Healthy Eating~Growing your own

You don’t need me to tell you we are in a critical time of our Earths History and thankfully many are unknowingly starting to reconnect back to Nature as they get back to their roots..

We are responsible for creating our Future not only for ourselves but for our future generations. And people are slowly awakening and becoming aware of our global responsibilities, by being aware of our environmental issues  and the pollutions we have unwittingly contributed to over the years.

We are also starting to see how important it is to eat healthily and are taking an interest again in Growing our own vegetables. Here near where I live allotments are full with waiting lists for vacant plots.  And its good also to see a local infants school with their own plot teaching children the principles of growing their own crops..You should see them, they just love being outdoors digging and planting..

Rising food prices and concerns over what we are eating are making more and more of us aware the importance of what we are eating.. What we put into our bodies does have an affect upon our well being. An article  my Hubby read out to me recently Here  stated that over 8 million Britons take Statins the anti Cholesterol drug with over 55million Statin prescriptions dispensed last year.  And yet many may not need this drug if they followed a more healthy eating plan.. Many are suffering from side effects such as muscular pains  from taking Statins, and yet in other parts of the world where they eat a Mediterranean based diet of olive oil, nuts, oily fish, plenty of fruit and vegetables and a moderate amount of red wine! Cholesterol levels are nowhere near as high .

Many in the modern world live on ‘Fast convenience foods’ which can contain high amounts of fat which the body is failing to break down. And hands up over the years I too have bought a convenience meal now and again, but we on the whole have been a family who sit down to an evening dinner of a home cooked meal with fresh veggies .

As the season progresses  you may find that the Gardening Spirit takes  me over and when the warm weather finally re-appears the place I will be will be found is outdoors in the earth..

So how is the Allotment coming along?View from half way

Everything is coming along nicely.. Here are a few pictures Hold your curser over the picture to see what is growing there.

Peas

Raspberry Canes, Rhubarb, and Runner Beans Poles in

Above is the Runner Beans poles to the left, this year we planted a couple of rows of carrots where you see the lines running underneath. The Rhubarb in the box, Raspberry canes which we transplanted and thinned out this year.. The Bush in the foreground is a Gooseberry Bush. the seedlings around the bottom are Marigolds. The Cloches  hold Curly Kale and we have since put in our Cabbages under another couple of cloches. The reason we spent on cloches this year is that last year nearly all our young brassica’s were eaten by the wood pigeons who laid in wait and stripped them row by row.  I have plans to make a Scare-crow too so watch out for that one!

Curly Kale

Above is the Curly Kale, all we need now is the warmth to bring things along…

Happy Gardening All of you!..

So what are YOU planting this year? Are you getting the Growing Bug?

Very impressive DW…How much space is that plot? It’s funny, I was thinking today about your comments on OWR and I began to wonder why some people are hungry to learn all they can about themselves, their health etc. and a great many others could seem to care less??? What is that all about? I always have my nose in a book or online learning the latest ways to better my health and live my life. I can’t imagine not doing that. I feel so much more secure knowing how to take care of my own life….I wish all people could find the same excitement for their own sakes, but as we know all too well, there has to be balance…..Anyway, great garden. So well laid out and thought out. I hope the weather agrees with you and the thieves stay away…..Blessings and love….VK xxoo

Yes we should each of us take our Health Issues seriously and we can do a very good job on many conditions by healing ourselves via our positive affirmations and living a healthier life style.. We so easily now-a-days turn to Pills to solve things, when there can be if we really want to heal ourselves with alternative medicines and therapies. I know that my own condition of FMS when treated with the medical profession didnt improve in fact it only made me worse as the inflammatory tablets let to a stomach ulcer, which then required more tablets.. So for me, I sought out alternative healing.. As a Hands on healer myself, I knew all about energy work. and so set about healing myself with stopping taking the tablets and learning how to manage my condition. I did 15 mins of Qi-Gong every morning and positive affirmations, with meditations, and Acupuncture every 3 weeks… I have had acupuncture now for over 3 yrs .. Its a wonder I hold water! LOL the amount of needles I have had. But it works for me.. And so long as I dont over work certain muscles and pace myself I class myself as normal.. As I can now walk long distances, Where as once upon a time I would find it difficult even to have the energy to walk up stairs as the pain levels were so bad… 🙂

As to the Garden plot size.. When I fist roughly measured it when I first started blogging it was around 145 ft long, however more of the waste-land we hadn’t dug my Hubby has dug this year so the area where we plant is now around 165ft, this isnt however including the sheds and small Piece behind.. and its around 45 foot wide.. 🙂 I have included a Gallery Page under Grow your own 2013.. This is where I intend to add more pictures as the crops progress! .. And thank you again VK for your good wishes … DW xx

I’m just preparing my garden plot … will put it in next week … always wait till Victoria Day … can’t wait … so enjoy looking at your garden pics, Sue … we only have a 100 frost free days / year (if we are lucky) … everything is growing like crazy right now … I already have chives and rhubarb, plus perennial flowers, like day lily, monkshood, lupines, poppies and some other wild flowers … for trees there are “only” poplars and spruce …so love every bit of green right now … Love, always, cat.

Sounds like you have lots of lovely flowers and some of my favourites such as Rhubarb…. I can imagine the shorter window of growing time can prove to be more of a problem.. I just hope we get some warmth this Summer as it rained almost continually last year witch had a big affect upon the growth of the crops as many rotted in the soil.. or were devastated by the infestation of slugs due to the wet weather. .. Love back and a Hug!

Your allotment is looking good, what a lot of work you have put into it. It is too cold here to much in safely. About statins, while diet plays the biggest role in controlling cholesterol I have found out that for many of us our bodies have a set level and will work against the statins to keep the levels where they were. Many of my friends were put on statins and given larger and larger doses because their bodies were stronger then the meds. They went off them and while the numbers have stayed the same, they feel much better.

Our bodies will repair themselves if we stay out of their way by eating proper, reducing stress and getting adequate sleep I believe.

I totally agree with your Lois on the Statins, and our bodies WILL heal themselves of many problems should we listen to them and treat our bodies with due respect!..
The allotments are all Hubbies hard digging and weeding, I just come along and plant, weed and harvest.. now thats my favourite bit! 🙂

I cannot get fresh veggies because the only stall providing them in the Arndale where I shop sells fruit and veg that are supposed to be fresh, then he bags them only for you to come home and find half are rotten! 😦

Dear Prenin, You know even when you go to the SuperMarkets the same could be said of them, They store them in cold storage and when the come out into the shop they sweat and soon go off.. Many things that you buy now a days from the Big stores do not even last the week out… as they have taken so long to be transported usually from abroad in containers…. no wonder the shelf life is so short!…… Wishing you a good week! 🙂

Farmers Markets are now ever more popular…. Its a shame that the corner green grocers shops have all but gone as the Big Super stores took over.. lots of the local shops used to do business with their local farmers way back when!… Now Farmers are being driven out of business with the low prices offered for milk and produce by the Big Boys… Its a matter of accept this offer or we will go else where… And Farmers markets are the only means for many small holder to help keep afloat… So I am pleased you support them Val

Gardening is work! But earning income for money to buy food is work too! Present day diets are lacking in basic nutrition especially in areas that do not allow for a regular healthy blend of food. It is up to the us to provide as much fresh food as possible.
Olive oil is great for a healthy heart! Eating locally grown food is best all around. (the less transported a food item the better!)
Seeing how your garden looks makes me happy. All the delays from bad weather slowed you down a little. It looks great Dreamwalker!! you and your husband have done an amazing job!!

Strange how ones tastes change, before I travelled abroad I Thought I didn’t like them and now I go out of my way to pick them if they are on a menu.. and loved them in Salads.. Which has reminded me to sew a new batch of Lettuce seeds! 🙂 As I like to stagger them… Many thanks and Blessings ~Dreamwalker

Lovely, simply lovely Sue, I’ve just been to the local market and bought a hanging basket, (I know that’s not the subject but it’s the greenness I love, just to step outside the front door and see it there, makes me smile….) I can almost smell the freshness of the outdoors just staring at your photo’s, and you are so, so right, eating healthily should be our main priority, we are what we eat, and why so many fill their bodies with additives just amazes me… There is so much information online nowadays, warning people of the adverse effects, .. and yet, some seem to think they can eat badly and take supplements as if it’s a cure-all … Fresh and healthy just seem so obvious, going together like… erm… strawberries and cream.? .. alright mayhap a tiny bit of cream is allowable…(low fat? 🙂 ) I bet you feel the benefit of working on the land, plus what you derive from the veggies themselves.. . Winning all ways… I shall keep an eye out for that Scarecrow, methinks I could dress one myself from my outdoor clothes after I’ve been weeding/pruning and digging int’ garden…. Love and light, land-girl… 🙂 xPenx

Hi Sue. Thanks for reading my poetry and for your inspirational comments. Your allotment looks amazing and will surely feed many! We don’t have a garden at the moment, however we shop in farm shops, farmer’s markets and local shops. My dad, who is 81 cycles to his allotment each day to work on it and to collect fresh vegetables. His purple sprouting broccoli is very tasty, however his potatoes have suffered as the weather has been so damp and cold. I am interested in the affects of statins too.

Strange how the art of growing things has become lost. Years ago that’s what we knew, that’s what we did…….till corporate ideals took a hold and the whole thing became commercialised, nature as nature then wasn’t enough we had to “improve” on it……humanity after all always knows better……..lol

Cant beat fresh home cooked food sat round a table just talking…..another art that is becoming lost in the world of TV, e-mail, tablets and phones!

Hmmm the more we have the more we want, the more we get and the less happy we become.

I have a garden…..well it came with the new place even been thinking of doing something with it, if this weather improves!
Though I did do some tidying last week, but got confused between what was a plant and what I needed to pull out! Though I did decide anything with sharp pointy thorns could stay after cutting my arm up a few times lol

Now there is a focus for you Duma! your garden.. and turning a corner of it into a small veggie plot.. Its not too late.. and if you dont want to start from seed. you can always go to the garden centre and buy a few veggie plants or flower plants, however you feel inspired…. Those sharp and nasty things do have a tendency in winning their battles!!!… Thats why we always need to tackle them by digging down deep and extracting the roots!.. Smiles here as I think this may have a duel meaning… And ask yourself why were you getting stabbed and scratched a few times??? Nature has a habit of hitting home on how we beat ourselves up over things!!!……. just a thought!… I hope the weather warms soon and you can channel your energy into your garden Duma,,… You will surprise yourself at how uplifting gardening can be. 🙂 ~Peace to you my friend.

Lovely to see your photos Sue and I for one will fully enjoy your ‘Gardening Spirit’ and seeing the beautiful development of your plants. Is there anything more wonderful than growing your own things? As I mentioned somewhere else, we are trying a mini orchard this year. My small apple tree is blossoming and I have high hopes for a few apples. Three of the Minarettes are small and will not fruit till next year – we must be patient. Isn’t this another thing about nature that it teaches us and is a lesson that many need to learn – patience. Sometimes things take time and we can wait and watch and bask in the waiting. An antidote to the ‘have it all now’ culture. Take care my sweet friend, Ruth xx

Yes Ruth, Patience is the key! and nature has an abundance of Patience.. I wish you well with your fruit trees.. We moved and thinned out our Raspberry canes and with the weather being cool they are only just sprouting greenery .. So we may not get any fruit off of those or our strawberries as many are in flower now, With me transplanting new shoots to the new raised bed, it may well be next year for these too… But such is the nature of gardening spirit… Patience and all things come to them that wait! 🙂 Many thanks for your visit lovely you caught up xxxx Sue

Each of us, carries within us the capacity to change the world in small ways for better or worse. Everything we do and think affects the people in our lives, and their reactions in turn affect others As the effect of a seemingly insignificant word passes from person to person, its impact grows and can become a source of great joy, inspiration, anxiety, or pain. Your thoughts and actions are like stones dropped into still waters, causing ripples to spread and expand as they move outward.. I hope that I can send a few ripples out via the web of life, as we each of us weave the threads together... Welcome to my Sanctuary of Peace and Love... May we each spread our Lights around our World....Sue Dreamwalker
