Hobbit Round House Due to be demolished~Friday Facts

Sometimes you just have to speak out against Rules.. And While I so understand the need to have planning permission, Can any of you reading this see the need to demolish this perfectly blending home built of natural materials on privately owned land. In Pembrokeshire Wales UK,  Hand built by the couple living in it?  Pembrokeshire County Council and the Welsh Assembly: Grant retrospective planning permission to Charlie and Meg's roundhouse

Have you taken a look around your towns and cities in the UK or your area and seen the monstrosities that are built, do they blend in with the countryside, do they take into account an eco friendly environment? Just take a look inside this fabulous place built with natural woods

I  know I seem to be posting a few petitions recently and received this one from Change.org . I only got around to reading today having sat in my overcrowded email box for 8 days. So I am appealing to you to click the links and ask if you would sign this petition…  We are being squeezed left right and Centre and this piece of architecture should be given a prize for its innovation not be condemned to be pulled down, this would benefit no one .

The petition has gone world wide, so I am asking you to spread it a little further by signing and passing it on..  Many thanks in anticipation of your support for this couple.

Below is the wording on the petition email and the links to press to join the petition ..  Love and Blessings and Thank you Sue

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Locals call it the Hobbit House, for Charlie, Meg and one-year old Eli, it is their family home.
Charlie and Meg built their home entirely by hand using all natural materials on Charlie’s parents’ private land in North Pembrokeshire. The unique, environmentally friendly house has become well known in the local area.
However Charlie and Meg built their home without planning permission and now the Council have told the couple that they must return the land to its previous condition. This means destroying the house that they took a year to build.
The couple have applied for retrospective planning permission and Meg has started a petition on Change.org to try and save her home.
We have built a home on private land in the area that we both grew up in. It is built out of low impact, natural and recycled materials. In building the house we have not caused any negative effects on the surrounding area or its population, we have simply created shelter as is our human right. We understand that the planning system is there for a reason, however we feel that big steps need to be taken in order to make low impact living more achievable and accessible to the population. Our application contains a One Planet Development management plan which sets out our plans for living lightly on the land. This management plan follows One Planet Development Practical Guidance Technical Advice Note 6 dated October 2012 guidelines set out by the Welsh Assembly and therefore our home is in accordance with these targets.
Over 75,000 people are supporting Meg’s petition. What do you think? To help the family defend their home sign Meg’s petition.
Thank you,
Katherine and the UK Change.org team
Update… Here is the link to the One Planet Development Practical Guide Technical Advice Note 6 guidlines which this couple complied with
    What a beautiful home! It’s a dream place, they should definitely get all the support. A pity, they could’ve spared themselves all the trouble by getting the permit first.
    Done….I’ve seen this story and it both enrages me and disgusts me. It is time for Government to get OUT of people’s lives! This is a perfect house for the new world. It is the people who make these insane rules who are not part of the new world in any way. Hope these poor people get to keep their beautiful house. I’ve pretty much had it with what is taking place these days. It is all getting soooo old!
    What a sweet, sweet house Sue. Thanks so much for your post. I really feel for the people but also see that others may take liberties with planning permission if they let this go. Having said that, many others do take liberties (with horrible building works) and nothing is done about it! A lack of even handedness is a big problem. I really hope the house can stay as it is just so quaint. Much love Sue xx
      Hi Ruth, good to see you here, and yes I agree many do take liberties, and I guess we all know I am sure of those who are favoured within local councils who get planning permission granted… But I can see no reason that this property should be destroyed, just so one or two can say it was my jobs worth.. Where then is this couple going to live.. Putting more pressure upon an already escalating problem of homelessness,.. Only today Shelter revealed that over 80,000 children are already living in temporary shelters due to foreclosures and rent arrears.. Those living on the edge of poverty in the UK is growing daily… Its something I feel passionate about …
      Love and Blessings and hope you are enjoying the much welcome Sun of today.. at least we are in our part of the world 🙂
    It’s all about control. The governments of the western world are out of control. If they were endangering somebody else I could see the point, but this is private property and they choose to live in it, so I don’t think it should matter if they’re living in a cardboard box as long as it’s theirs and they’re happy.
    Just more government intervention and meddling in things that are none of their business.
    Done. I followed the story of the Hobbit house, but missed the story that it was going to be demolished. What a shame if it is. The people need to take back the zoning offices and rewrite the rules. Case in point, I wanted to build a tiny house on land here in town, but wasn’t allowed to because a home has to be a minimum sq ft and mine would have been too small. I looked into one on wheels, but then I was refused because no trailers are permitted in the towns limits. It’s crazy.
      Yes Lois the planning rules need to be rewritten I agree, and take into account self builds and those who like this young couple show initiative in building eco friendly and on property privately owned, where its doing no harm… Unlike the big builds which rip the hedgerows and trees up to build their estates .. And leave surface water no where to flow so the roads get flooded..
      One law for one, and one law for another often seems to the layperson the case… And of course lets never forget the fact that Money can do a lot of talking! too .
        I don’t see the laws changing any time soon as the construction companies will fight to keep their jobs. I do get that we need agencies that check electrical for safety in new builds, but the rules get ridiculous. My grandfather converted two bedrooms into one where he added a handicap bathroom into the room for my grandmother. He was so frustrated with the regulations which go so far as to tell you the number of inches a sink must be from a toilet (among others). He ranted quite a bit to me as his layout allowed my grandmother to be able to wash her hands before he lifted her up to take her out of the bathroom area. But with the regulations the sink, which would have been far enough away to allow easy access to the toilet, was not permitted. As a result he then had to lift her off the toilet, transfer her to a wheel chair which he then pushed to the sink for her to wash. We don’t need any of these kinds of intrusions into our homes, just like this young family who built a lovely home that honored the land and the way they wanted to live.
      hi Alex, yes I understand perfectly about the need for legislation on planning , But I think in this instance and no doubt in others, where I know homes or extensions have had to be knocked down… This is as everyone can see a self built purpose home which I am positive will serve no one to demolish it…
    I have seen this story and signed the petition before, Sue ~ it is a beautiful house and I trust the occupants will receive retro~permission, it seems like the only sensible way forward, in this case. I guess we do have to have some planning regulations, for reasons already mentioned ~ but some of the schemes that ARE passed defy logic (and good taste!) 🙂
    Thank you Sue for sharing…I’ve signed too!
    I was thinking…could it be the reason why they want to tear it down is because of a fire hazard? But then, it makes no sense. If that’s the case then the reason they’ve given doesn’t fit, does it?
    It saddens me in my country where all they do is cut and destroy the land to build, build build…..and for no purpose but to build…because someone needs to fatten their wallet a little more…the prices of these places are ludicrous as well…so it’s not even affordable for most of us who live in the city!
    It’s even worse when they demolish old beautiful buildings….instead of refurbishing them with love..it’s part of our history….sigh..the day we fear our history is not a good thing.
      True Shree, there are many monstrosities of buildings built which are eyesores both in cities and in the countryside… If you can see some of these so called modern day homes being built at the speed they go up with basic wooden insulated shells then bricked on the outside.. A fire within any of these modern properties would leave an empty shell … as many do not have brick built interior walls.. only panels so thin a nail to hold a picture up in doesn’t stay put! We watched some being built near to our regular walk and watched with horror how they were put together….
      Thank you Shree for signing for them .. Lets wish them luck!
    Hi Sue, I agree…it’s ridiculous that a lovely, eco-friendly house like this should be demolished! Some pen-pushers are so afraid to have what they perceive as their ‘power’ undermined, that they see any innovation as a threat. It’s a very sad state of affairs. People should be able to live the way they want to, especially in eco-friendly houses like this.
But the red tape and bureaucracy has to be seen to keep control… I so wish this young couple all the best in their appeal and their continued fight for their rights to have a home..
      I understand none attachment Eddie to most things, but this as been their home for over a year.. and it seems senseless to destroy it when ways and means can be reached to end their initial mistake of not seeking outlying planning permission ..
      I think half of its because they do not want us taking the initiative into our own hands and self building eco homes…. The Big housing corporations are making millions I am sure from their builds, and usually there is a big incentive given to local planners/councils to approve such developments . Its no longer just about rules, but how much profits are made ALL round.. Blessings dear Eddie and like you, I send all love and peace and hope it comes to a happy conclusion for all to save face
    A few months ago I learned of this hobbit house and helped spread a petition to save it. I have read elsewhere today, December 20, 2013. (url below) that “…the Pembrokeshire County Council ordered the couple to demolish their home because it was built without planning permission.” and “… the couple yesterday lost their appeal against a planning enforcement notice telling them to tear their home down.” and “The order gives the couple two months to return the land to its previous condition.” I think we should spread this story again and hope or pray that we generate enough energy to bring a change to allow the house to stand. peace and hugs.
      Hi Robert, thank you for bringing again this story to my attention, I read the articular and it saddens me that Red-Tape is really all the issue is about.. for the regulators of planning can allow monstrosities to be built or even allow homes to be built on Greenbelt land if it suits them… But they are obviously digging in their heels on this one and not giving in as it will open a president where others can build on private land without the relevant permission of planning application… Bah- Humbug!!.. Many thanks for taking the time to comment and to click the follow button…
    Petition signed and information passed on to others – – sad how quietly, through the guise of ‘making people safe’ and ‘improving our base quality of life’ speeches, law makers in all corners of the world have made it virtually impossible for folks to live in a sustainable fashion – – many here in the US are fighting for the right to build ‘tiny homes’ – and find issues with where they can build, minimum requirements for size and insurance coverage – – these kinds of laws must be changed to reflect a new paradigm – Living within the planet’s means!         Just getting caught up – I did find it interesting – there were 7 other petitions started for their cause – and various number of folks who signed each – they need to consolidate those multiple petitions – I found it interesting that her petition had nearly 89,000 signatures, and yet, it showed still over 65,000 to go — did she really need over 160,000 people to agree with her for the council to back down?
        Reminds me of another blogger who was going through the red tape when they purchased an historic home and wanted permission (after all their loving care and attention to save the place from wrack and ruin) from the local powers that be to run a bed and breakfast to defray the cost they had and would incur in saving the place AND to share their love of history with guests – – THAT council actually looked at how many “Facebook” likes they got, to see if they should approve their petition to rezone for commercial or not – –
        The world has gone mad, mad, mad – – -LOL
