Please help save our Bee’s

Most of you know how passionate I am about Gardening and doing so without pesticides or herbicides. Progress of my garden and allotment can be found HERE

So it was with great dismay I learnt of the decision of our British Government to allow certain banned pesticides to be used on farms here in the UK.

Please Sign the Petition here Thank you.

The following article is from Avaaz,

Dear friends,

The government has just allowed bee-killing pesticides to be unleashed across Britain’s farms, threatening the butterflies and bugs we rely on to grow our food.

Scientists’ warnings got these pesticides banned across the European Union, but the government has caved in to the powerful pesticide industry and the National Farmers Union to let them be used here again. It’s up to us to stop this madness — if we continue to poison our pollinators, the hedgerows, fields and fruit trees of this country will end up silent.

Overturning a decision like this is going to take an unprecedented number of us speaking up. But we can do it: nearly 3% of British internet users are getting this email. If each of us signs and gets just one friend to sign we can reach 6%, if each of us gets two people, we can reach 9%, etc etc. Sharing the petition online could have the ripple effect we need — click to sign now and share on Facebook, Twitter, email, everywhere:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/save_the_bees_keep_the_ban_national/?blGazab&v=62464

While the rest of Europe has backed a ban and seen their bee numbers are continuing to recover, the farming lobby in Britain has always preferred an industrialised chemical-powered approach to agriculture and with an attitude which says “as long as the yields are good, to hell with the consequences!”

It’s true that some reports show that neonicotinoids can deliver a short-term improvement on harvests, yet if we carry on using these pesticides the wider impact on critical pollinators will be catastrophic. Last Parliament, we saw how frustrated the government can get when presented with evidence-based science, doing all it could to block Europe bee-saving moratorium for pesticide use. Now it wants to go it alone across our green and pleasant lands.

But we know they are nervous — gagging scientists from speaking out and burying notes from previous meetings. We have also seen how u-turns are possible, with the fox hunting vote killed off — but that was only possible because a petition went completely viral with thousands of people sharing with their friends and family. Let’s do it this time for the bees. Sign the petition and share it now everywhere you can think:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/save_the_bees_keep_the_ban_national/?blGazab&v=62464

Two years ago, Avaaz members across Europe came together to introduce the first continent wide-ban on neonicotinoids. Let’s do it again and get rid of these crazy poisons in the UK once and for all.

With hope and determination,

Sam, Nick, Luis, Antonia, Lisa and the whole Avaaz team

HoooOOOWWWwwwwLLLooo Sue 🙂 Yes the bee plight is very worrying. It’s a shame they can’t change places with the fly invasion currently afflicting our bathroom! There’d be no problem then! Gone through a whole can of fly spray in two days thought all was well only to find another invasion of little ones taking over last night. Not that I fancy a bee invasion either but at least it would be positive for them! xx

Sorry to hear you have got an invasion.. Lemon grass is a very good deterrent, Also flies do not like Geraniums so maybe a pot of flowers in the windowsill? Thats why in Austria and Switzerland they have those huge window boxes on every outer window. As many of those old farm type buildings with cows obviously attracted lots of flies. Hense the geraniums to deter the flies from entering their open window in summer.. 🙂 I know a useless piece of information.. :-D… but thought I would share.. Hoooooooowwwwwwwllllllls 🙂

Not useless!! Don’t say that! It’s actually great info and very interesting too. I had been wondering about plants/flowers and wondering if they would hinder or help the situation, But i had no idea where to begin. You have given me some great ideas! Thank you Sue! I think we’re more or less on top of things now but there’s still the odd baby one knocking around the shower door so it could recurr if no further action is taken. And prevention is so much better than cure 🙂 Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom Sue and please never think anything you have to say and share, and offer is ever anything less than great, helpful and enlightening 🙂 Without sharing of knowledge we would all be uneducated and ignorant and lacking in any kind of unity 🙂 Love and hugs, Wolfie 🙂

I am sure Wolfie there are lots of herbal remedies to knock out flies if you look on the internet… ❤ Failing all of that you can always have a word with the insect deva's and ask them politely to go and irritate some other person 😀 xxx

Ah yes…nasty old pesticides. ..good point…Black mark for Wolfie! Haven’t heard of herbal remedies but will check out for future invasions 😉 It’s usually ants at this time of year. You will be horrified to know in environmental terms that due to last summer’s vampire bug monstrosity invasion I now live in a permanent insecticidal haze in my room lol in order to keep them under control. Most insect life dies on contact with the carpet now! Terrible Wolfie…but seeing as the room next door has proved to be a fresh haven for the survivors who managed to do the equivalent of a few weeks worth of biting and feeding in the space of an hour when the new tenant moved in, presumably because no regular pesticide treatment programme was in place I make no apologies to the environment for my own use!! Even pest control can’t keep them down completely anymore and they’re becoming a huge problem for everyone. Here they’re isolated to one room for some reason and I have every intention of keeping it that way!! Control via insecticides is essential as eradication isn’t possible. And yes! That room IS awaiting treatment but the tenants don’t seem to want to leave preferring the insecticidal haze it would seem! To anyone else who asks lol its air freshener!! 😉

Sounds like you have lots of ‘little’ problems 😀 .. Insects hold little messages too.. Like what is irritating you? and what is ‘pestering’ you.. :-D… Good luck through the chemical fog.. And you have to do what you have to do for peace of mind.. I had to laugh at (most insects die on contact with the carpet now).. Kamikaze style if they venture into Wolfies flat.. 🙂 I hope the epidemic ends soon ..Big smiles.. 🙂 xxx

        Dear Sue,

thanks for your kind reply. I wasn’t sure if they count the ones that aren’t from British citizens, but now I signed it too. I’m not sure what these people are thinking, to pass laws like that … or whether they are actualy being threatened by the industry. But even the people in the industry are just humans, they live on the same planet, so what do they think to gain by killing off the bees? I don’t understand it.

        Thanks for spreading the word!

        All the best for you,

Here in the states we already see a decline in the bees. Our government is pushing for GMO’s. The manufacturers can add whatever they want to our food and they don’t have to inform us. Some of the politicians are fighting the bill however most people don’t understand the devastation that will follow. Food is our sustance and if it is tainted we will be riddled with many more health problems. They are raising chickens here then being sent to China to be processed. It doesn’t make sense.Good luck.

No Kim. it doesn’t make sense at all about the chickens…Its all about profits and lining big businessmans pockets.. Its not about conservation or health issues.. In fact we are constantly being ‘poisoned’ with chemicals of one sort or another.. I so I agree nothing makes sense when they know its harmful.. Unless they want to depopulate the Earth!.. another dark tunnel to explore which I won’t 😦 .. And yes GMO I am against its the beginning of the end if they continue along this road…

Good piece of social activism, Sue, appreciate your crusading spirit. I have added my signature, as I have seen the ill effects of chemical pesticides like endosulfan, that was widely used in cashew plantations in North Kerala, my home state in India. The poison got into the eco system, and generations of people were affected before the government got into the act to ban the pesticide. That said, agriculture and crops need to be protected from pests, to avoid hard labour of poor farmers getting dashed in damage to crops. This can be achieved by herbal concoctions based on neem oil, dried tobacco, mixed with other harmless ingredients. But, for sure, making it is a little cumbersome and time consuming. However, it needs to be done in the interest of preserving our eco system, instead of taking the easy way out by buying harmful chemical pesticides and liberally spraying it on plants and crops. High time the co-operatives of farmers, agro-scientists and industry got together to set up production of harmless herbal pesticides on commercial scale. Otherwise, we will be seeing more and more people dying of cancers…best wishes.. Raj.

Many thanks dear Raj. yes I know only too well how many chemicals of various sorts have affected India my friend.. And the neem oil and tobacco mix sounds a wonderful option. One I had not heard about before, so you taught me something today..

So very true.. but we all know its about those Big Boys in Business whose ruler is profits not health. And yes you are right again.. I am positive many Cancers are due to the ingestion of chemicals both eaten and drunk, along with breathed in. Many Many thanks dear Raj for your Kind addition of your Signature _/\_

Same thing is happening in the US and on these Hawaiian Islands. We kid ourselves if we think Monsanto is going to easily step back from their goal to control the world’s food chain. I have noticed considerable blossoms on various fruits here this season, but very little setting fruit. This is of great concern to those of us who love the bees and plant everything we can to encourage them – and they still don’t show up. Hand pollination is an option, but who wants to contemplate a world without bees? We are in much greater trouble than we think, if we shrug them off as unnecessary. Aloha and Cheers, Sue.

Excellent cause Sue, Bees are probably the most vital part of our ecosystem, for their size their value is immense, have signed your petition.
Bees and I have a healthy respect for each other, a couple of times of being bitten by bush Bees gave me a very nasty reaction, Epipen now carried in the car, can’t blame the Bee though, the bush Bees are very active and aggressive.

Thank you so much Ian Emu for signing, its greatly appreciated 🙂 sorry to hear you are allergic to them. I was sat watching them earlier we have lots of bumble bees around at the moment.. And they are taking advantage of the snap dragon flowers I grew from seeds.(Antirrhinum ) and how much strength it takes for the bee to push open the mouth of the flower to get to the pollen.. We watched as each bee came out it wiped its head with his front legs transferring the pollen to his back legs.. So quick you didn’t have to blink lol.. Thankfully our garden is bee friendly and we get along without disturbing each other. I have just been looking at your variety of bees here ( http://www.aussiebee.com.au/gallery.html ) Abd some do look a little fierce! .. Unlike the fury bubble bee in the UK. http://www.opalexplorenature.org/treebumblebee

My mint is leggy and well past time to trim back, but flowers have developed and the bees are enjoying them — so I do not have the heart to cut them back yet. I only learned this year that two large home improvement centers have been found to decrease the bee population — I cannot believe they are still selling, and people are still buying. 😦

yes its mainly out of ignorance on the part of those buying.. but big companies should be aware of how their products affect nature in particular Bees. And once you are aware then we should be responsible for our actions and boycott the products harmful to bees.
We the consumers are the problem in the supply and demand..

it was Einstein who said: “Remove the bee from the earth and at the same stroke you remove at least one hundred thousand plants that will not survive.”.. and when you do the maths you will see how the food chain soon is affected. ❤
