dropping.. So we were very fortunate to pick that week..
Yes Duart Castle I am sure will be renovated and be brought back to its former glory.. Tourism in Scotland is high and I have no doubts enough funds will be raised to restore it.. So pleased to be able to share it with you Mark.

So pleased to hear that Paul… The Isle of Mull is a beautiful Island and oh so perfect for those who want to detach from everything.. Given another Life! lol.. I would choose to be a hermit in my cottage among the sheep and cattle growing my veggies, carding and spinning wool. Knitting and painting those beautiful views.. LOL.. 🙂 But I will make do with my visits from time to time.. As I get older I also enjoy my creature comforts too… haha..

Hi Kim, it was cool in the wind on top open deck, but believe me I have seen days when in Oban you could not even see the ferry in port for mist and rain and the waters can be very choppy.. So this journey was a real treat. Thank you for travelling with me Kim xxx

So fun you got to take this journey! We, too took a ferry on Ireland’s west coast. Saw dolphins as well! And lots of castles in that country which are in the process of being restored. Scaffolding was common. But also saw a few ‘already restored’ castles which was quite the treat! ❤

LOL oh you lucky girl you..This was one of the reasons I went up on top of the ferry to see if I could see any Dolphins as they have been spotted there.. I did see a Sea Otter, but no Dolphins.. And I bet those Castles were a real treat too ❤

Dolphins (despite the ferry was called something with that name in it! – duh) were the Last thing I expected to see in those chilly waters! First thought it a whale – then ‘it’ became ‘them’ – bigger than our spinner dolphins here in HI. And yes, castles were amazing! I actually stayed in one (feather bed, to boot!) back in 1974 – the last time I ventured to your side of the pond. But they are COLD places, too. Amazing to restore them, however – to honor history in that way. Shameful our own country is not so attentive in that regard. ❤

Yes some of the Castles are not as pristine as they once were Ian.. Though some are in beautiful condition.. I wish I could say that the ‘uprisings’ around the world had died down, but sadly history keeps on repeating itself there. Wishing you a wonderful week Ian.. Blessings Sue ❤

Each of us, carries within us the capacity to change the world in small ways for better or worse. Everything we do and think affects the people in our lives, and their reactions in turn affect others As the effect of a seemingly insignificant word passes from person to person, its impact grows and can become a source of great joy, inspiration, anxiety, or pain. Your thoughts and actions are like stones dropped into still waters, causing ripples to spread and expand as they move outward.. I hope that I can send a few ripples out via the web of life, as we each of us weave the threads together... Welcome to my Sanctuary of Peace and Love...
