The Woman watched the ant struggling as her fork disturbed the soil where she had been clearing weeds.
The unseen world that lived beneath the earth which was oblivious to the human world suddenly awoke, as it was exposed to the Light.
Soon more ants sensing their world was under threat came rushing to the surface ready to defend it. Each ant courageously taking up their positions as they tasted the air. Each one ready to do battle with what must have felt like an earthquake as their whole world was turned upside down.
They swarmed to the surface, a mass of black, running around in what appeared to be confusion. Yet the woman knew they were far from confused and were rapidly assessing the damage and working out how to defend and repair their world.
The woman squatted down, leaning on her fork as she sat back on her heels, she looked more closely at the mass of ants. She took off her gardening glove to wipe her hand across her brow as the heat of the Sun rose in the morning sky.
As she did, she noticed that an ant must have run up the fork handle and was already on her wrist. She made an involuntary movement with her other hand as she went to brush the ant off her hand, and in a split second the ant was no more. She said a silent sorry to the insect kingdom as she had unintentionally killed the lone soldier ant with her automatic reflex.
She sighed as she stood up, levering her weight onto the fork to help her stand. She stretched and arched her aching back and was aware of her shadow across the freshly dug earth.
She walked back to the garden shed, dragging out a wooden chair she placed it in the shade as she opened up her bottle of water, she drank thirstily thinking of the ant. How courageous he was running to defend ready to sacrifice for the good of the whole. And now his bravery was no more. Gone with the brush of a hand.
The Blackbird who had been keeping her company for days as she had dug the earth landed by the ants. Seeing his opportunity, he gathered more food for his chicks. She had thrown him the odd worm over the days and the woman had seen his expert eye pick out the wire worms that she could hardly see. He would fly off with beak full to return near the woman’s feet to see what else the woman had dug up and so the two worked in silent unity, respecting each other’s territory. The woman marvelled at the unspoken trust the blackbird showed her as he hopped so near her folk and hoe.
Sitting watching the Blackbird gather in this new prize, the woman thought how her actions of turning the earth had set in motion a series of events. She had a pang of regret. Then stopped herself, was not the black birds chicks now benefiting?
Life and Death went side by side.
Worlds within Worlds kept going around her head.
Were we not like ants? Building our communities and cities. Making our homes, rearing our young, each doing what it takes to survive. Were we not rushing about looking confused? In our chaotic world, as we rushed to work, and drove our cars along the routes we made.
We were all going about our daily lives, thinking ourselves safe, until something bigger than ourselves over which we have no control comes along to cause havoc and upheaval. She thought of the recent volcanic eruptions and thought how small we were compared to natures might.
She stood to begin weeding on another patch, giving the ants time to settle.
All of us are part of Natures Natural World we are no different than Ants. And in the scheme of the Universe we were minuscule tiny atoms of carbon, floating about like molecules in the space-stream of the Cosmos. A Sobering thought, as the woman knelt down, pulling up a stubborn weed. She shook the soil from its roots. Taking off her glove, she ran her hand within the soil, thinking we all return to dust, and pondered upon the miracle of life.
We were all made up of the same Elements of carbon and various minerals that were found in the Earth and Stars!. She looked skyward, shielding her eyes from the Sun, and smiled, yes..
we are All One.
The woman wondered if the human population would be as resilient if their world were turned upside down like the ants..
She tried to put that thought from her mind as she stretched her legs as she turned her attention to the job in hand.
Worlds within Worlds, she thought.
Sowing and Reaping,
Harvesting what we Sow
Yes, Worlds within Worlds
Wheels within Wheels Forever Turning!
The Woman started on her next patch, the Blackbird sang his Song, the woman smiled some more.
All is well in my world as she said her favourite mantra silently to herself,
we were all of us heading in the same direction….
Home!..

Sue, from such a simple act as digging your thoughts take us from the soil, the ant to our very existence. I will never think of ants in the same way after reading your post and one patch of my garden is particularly affected – I will see each as the brave lone soldiers, the protectors! It is amazing how the blackbird knows you are no threat, rather a source of even more food, safe to be around…we have such a blackbird in our garden and if the saw does not scare him. Here to us all, being interconnected … searching & finding our home, wherever that may be! hugs, my friend. xx

Annika many thanks dear friend,, Nature is constantly teaching us, if we just take time to look within their world..
We Humans think we are far superior, Yet Ants when you begin to research how their colony works, you will see they are all about the Whole, not the individual.. And quiet willingly sacrifice themselves.. And when we learn about the anatomy of our body make up, we then begin to understand we are all made of the same stuff.. 🙂 lol..
Thank you very much for reading, I am pleased you enjoyed it. 🙂

Dear Sue, I marvel at your thoughts, your sensitivity towards ants and the way you have linked a small discovery to human beings and their efforts to protect themselves. There is no doubt that we are mere ants in the face of Mother Nature who can cause havoc in any part of the world and she has been demonstrating in various ways why we need to be kind to her and each creature around us. Love and kindness is the only way to sustain here, in harmony with each other.
Recently some ants have been visiting us, to the amusement of my grandchildren who watch them with interest, with a volley of questions and why they hover around their dining table, giving them a profound lessons about not spilling the food crumbs.
Have a blessed time in your garden dear friend. 🙂

The loving work involved with gardening is not even closely matched by the returns received from it even before harvest. Dirty hands are a ‘special’ feeling that
only gardeners know about and can’t really share adequately in words.

Namaste Sue, how are you? 🙂
Well now, I certainly disappeared down the ant-hole reading this and became so small I think I may have disappeared 🙂
Wonderfully written on your loom, joyously ponderous, mindful and aware, it is another woven blog-post blooming in the raised beds of your virtual garden. Your weave finds associations between disparate but tangible events – for example, the shadow cast ahead of you at loss of the ant illustrates sensitivity to death as a reality of living. I was reminded of our mortality, but yet, also reassured, comforted, even nurtured, prompted towards thinking more deeply than just superficially. Worlds within world’s, layers within layers, where all is in order, all correctly niched, interwoven, interdependent, all thriving within individual eco-systems feeding into the web of life on planet Earth. Thinking upwards and downwards on an infinite scale is dizzying!
The Blackbird who befriends you, is it one of a nesting pair in trees on the allotment? I think it a joy she/he spends time with you and shares mutual trust. No doubt your conversations were/are both deep and wondrous 🙂
As I arrived at the end of your post, my mind remembered the phrase: ‘There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot…’ and then I recalled Louis Armstrong’s words, ‘what a wonderful world’ 🙂
Hoping all is well Sue. With the nice weather continuous at this time, I trust you are enjoying some of it within your garden space as well. Have a pleasant evening.
Namaste 🙂

I am sure Merlin will be familiar with worlds within worlds Dewin.. 🙂
And thank you for your generous feedback Dewin..
Loved the quote too.. And who can fail not to love Louis Armstrong’s version of Wonderful World..
We have several blackbirds.. One that visits the allotment and two in our home garden.. The way the blackbird in the allotments came back and forth his nest was not far and was in the hedgrow I feel near the back of the sheds.. He sits high up in a large Elderflower Tree Singing his joy to the world..
I was awake at 4 am this morning and just after 4 I heard the Blackbird break into song.. And I always think of the Song.. ‘Morning has Broken, Blackbird has spoken’ And then the rest of the chorus join in.. But Blackbird starts them off..
And yes we are mortal Beings of Earth, But Eternal Spiritual Beings.. Exploring the cosmos..
I hope you too are well Dewin and Merlin and the gang are enjoying their travels.. I have not seen a new post in the reader but that is not to say I haven’t missed one. I miss plenty.. And I will be around to see if Swan is flying very soon..
Good night Dewin and enjoy the magic of tomorrow.. and tomorrow.. 🙂

The magic is eternal, and always enchanting, the universe there to be enjoyed.
You know Merlin too well already 🙂 He knows far more than I ever will.
I always remember Louis Armstrong singing on Disney: a piece of film where he wanders amongst flora and fauna, animal and mammal alike singing with his gravel-voice. It’s a song that always plays in one’s head.
You are an early riser Sue: I recall you giving up the wrist-watch and so imagine you are on Sue time, natural time. Hence delightful to wake at 4am to birdsong at day break. They obviously feel comfortable in your garden as much your allotment: always full of treats and good company.
Merlin and the gang are fine…they are at rest waiting on the current poem to come to a conclusion. I shall pick up with them in due course. Not sure where you read up to in the current poem, but I posted last night, chapter 206 🙂 It’s there waiting should you wish. I’ll look forward as always to you stopping-by.
Good night. Sweet dreams for when you get to Zzzzzz. Enjoy the remainder of your week.

Eight hours sounds the perfect reward for a hardworking gardener 🙂 It must be wonderful to not be compliant to the clock: just the body-clock. I imagine you wonder now just how you ever managed to fit in a job as well!
I’m most curious to see and hear more about this motion-sensitive camera: will you supporting any video footage with a blog-post. I’d like to read more about how it works and what motivated the purchase, not to mention seeing the footage! I’ll look forward to that 🙂 As it was the video you captured, what a delight.
‘But blackbirds and hedgehogs rule!’ 😀 I think commented on the blog you posted with the hedgehogs how wonderful it was to watch them. Forever endearing, the hedgehog is a much loved creature in the garden. I have seen one or two in next door’s garden quite by chance when their motion detecting security light flickers-on on a windy night and low and behold life in the unveiled darkness. I think the cat sat on the roof of their shed was equally as surprised as I for he/she jumped and almost slipped off the edge 🙂
I’ll leave you to enjoy a pleasant evening – still sunny outside even at 8pm. I love the summer and its so nearly here. Enjoy the end of the week.

I need to work out how to make a film.. then most probably how to load up to Youtube etc.. As my WP platform being free will not allow straight uploads of video unless its upgraded which I do not intend to do..
The motion camera, is like one of those on the nature programs where it is activated if something moves near it.. My thoughtful daughter bought it for Her Dad and me as a Christmas present.. She has one and has a wonderful family of foxes in her garden. We knew we had a hedgehog, saw its droppings but never captured it until the camera.. And to find we have not one but two.. 🙂 who now use the hedgehog box my daughter also got me, is something we look forward to in the mornings to see what the camera has caught ..
Our garden also a night run of about 6 different Cats in our neighbourhood too. We used to have Cats own us.. One for 21 yrs.. But at the moment we have no pets.. But that may change in the future.. All our animals have more or less found us.. :-D..
Thank you Dewin for sharing your Hedgehog and Cat surprise too… All manner of things happen while we sleep.. 🙂

Morning Sue, Namaste 🙂
Good luck in finding a working method to present your video…I hope it is possible and relatively easy to do as I imagine i’ll not be the only reader interested to watch the footage.
You sound especially taken with the camera and are obviously delighted with the result. I can imagine the fascination in trawling through hours of video eager with anticipation for the one shot, or shots , of things going on after dark. The hedgehogs are a delight and I hope will bring you hours of pleasure watching their nocturnal life. No doubt most of us would be pleasantly surprised to know what goes on after dark in our own back-yards: perhaps you’ll inspire others to invest in a camera.
My family has always had cats as pets: three whilst I lived at home, and still two cats share my parents life: at one time a mother and daughter until the mother passed away leaving her princess as queen of the castle. I hope you will acquire a new addition to your family – cats make wonderful pets and are always enchanting company.
I’ll leave you to enjoy the remainder of your day. I’m waiting on the sun coming out before heading off for a wander. Have a great week, good luck with the You Tube upload.
Take care. Namaste 🙂

So I will look into something I can download as I do not wish to buy something that I will only use rarely.. I am sure there is something out there.. Ah….DW ! Lessons from the animal kingdom! I was watching an ant just this morning scurrying along on his way to somewhere. Maymay (my sweet kitty) caught sight of it as well and ran over to watch it. She smelled it a few times and I just prayed she wouldn’t snort it up, then she lay down and just watched as the ant busied itself. It got me wondering what was going through her kitty brain as she watched. From what perspective in life was she seeing him from? Entertainment? Food? Curiosity? Challenge for dominance?
According to ant medicine it seems we may both be receiving the message to become industrious in preparing for what comes next. It is hugely obvious that humanity is at the crossroads and is about to face having to make a decision as to which direction it will go in next. We have no choice, humanity cannot stay stuck where we find ourselves now, it is a dead end street and offers nothing but eventual self destruction. Humanity is screaming within to break loose and become the ‘MORE’ we all know we can be. For many of us we wonder ‘HOW” we do this. It is scary but it is also time.
So glad you and Mr. Blackbird had a good day digging in the dirt. I know the realm you enter there and it is peace. Stay happy and dirty and filled with peace. It’s an inside day here today, very chilly and cold rain…I keep looking for summer but it is being shy this year for us…Happy planting and hi to Hubby….Hugs…VK ❤

I spent a lovely hour this afternoon meditating and chanting.. Pure Bliss.. and the good earth is always beneath my nails for a time.. Till they get scrubbed lol..
And I will catch up with you now tomorrow VK.. I have been on my PC far too long this evening my eyes are fuzzy..

It is interesting that you were reading my latest post as I was reading yours. I stopped the reading half way down to answers some comments, including your own.
You see it Sue. Worlds within worlds, a wheel within a wheel, the possibility, if not the probability that our world will be turned upside down one day… How the blackbird (fowls of the air/spirits) takes advantage of the situation when that happens. It’s all foretold (Revelation 18:1-4).
But where are we in all of this? Firmly fixed, ready to fight, only to be wasted by an almost unconscious reaction? It all matters what our connection is to the ground, or if at some point it even matters. We’re well taken care of if we see the full picture and see it correctly, no matter whether or not we appear to the universe as ants. 😉

Worlds within worlds – so true! This profound perspective gives a sense of relief that humans can stop fighting whatever we keep fighting, within and without. It is in the grand scheme of things that we can find space to rest in to. Every little action of ours sets a small world of action into motion changing the reality for unknown beings, to the advantage or disadvantage of those simply and amazingly just Being. And yes We are One. I find such peace and joy reading your post.

It gets closer to the surface that inner world, as we dig deeper to see what has created it, clearing out the weeds that strangle and block that very light within. Many creations have come and gone, like black ants and worms sharing our little plot. But it is in tilling that very soil that our discoveries are made, creating and ripening what went before, so that they grow even more by that light we have discovered.
That is a very beautiful post Sue, a third person and very spiritual touch, one that now is what you have become. A new way of being after hatching from the shell of the past. Even the view has now changed, so many things can now be seen, where before we were blind because of that shell. But that has purpose too, to develop and strengthen so as to be ready for this new world ❤

That is so true Mark.. That shell in which we hid and felt protected often held us prisoners for it restricted our view. So many live within the tunnel of fear, which keeps their vision from expanding, to embrace ALL..
And yes breaking free of that cocoon can be as painful at times as being held within its comfort blanket..
But All is needed as we like that tiny seed pushes through the darkness to emerge into the light, in order to allow its growth.
The Ants served as another reminder that while we may see many whose lives are seemingly sacrificed via our perspective, No life is ever lost.. Not even the spark of an Ant.
And so we Live and Learn.. As we open up to yet more light as we emerge from the darkened rooms of our narrow worlds..
Many thanks Mark. I appreciate as always your contribution and your thoughts.
Love and Blessings my friend 💚

And evolve and expand in the field of Consciousness.. ❤ 🙂 May we continue our journey through expansion, as we traverse this realm of our present existence..

A beautiful essay on life, Sue. I have often regretted brushing an insect from my arm and causing its demise, or stepping on a tiny creature as I walked without attention. And these acts of unconsciousness hurled me into contemplation. Many of us pay so little attention to the connection we have with all things. Living in mindfulness seems to take great effort in our fast-paced western society. Yet it is our only salvation. Thankfully, many are waking up and beginning to realize that carelessness must be transformed into loving kindness. I hope your garden blossoms and brings you great joy. We all come from the stars, and to the stars we shall return. Love and hugs to you, my lovely friend ❤️

Thank you Tina.. Living in mindfulness transforms us, to see ALL are interconnected with each other.. No one greater or lesser.. All play their part in contributing to the Whole.
Were it not for the Bees, we would soon starve.. Were it not for the insect eaters we would be swarmed by them.. Nature has all things in balance..
It is only Human, who think they know better interfering,, Then we wonder why imbalance occurs .
Many thanks Tina.. Loved having you read. ❤ Much LOVE ❤

This was such a lovely piece to read, Sue. I particularly liked the anecdote of the ants and woman, and how she didn’t feel afraid or annoyed by the mass of ants coming up out of the ground and climbing up her leg. I really like what Mark said. There are so many creations beneath the surface and many creations have come and gone. I also think light works both ways: we dig, we look deeper and we discover something anew. We learn something and maybe come away a bit better from that, and the thing that we discover gets new light and is shared all round.
You are so right in that we are all one. We’re all beings made up of heart and energy, and essentially right down to the core we are so, so similar. Our minds are probably what creates these worlds within worlds, sometimes for better or for worse depending what we come up with and if it’s for our own ego or for something bigger and a part of the bigger picture. In the simplest moments like the woman sitting on the porch with the blackbirds, everything usually clicks. You, me, everything around us, we’re all meant to be together. Another wonderful write up as usual. Thoughtful and something for all of us to ponder about. Many hugs from across the many miles ❤

Thank you dearest Mabel fro your indepth thoughts and for reading deeply into the post.. A reflection that I intended for one to find the deeper meaning within..
And yes you are so right,, We often have to go within our darkened space the deep dark well and draw up all that we wish to expel to help clear it to hold the light of purity again.. No one is without their shadows, but each shadow serves to show us the that it only the brightest light that brings our shadows into view.. Both exist together side by side..
Many thanks Mabel.. I so appreciate you reading my post in-depth..

It can be hard to keep going in that dark dark space and well. But you are right We all have our shadows and shadows will follow us wherever we go. We can choose to see it as something that haunts us, or something that exists with us and something we can learn from, seeing how we are not just our shadows. Always look forward to your posts, Sue. Wow, oh Wow! Sue, what a deeply moving post from you. One that would have any thinking person reflecting on what it all means, and realising that in the end it means either everything or nothing, depending on the perspective one chooses.
For the life span of a flea is measured in months. Of ants in a few years. Of us humans in a few decades. Then look down the telescope of geological time. For the age of our planet is 4.5 billion years, just under the age of our Sun. Then comes our Milky Way at just a mere 13.5 billion years!
Everything or Nothing!

What a sensitive beautiful story. Ants are very social, very strong hardworking animals. We are all specs in the universe and have no control over some things happening to us. I think we are just as resilient. I have experienced that here but there is a difference between us and ants. Peoples greed takes over which destroys their environment.

So many thoughts went through my mind as I read what you wrote here. First, that it read like a fictional story, weaving in characters and tales of other worlds. So good! Then I thought about how I am the same with regard to the ants: I would rather go somewhere else and leave their home alone rather than disturb them further. We even have our own little battles with armies of ants trying to come into the house. We just lay down some borax and/or mix it with some water and spray and they go on their way, finding some other place to inhabit. 🙂
And you had a black bird friend! The sweet little symbiotic relationship you created was a sign. In exchange for worms, the blackbird gave you something to write about and to smile about, forging a sweet memory. It was a sign that you have an open heart, and that you are willing to listen to the words Mother Nature shares and that your whispers will be taken back to the heavens.
I have often thought about the little ants and how “big” we humans are when compared to them. But I’ve always thought about how, if the situation were reversed, I would feel. People don’t always relate to that. “Impossible,” they say. “All insects must die,” they say. But I have wondered, if in our travails through the cosmos, our little blue and green marble could happen upon other beings who are larger and more powerful. While I don’t think this is a probability in the near future, we just never know. But in the mean time, here on earth I treat “the least among us” with respect. They know and understand things we humans cannot fathom. And one day, in this life or the next, we might just find ourselves needing help by those “least” among us who had a wisdom beyond what we humans ever comprehended, to know just the right thing to do.
Ah…just some Sunday morning thoughts. I hope you’ve had a wonderful week, dear friend! I’ve thought of you often as I take a moment here and there to venture out into my own little garden and see the critters….
Thank you for this beautiful piece of writing. Your heart is as big as the sky…with blackbirds rejoicing in freedom and beauty.

I loved your Sunday morning thoughts Cynthia.. There is always something bigger than us within Nature.
Mother Nature herself has and will continue to teach us of her might.. And that when we upset the balance there is a consequence.
We humans think we know best.. And have interfered with many species over time, and nature as a result has become imbalanced as one species then runs riot with no predators to keep the balance in check.. Which is why Life and Death run side by side..
We on the other hand create wars and diseases to keep our species in check.. As there are those who think we can not sustain our levels of population.
Yet there really is plenty for all,, If we ruled out the greed of mankind, and shared that which we would sooner throw away in food..
When you look into statistics you see the horror of food waist, so we can have a straight carrot and parsnip .. Tons of food is ploughed back into the land.. While many starve..
I think Nature may well teach us how to be in balance, when we all find crops no longer being fertilised by Bees because our greed in wanting bigger and better has wiped them out..
Sorry to be shedding a cloud this morning.. But you are right.. We need those insect kingdoms. to survive..
Love and Hugs my friend have a beautiful day.. ❤ Sue xx

Good to see you pottering about in the veggie garden again Sue. It’s always good to do our own garden you never know what toxic chemicals there are on the store-bought vegetables. Take Care

How I found myself in your words, dear Sue, as you described the very circumstances that I myself have experienced. The Flow of your words prodded my Soul and the questions you asked are the very ones I have asked as I worked the soil, yet did not think to write about. Yet here you are with your unique and talented way to express life in ways that hopefully get all readers to really think and ponder the Miracle of Life. Life and death live side by side. Now that for some reason just jumped right out at me. Worlds within worlds. That too. Recently I wrote a post about being a fly and seeing the world from a fly’s view. This is an amazing post, one that I will think upon this whole day through. I am just so glad I came on by …. Thank you for sharing your Blessed Thoughts. Much Love to you! 💚💚💚

Thank you dear Amy, I know we both love our Earth Connection and our gardens, and nothing beats that connection when we touch our earth Mother and feel her heartbeat beneath our fingers..
So thank you so much for your lovely comment Amy.. I hope you have had a lovely relaxing weekend.. And got over your vehicles reluctant ways in getting out of that ditch.. LOL… But the photo was worth it.. ❤
HUGS xx

Great musings Sue, I fear humans would not fare so well. Some would like yourself who do not need to rely on a supermarket to survive lol….Ant is a great totem too. xxx

Your beautiful heart shines in the way you have written this post, dear Sue! I understand exactly what happened and also how you felt. If we as humans are aware of the impact we have on each other, what a wonderful thing that would be. But I believe we go in and out of other’s lives…human or living being…and we are not aware of the impact we have and the energy we leave. Your post made me think about how I treat others and what I leave behind.
I hope you are wonderful…your allotment looks super 😉
Sweet blessings to you, dear Sue!! ❤
