Respect: Throughout Time

Thank you goes to Linda for her idea of bringing us together for this

Time Machine Blogging Challenge.

Directions: Pick a time in your life that was critical to your development. You can go back or forwards in time. It can be real or imagined. After all, it is real if you imagine it!

Choose an idea or a skill or a value you hold dear in the present and infuse it into that time period.

Share your story of what happens to positively impact your life.

Stepping in The Time Machine I am in 1997:

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

True Story

The Television cameras were pointing at me as my turn came around the table to speak up, in front of me was President Chandrika Kumaratunga. Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga As The President of Sri Lanka.jpgShe had a wonderful green sari on and was smiling profusely. My mouth went dry, was I really in Sri Lanka?

How had I arrived here? was this really me about to take my turn to speak?

Time stopped as I took a breath and my mind went blank!

I had travelled a long way upon my journey Sometimes our ‘Journey’ takes us along various routes and detours but each road is one of discovery

Time travel back to 1969:

But Dad, I don’t want to work in a factory”, can’t I go to art college?”.. I wanted to say, but I knew it was worthless, even my teacher had tried to persuade my parents about further education, but to no avail. I had to respect my Dad’s wishes, that was how it was.

I was the eldest of 5 siblings and I was needed to bring in a wage, and the factories brought in the best wages.. And it was either the sewing factory or the Poultry factory; both had been on our  girls school antennary to visit in our last term as we were given ideas for career paths.

The slaughtering of chickens had sickened me, and the stench of it had stayed in my nostrils the whole day. No way was I going to work there!.

So at the age of 15 I left school to embark upon the next step of life out in the big wide world. I was plunged into an alien world of whirring machines, learning new names for them as well as new skills to operate them .

I would learn to mask my embarrassment of the more forward thinking girls, and laugh with a grin upon my face while noticeably turning red over their teasing  of a shy girl..

I would learn to master many skills within the textile trade over the next 30 years, and I would wear many hats with many names within the clothing industry, From machinist, I climbed through the various ranks to Training Manager. During this time I also held the title of Mrs, and Mum, to two children with a Mum break of around 5 years in between.

The one trait that got me through all of those years was to Respect all as  equals. No one was lesser or more than myself. I didn’t adopt habits of swearing or cursing and surprisingly in every place I have worked, while being very open minded, as I can laugh along with the rest over a good joke, others would always curb their language when I was around and would respect my dislike of its use. I could also communicate with top executives and was not afraid to voice  respectful opinions and ideas to help production costs

I ran many teams over the years putting in new styles, and would overhear some wonderful stories, that would make your hair curl Smile  and it would often make me smile when I walked back and forth to hear conversations alter as girls would say “watch your language Sue’s about!”.. I would never expect anyone to do something I couldn’t achieve myself, and would sit at any machine on the factory floor and work for long lengths of time to show girls I could earn my money in the minutes provided in Piece-Work. And if I couldn’t I would get it retimed.. ( as I was the one with the stop watch!) Winking smile

I would act as negotiator in Union disputes and always tried to treat others fairly. Earning the respect of both parties involved.  I would hire, and yes at times have to fire, I would represent Industry as we linked with Education and took pride in being part of the first Business and Education Partnerships in schools, which helped create links for work experience for students in our area. I would put on fashion shows which I helped students design and then sew under supervision in our factories.. Life was Full on..

So began the mutual respect between us, and I was pleased to call this real Team-Working at its best.

“I speak to everyone in the same way, whether he is the garbage man or the president of the university.”
Albert Einstein

A collection of memories

A collection of memories

Fast-forward to 1997: I was back in the room with camera pointing straight at me

The day had  already been non-stop. I was here on a business trip and for this first week I was part of the London Chamber of Commerce Trade delegation, we had been to a lavish reception the evening before at the British High Commission in Colombo, And had visited a wonderful building in the morning where the prices of Tea had been bought and sold to listen to someone else speak.

I cleared my throat,… the person next to me finished what they were saying and I took a sip of water. I began speaking my rehearsed lines, but the only thing I could hear was the drumming in my ears from the pounding of my heart.

“ My name is……… and I am the Training Manager for…………… We have Nine Divisions World Wide and employ at the present time 2,980 people. We are here to familiarise ourselves with current sewing training, and to meet with local colleagues in Sri Lanka. We are also here to familiarise’ ( I knew I was repeating myself and I could feel my colour rise ) ‘ourselves with training cultures with the view to source training availabilities by visiting colleges.”

I turned to my colleague M, who was the Training Development Executive for help, and she then took over to fill in with more details; the next delegate spoke as the cameraman turned his lens on them. The whole event was surreal.

The month prior we had nearly cancelled our visit due to a bomb exploding in the Capital of Colombo by the Tamil Tigers. To be honest thinking back I never had given the world of politics much heed, so wrapped up within my own world of work had I been. It would be later I would find out more about this fascinating Woman before me in the Green Sari  and how tragedy had struck her  different members of her family and how later another bomb explosion was to take her sight of one eye. I have huge respect for this lady.

The warmth of everyone I met  in Sri Lanka had a huge impact upon me for  along while to come.. I saw how the other half lived as they washed their clothes in the river, and saw how many lived on so little. I saw the rubbish piles on the streets in our travels, and the heavy carts both people and cows pulled along. I marvelled how the children walked to school all neat and tidy in their uniforms, and held my breath often as we travelled the long distances to our Factory bases along roads where no rules seemed to apply, and where Cows  were the only ones who seemed to have rights of way.

What struck me beyond any thing else, was that most of the time the people smiled.. They were courteous and respectful and even though they had nothing much their happiness radiated out and was contagious..

I saw the contrast of how the rich lived with the lavishness splashed out for those in business at the reception we were given in the British High Commission and the poverty so many endured just a few miles away.

For those of you who may be thinking our firm exploited these girls, let me say their factory conditions were newer and better than our own in the UK, They were purpose built on new industrial sites.  We were there to help set up training which would get these sewing machinists recognised as skilled machinist, Ours were not the sweat shops we see all too often on foreign shores..  Many families relying on their incomes and our firm also provided free medical care which extended to their immediate families.

I left the industry for good in 2004, it was to be the same year that the Earth quake hit on Boxing Day December 26th. Where thousands perished.  I remember sending my colleagues messages. And later learnt many who had worked within my old company had lost their lives that day.   I took with me the respect I have always had for others and applied it within my daily life.. Both with people and with Nature and our Animal Kingdom..

If we  all of us had more respect for each other the world would not be as it is today, I have great respect for all throughout all walks of life..

Its up to each of us to learn to respect not only others but to remember to also respect ourselves

We are all of us worthy of respect!

Regardless of what backgrounds we have come from or what religion we follow or the colour of our skin

WE ARE ONE

We need to see the truth of others lives and not the swaying that the media does. They can’t help but twist and sensationalise everything to such a degree that what we think is normal is far from the truth.
I wonder if we could steal a tv station 🙂
Mind you, in Australia we have an indigenous tv station that is totally run to show their culture and way of life, to really see the truth of their journey.
    Great post Sue.

Memories of losing so many in Earthquake shake and keep shaking to the core as the victims are remembered but the lessons of living you took with you, Sue, seem so worthwhile. Hope your daughter returns home with bags filled with good experiences and human growth.

Interesting view of your Time machine, journey along career path from teenage to the cataclysmic year 2004. The refining influence of the harsh realities and squalor you happened to see around in your business tour to Sri Lanka would strike a chord in those steeped in values of humanism. 26th December happens to be my wife’s birthday and I recall forgetting to wish her on that fateful day in 2004; the omission dawned on me only when I felt something amiss seeing her pull a long face, and my son, who was then in university pursuing engineering studies, suddenly trooped in with his birthday greeting. A little later, the TV started flashing news of Tsunami wreaking its havoc. Needless for me to add how the rest of the day turned out to be…best wishes, Sue…

Thanks for sharing your story, Sue. It is fascinating. Even though you did not go to art college, which sounds tragic since you are so gifted in painting, you stayed a long time in the sewing industry and climbed the career ladder and did many great contributions. That career brought forth all your other talents in sewing, coordinating, negotiating, and treating people with respect. What a journey!

    Much respect,

Thank you Karin, perhaps I stayed Too Long within the sewing trade.. and Life tried to show me another route, and when I didn’t listen my health thought it would step in to change my path 🙂 that time I listened 🙂 .. And I agree with you, Were it not for the path I had within that long career, I would not have gained the skills to apply both within my Spiritual path of public speaking within my Demo’s as a medium within Spiritualist centres, or the charisma to speak to people which helped me enormously communicate with those I later would work with who had learning difficulties.. Each skill enabled and prepared me for what was to come.. And in some respects here within my blogging world.. 🙂 I am so thankful you saw this, and I thank you Karin for being part of my WP journey 🙂

As I type with tears strewn down my cheeks, I have to say that you never fail to amaze me Sue. Having to leave school at only 15 to work in the factories despite your desire to go to Art School. Following along your path from the UK to Sri Lanka, I am so impressed with the qualities inherent in you that you continued to cultivate as time moved forward. Kudos to you for establishing your principles and sticking to them regardless of the situation.

It sure seems that while your path was not your first choice, you handled yourself well and accomplished so much for the outer world and your inner being. It is evident in your character and is a huge part of who you truly are. Thank you so much for this moving post about respect. Simply put, well done!

    Many hugs and abundant love,

Please I hope those tears dear Linda are not ones that felt sorry for me aged 15.. For back in 69 that was the school leaving age if you went to secondary school.. We had a two tier system back then… If you failed your 11 plus ( aged 11years ) you went to secondary school, if you passed you went to grammar school and were more likely to go onto college and university!.. But those whose teachers thought were bright could go on to take their GCE’s I wasn’t allow the choice.. 🙂 If you are unsure of what they are, more can be found HERE
Yes I am sure there was a Divine Plan in there somewhere Linda.. 🙂 as I probably needed some lessons along the way 🙂
I try to be true to me… I am far FAR from perfect.. but then if I were, I would not be on my Earth Walk! 🙂
Thank you so much for your kind comments.. they mean a lot to me.. Hugs Sue xxx

I enjoyed this post very much, Sue. One section I loved was how as a leader you put yourself into the seat to be sure what you were asking the others to produce was reasonable. I worked nights on an assembly line during the last year of college, after a work-study rotation had ended, and know how challenging it can be. But that is the type of leadership that I think people respect. How great that it took you to such interesting places, and that you’ve got the opportunity now to continue exploring your artistic ideas. I think it takes a very strong person to work in such a world and keep such an outlook as you have sustained. Bravo!

    Peace

      Dear Michael,
Thank you so much, Yes I think for most part that is why I was well respected.. I would sit for hours tweaking machines with mechanics to get the best quality performances out of them, and often Mechanics would blame girls for the errors produced by machines.. 🙂 I would often step in sit down and either confirm it was a mechanical or operator fault. And Mechanic’s soon realised they couldn’t pull the wool over my eyes, as did the girls..
It served me well knowing how each machine operated.. For I worked we designers for 5 years making garments from scratch to completion, Doing each operation within production myself.
If you worked on an assembly line, you know how hard you have to keep going to keep up, and how Quality plays such an important role within production. Thank you so much for taking the time to read, and I hope to soon be reading your own contribution to this challenge.. 🙂
      Blessings Sue

What a rich story ~ and I very much enjoyed your insights and feeling about Sri Lanka and how your writing and thoughts put us in the same frame of mind, and also allowing us to see different situations from a perspective that otherwise we could not have envisioned. This is great writing, and also showing that life will take you along a path whether planned or not, and it is best to make the best of it with kindness and creativity.

I appreciate you seeing Randall how life’s plan always has a route for us.. Some of us allow ourselves to walk within it’s flow, while others while given a choice can take a while to find the right path, having taken detours along the way..
Life always has a lesson to teach, seeing from a different perspective and observing, I think we both appreciate the richness we see within poverty.. For we see something the western world lacks.. We see fulfilment within simplicity. which makes me eternally grateful for all that I have. Many thanks for your compliments and I thank you that you thought this a ‘great write’ 🙂

Big smiles here Hariod.. You will notice this Elephant and rider upon a road.. We spied him coming towards us as we travelled from one destination to another.. We asked our driver to stop.. While my colleague and I spoke to the Man who was riding it.. He spoke broken English.. This was a working elephant and very dusty was he.. And to be fair the Man did ask us did we want to get up for a ride.. We declined, due to the colour of our trousers 🙂 … We both gave him a tip for allowing us to take photo’s I think we made his day as much as he made ours.. As the driver said what we gave him would have taken a week to earn!!.. such was the differences in income! it was shocking And was another valuable lesson of how lucky we are. ❤

Well I don’t know about a chosen one LOL.. but I know I have had a hand guiding me throughout my life, even though at times my own doubts have been strong, my faith in our human spirit has kept me going.. WE all of us inspire dear Debby, and we each find our own ways in which to do it.. 🙂 Never forget, you too are a great inspiration to many.. 🙂

You believe it or not,I was just about to leave your place and come back later again for your garden, when I noticed your new post and its eye-catching title “Respect”.I was magnetised on the spot and I started reading and reading and digging into your past, this time. What an emotive story and a gorgeous choice for this magnificent challenge,Sue Dear!Your rewound time and brought out this touching story, which will remain for good in my heart.I was so sad though when I read about the disaster that took place in 2004 and that it had coincided with the date you retired. It was really shocking to find out that some fellow workers had lost their lives.Respect is part of yourself ~ you show it generously to everybody and everything! How nice it is to be respectful and respectable at the same time, and of course a highly respected narrator!Love & Respect to you,my lovely friend 🙂 ❤ xxx
PS:Hope your daughter had a safe journey to Sri Lanka ~

Just spotted you comment here dear Doda..
Yes when I think back, I wonder how I did what I did, a Mum juggling family and a career path..
I was made redundant from that firm in the year 2000 😉 The Millennium year.. Which if I had ‘Listened’ to my intuition and Spirit, I would have left the industry then.. Instead I spent another 4 yrs and let me see 4 more jobs in textiles and was made redundant again.. Then my health took a turn in nudging me.. So I changed career paths and retrained as a Support Worker and worked with Adults with Learning Difficulties and mental health until last year when I took early retirement 🙂 ..
Many thanks dear Doda for taking the time to read, it was pretty long and I edited it several times to shorten it.. 🙂 Lol.. xxx

Thanks for allowing me to go deeper into your past and your work experiences.
When did the firm re-employ you?And why it would had been better if you had left then?It seems, you regretted it for some reasons.Nevertheless, every cloud has a silver lining, which we realise in the distant future.Actually,I thoroughly read up your story, but by the time I had to write my comment,I had to go back and re-read some parts and then go down again through the long string of the comments.I did my best though 🙂 xxx

That’s my reply dear friend ~ it’s still there, but not sent to you :
        Hi there dearest Sue,
I feel really guilty I asked you all those questions and you had,in a way,to give me some answers. You’ve extensively and in every detail described all the stages you went through until you retired.
What a pity you had some sort of misfortunes, but it’s all history now. What really upset me,is the exploitation of humans by humans. The well-known method that helps capitalism to expand and to dominate. Now,I understand why you speak so much about human rights and social injustice in your posts.

Thank you for taking the time to send me this analytical e-mail and once again I realised that you apply and practice all what you support in your posts. Now,you lead a peaceful life along with your family and it’s high time to enjoy whatever you missed when you were a working woman.
        Take care my good friend.
Sending you much love, appreciation and respect,

        Doda

What a fascinating journey Sue. Do you think we end where we need to be? I sometimes think we do, where we might do the most good even when we don’t realize this is the truth.

Oh I am certain dear Val.. we each of us have a kind of ‘Blueprint’ we intend to follow.. Circumstances not always of our own choice can be thrown into the journey .. For nothing is cast in stone, so each person along the way affects our journey.. I liken our journey to that of a tree..
We all of us have roots, which we bring with us our upbringing/ preconditioned thoughts, that have shaped the way we perceive things about us often by our parents teachings..
But we can each climb any branch to get to the top.. For that is our aim to climb higher within our understanding/ through our experiences..

Now those of us who have a strong hold and sure foot using our inner/good to guide us, will pull ourselves up, and yes at times we may slip and lose our grip, but we know deep down we have to keep climbing reaching out with love and empathy.. So we keep on keeping on..

There are many others upon this same tree, 🙂 each jostling, pushing, arguing how to get to the top, pushing each other down, cutting off limbs!.. While there are still others reaching down helping others climb..

We are all of us upon this Tree of Life dear Val.. all upon the same journey, yet each standing on their own branch of awareness .. Its a dense Forest out there, and many as yet can not see the Wood for the trees… so intent are they within their own climb, as ‘Greed’ rules their world..

One day dear Val, we may wake up and find all the Trees cut down, and there is no where left to climb.. Let us hope we wake up to ourselves before then dear Val, and learn to fly!! 🙂

Love to you my friend.. We are One! xx

Wonderful story. We learn a lot through our lives and hopefully we get a little bit wiser for every day. Not everyone does, unfortunately, but I can see you lived a lot a learned a lot, and that is what I think is our purpose here. To improve, develop and also to care about others. To show compassion and to be helpful. Great reminder, thank you:)

Thanks for sharing that great insightful story Sue, one of the main themes I saw recurring, was the display of Humility and respect, no matter how high or how low someone is in this life, if they can hold onto both those traits, then they are people who have respect for all mankind.

I agree with you Ian, throughout time you can pick out those within history who have had this trait.. Respect costs nothing.. and yet if applied can reap great benefits not only for the giver, but the receiver too..

May we all apply more respect with all whom we meet and also remember to pay great respect to our Earth Mother. She sustains us and gives us life.. ❤ xx

Sue, I knew you had worked in a sewing factory but didn’t realize you had to leave your dreams of art school to go to work to help support your family. Many would have resented the lack of choice and not been respectful of both the job or the other workers like you were. I’m glad you were able to retire and now enjoy having time to work on your art.

Well they were only Dreams Lois. I knew deep down it would never be.. I so disliked it for the first few years though. Yes I need to create more time to get to grips with my painting, I am missing it with all the allotment work etc.. So hope to put some time aside to get out my canvas and paints and see what I can create.. 🙂 I have been dabbling with my Pastels, but I do like painting xx

Each of us, carries within us the capacity to change the world in small ways for better or worse. Everything we do and think affects the people in our lives, and their reactions in turn affect others As the effect of a seemingly insignificant word passes from person to person, its impact grows and can become a source of great joy, inspiration, anxiety, or pain. Your thoughts and actions are like stones dropped into still waters, causing ripples to spread and expand as they move outward.. I hope that I can send a few ripples out via the web of life, as we each of us weave the threads together... Welcome to my Sanctuary of Peace and Love... May we each spread our Lights around our World....Sue Dreamwalker
