A Child’s Imagination is Precious~ Our Granddaughters Poem.

Most of us who are parents or grandparents think our children are just the best..  Because they are in our eyes. Not all children are so lucky.

I want to share with you  a poem written by our now Eight year old granddaughter who wrote this poem in two sessions as we took her to school and back again. She composed this on the journey to and from school in the back of our car as we travelled.

I thought it so good when she read it out to us when we got back home, I said it would be a great poem to take to school on her show and tell day when they take things to school and speak about them.

As it was scribbled hurriedly in its  composition on the note paper you see below, I asked her if she wanted to re-write it on some better paper and in her neater handwriting.. This she did, and she took that copy to school.

Our Granddaughters Poem first draft she scribbled down above. Then aged 7

Her teacher enjoyed it so much as did the head master, that they asked her to read it in their Assembly on their last day of half term, before Halloween.

So she read it out to the whole school and said ‘Grandma, I used the microphone, but I rushed saying it, as I wanted to get it over with quickly’.

So here is our Granddaughters Poem.. She entitled it

MY FRIEND.

Who’s that I hear you say?

 It’s my imaginary friend

It’s Benge.

He comes when no one is around

When he comes he doesn’t make a sound

When he comes he talks to me

To keep me company.

I like company so does he, when I enter his reality.

We enter worlds of make believe

Of Dragons dens made out of leaves.

We play up high and flap our wings

We soar and roar and all those things.

We swoop on down and land on the ground

Up we rise, up up tall,

We’re standing on the castle wall.

Giants come we grab our weapons

To defend the castle.

Our Castle comes with a bridge door

But in our castle there is something more

What could it be?

Let’s explore

But first look inside the bridge door

We find ourselves on the bedroom floor

And my invisible friend has vanished once more.

By our Granddaughter Aged 7 at writing.

~~~~
Imagination is something we should all encourage, it is something to be nurtured.
After all Children grow into Adults..
And I am still Imagining a Brighter Peaceful New World..
Together Lets DREAM  And Create the WORLD we want our Children’s Children to Grow in Love within.
Have a Blessed Week.
    🦋 Seeing the talent of writing coming through the grandchildren gives us hope. Hope that the gift will carry on after us. It also gives a sense of pride. I remember the thrill I felt when my granddaughter wrote her very first story earlier this year. I also shared it on my blog.
    This is a wonderful poem. Be proud. You’re allowed to be.
    Love your granddaughter’s poem! Exquisite in every way. Very bright child. I am so glad she has a wonderful imagination. It so often gets driven out of our kids in school 😦 But her’s is alive and well thankfully! Please convey to her for me that she did a beautiful job!       Please don’t worry VK… I am going to email you, its annoying this glitch between our websites.. But I have a problem on other sites, where I leave a comment, they see it and reply, but I never get the notification of their replies unless I go back to their web pages.
    Her poem is so beautiful – she gets her talent from a sweet, wonderful person I know named Sue…
    I love how she goes places with Benge to a world of make-believe. The school where I work encourages this. Students don’t generally have access to technology until the middle grades (6th through 8th grade, about ages 11-13) and they have the kids go outside in all kinds of weather. They built what’s called the Gnome Village to encourage innovation and imagination.
    I say that because it’s pretty amazing how your granddaughter does this and does it well! I wish we encouraged people to do this instead of grooming and funneling them into a “legitimate” career path.
    It pays off, in the end, to strive to take the road less traveled. 🙂
    Sending you hugs and wishes for a wonderful week, sweet friend! xo
      Thank you Cynthia, the school are big on exercise and sport, but they also allow her age group access to computers..And she knows her way around ‘Paint’ better than I do 🙂 I also encourage her artistic skills..
      Last year she took part in a poetry competition with the school.. Various schools have the same poem to memorise and then all those taking part come together to speak the poem in front of judges..
      They are awarded marks on their presentation, confidence and how they speak and deliver the poem.. She came third in her age group.
      She is under the weather today, with a cough, cold virus, so prayers would be appreciated Cynthia.. Sending Hugs and love dear friend ❤
          Thank you Cynthia, she had to go to Hospital as her temp exceeded 40. But after three days she recovered well enough for School, Yet she did not develop a cold, and the hospital was uncertain what had caused her temperature.
          She had written a lovely poem she brought on Saturday and a story.. Many thanks for answering this dear friend.. and for caring.. ❤ 🙂
            Yikes! The hospital!? And they didn’t know what it was? Eesh. I had that once…a high fever, but no cold, and other than feeling very tired, no sickness. I’d like to think that my body was using its chi energy (this is my new terminology for the body’s energy, hehe) to fend off negative energy (in the form of a virus or something else). I’m really glad she’s doing better. I’m so sorry for you all that she had to go through that. Hospitals are not fun places to be. Glad she’s on the mend and back at school. Sending you ALL big, healing hugs and light. xoxo
              Thanks Cynthia.. I was a worry, as they gave her meds to reduce temp, but they were not effective.. So she had to have meds every three hours as her temp kept rising when meds wore off..
              The hospital said it wasnt viral, but maybe bacterial which of course worried us.. But she seemed fine yesterday… Though still not got her appetite back. ❤
        As I really appreciated her poem. She has a natural affinity for words: they seem drawn to her and she to them. Perhaps your granddaughter will in time have her own Blog – overseen by your good self of course – so that she can share her imagination more widely and receive encouragement to help her on her way.
        Many thanks for allowing her to take first steps into the Blog-sphere. Next stop infinity! 🙂
    Thank you for this insight Sue, we tend to forget that children can teach us so much, after all they are using the spring board which we have prepared for them to use and to learn, but most of all to teach us, if we are prepared to listen. We should look to them to be adventurous in this time of Advent, following their imagination. Love, David
    There is nothing more elegant than a child’s imagination, unsullied by the impressions and comments of others that layer the child’s worldview. But with the best support and guidance as one’s grandparents and parents, and the whole community at school, childhoods’ treasured perspectives and frank awareness can be brought forward to educate us all. The children really do hold the light that guides….
We are all badly missing our childhood and many of us have even forgotten how the childhood world was all about and it is such sad state of affairs. We all feel sorry for the unfolding world around us where simplicity and joy in simple things have been hijacked by the complexity of life the way we are living…
    We have become mechanized and it is the rationality that is driving our actions and we are living a life of regimented routine, it is mundane and we are trapped. She through her simple words and profound thoughts captured in her beautiful poem literally has taken us in that fascinating childhood world. And it is so much in the imagination and we get swayed by the power of knowledge and have never given the due that imagination deserve and how it can transform our real world. It is the power of imagination that has given the knowledge the real fight in this virtual world. Nothing can be more powerful than the child’s imagination, and they can create wonders and they make us wonder with such creative work. We have stopped observing and recognizing those moments of joy.
    It is just that our mind has over the years has become jagged and corrupted, and we try to superimpose our puerile thoughts into their pure world. Therein we commit the biggest blunder and we take the magic out of a child’s world when we thrust logic into their thoughts…and precisely that what we have been doing recklessly and incessantly. I am sure she must have been secretly learning all the great qualities of writing from you and connecting with her wider school community. As she starts knowing what great work you are doing and how you have inspired a whole world around you…she will pick these threads from you and weave a magical fabric of inspiring thoughts. Her talent needs to be nurtured and who else can be a better person than you. It is a joy reading such unbridled thoughts of her and the joy of innocence emerging from every words that she has so beautiful placed in her world of poetic thought. It is highly motivating to have shared her hand scribbled poem here and the beauty is in the purity.
    Always dear Sue when I come here I am so happy and every time I return I do with so much of joy and basket of wisdom. Hope you are doing fine and sorry for such gaps, been caught up at various front, no excuse I agree.
    Have a lovely lovely Sunday…
    Take Care!!!
      Dear Nihar,
      Such a delight to see you, and to have your in-depth thoughts as always my friend.
      And I so thank you for the compliments of our granddaughters poem.
      I totally agree with your perspective on how we take the magic out of young children’s world. Often by not listening to them. They love nothing better than create and use their imagination to create stories and visualise things within their minds.
      I play often with our granddaughter who makes up stories that we play out.
      So these words of yours so resonated with me.. As often times young children are sat before the TV and no one interacts with them anymore in their own worlds of make-believe.
      “Therein we commit the biggest blunder and we take the magic out of a child’s world when we thrust logic into their thoughts…and precisely that what we have been doing recklessly and incessantly. ”
      I hope that my own little periods of interaction with her story telling, artwork and creative time does indeed weave the fabric of her future thinking into being.. I can only say, how delighted I am with her progress, she brought me yet another poem she had written only yesterday and a short story. And I marvel at her usage of words for one so young.
      Many thanks dear Nihar.. I hope to get around to my visiting again soon.. I too have been taking longer breaks between posts and not doing my usual rounds, as I have been spending less time connecting to the WiFi.. Reasons for which I will post in my next post.
      Always a joy Nihar, to have your thoughts and encouragement my friend.. I hope you have a lovely Sunday also.. 😀
      Take good care.. Sue 🙂
        Indeed so true dear Sue. There is a child within us and that keep playing with us even when we grow up. It has nothing to do with our getting matured and living life as an adult. The child within is so much about the imagination, so much about the art of questioning everything around us, the joy of enjoying with the little things that comes our way, it is about not be judgmental and assuming about things that isn’t.
        Not only it is about us preserving our child like quality as we grow up but being with children makes our life much more meaningful and lively. And to be with them we need to nurture our patience and share our compassion, they love to be listened and they love to talk and we need to keep hearing. Lending our ear. They make us feel joyfully engaged. They make us question our age old assumptions and they lift us from the sink of sorrow and pit of frustration.
        She is so lucky to have you besides her, they are quick at learning and they pick up so many good qualities from us, and you have a repository of them. This interaction between you and her will make her the person she will be and she is already a talent and under your tutelage she will inspire the next generation. By the way I also love to spend quality time with kids as I learn lot from them and also sharing with them make me feel complete.
        I always so cherish the wonderful conversations that we have and there is that delight inherently comes with the exchange of such lovely thoughts. Thank you so much dear Sue and God bless our good thoughts so as to inspire many more…
        Take care!!!
    Cool! Reminds me how I was writing poems and doing a drawing a day to go with them. Imagination and creativity is a big deal, and these kids who exercise them have much better results at school.
    I’m impressed a 7 year old knows what poetry is. I certainly didn’t and still don’t. Exposure is essential. She’s obviously learned a great deal from being around a creative grandmother and maybe others in the family. It’s nice that she is already being recognized for it in school. Imagination is vital to life.
Each of us, carries within us the capacity to change the world in small ways for better or worse. Everything we do and think affects the people in our lives, and their reactions in turn affect others As the effect of a seemingly insignificant word passes from person to person, its impact grows and can become a source of great joy, inspiration, anxiety, or pain. Your thoughts and actions are like stones dropped into still waters, causing ripples to spread and expand as they move outward.. I hope that I can send a few ripples out via the web of life, as we each of us weave the threads together... Welcome to my Sanctuary of Peace and Love... May we each spread our Lights around our World....Sue Dreamwalker
