Re-connecting to our Earth Mother.

“Every part of this soil is sacred in the estimation of my people. Every hillside, every valley, every plain and grove, has been hallowed by some sad or happy event in days long vanished.”

The above quote is part of Chief Seattle’s original speech of 1854, as reported by Henry Smith in 1887.

Rufford Lake

We spend so much of our time indoors, especially in the winter months, as we become so focused on the busyness of our lives. We become disconnected from our Mother Earth.

These two followed us some distance

These two Geese followed us some distance checking we had given them the last of the grain.

It is this time of year that the lack of sunshine can bring on the doldrums of feeling low in spirit  and the  SAD syndrome  And even I was feeling depleted in energy as I missed connecting to my garden and going for walks over the last couple of weeks.

Winter in our Allotment

How our allotment plot is looking at the moment.Looking tired but still full of Goodness yet to harvest.

I was commenting recently with a fellow blogger as I said the majority of those in cities are now so disconnected to Mother Nature, and this is often what is lacking in our lives… We spoke on how much better we always feel when we connect back with Nature, from either walking or spending time near water or trees..

Snowdrops in the wood

Snowdrops in the Woodland Walk

Snowdrops

Much of what we truly need can only be found under the naked sky, alongside tall trees, on open plains, or in the sound of running water. As our energy re-connects back to the whole of which we are all a part..

Feeding the Birds

Feeding a Chaffinch along our walk with bird seed

Being in nature connects us to the earth, grounding us as we walk, unhindered by concrete, upon her. Surrounded by other living beings, both bigger and smaller than we are, we remember that human beings are simply one form of life in this vast universe.Rose Hips.. Natures own Vitimins

We instinctively know that nature is good for us on many levels. Even if you live in a city or find it difficult to travel to a forest or the countryside, there are many ways to reconnect with nature.

Rose Hips a natural source of vitamin C.

When you step out of your door each morning,  allow your senses to absorb your surroundings.  Breathe deeply, listen to the wind, or it may be the rain upon the pavements.. So many of us run around not wanting to get wet… Yet the rain is cleansing and is the Life Giver to this planet, smell it on the grass, and if you have no grass, watch the circular ripples in the puddles. See the reflections in the water and watch the droplets run down your window panes..

 Autumn Fruits Rose Hips

Just pause for a moment and take in Nature’s beauty and colours, and remember each breath you breathe Nature has provided we  so take our breath for granted. Allow your senses to embrace the gifts Mother Nature has to offer us every day. As you spend time re-connecting with Nature she is also healing you, that is why we all feel so much better for a walk in the fresh air away from the concrete pavements.

( And preferably watch where you put your feet and don’t fall )

Big smiles..

Many thanks for all your wonderful well wishes.

I am feeling much lighter of Spirit.

I Will be catching up with you all very soon..

Love and Blessings

~Sue~

Great wisdom and reminders here Sue.
I believe our disconnected lives are part of the reason we have so many environmental woes. Reconnecting with nature can bring healing for all. And maybe you know this, but “earthing” is a practice of walking around on the earth with no shoes to literally & physically connect to the healing & grounding energies of mother earth.
    blessings for healing, Brad

How lovely put and true Sue! Your last words made me smile because they reminded me of a day in Spring last year when I wanted to reconnect with Nature… And found myself hopping across a field to avoid an abundance of Cow pats 🙂 I am glad your spirits have lifted! Xxx

Indeed, one can be grounded in a very practical manner and that is via an earthing sheet on the bed. In other words, being connected to the ground, literally and metaphorically, is core to who we are. As that fabulous quotation from Chief Seattle so perfectly underlines.

Yes, I need grounding a lot of the time. I feel like flying away so many times, I feel God is so lovely and beautiful, I miss his land, but then God says to look around and appreciate his beautiful creation, that I might not get a second chance, so I should be in it, feel it, drink it, his creation, it is beautiful! ❤

Nature heals where many other things can’t. I think the opportunity for introspection increases when you are out in nature walking. I get a lot of my best ideas when I am up early walking Earl. I think there is something fundamental about taking every opportunity that we can to engage with nature and remember that we are part of nature, not the other way around! Glad you are feeling better Ms Sue. Here’s to knowing when to look down. We do it a lot around here, we keep chooks! 😉

Thank you for sharing another great reminder! This time of the year it’s dark when I get home in the afternoon, dark when I leave home in the morning. Important to remember to go outside…
I have gone through half of the film “grounded” and believe what I heard this far. It would be strange if we did not got “healed” by the earth, it’s the natural thing for us.

    Have great Sunday (soon?!)

Perhaps, Sue, if people revisited what was/is really important to them and put that awareness into active practice, we’d see people being less ‘creatures of comfort’ (as in not getting outdoors in the winter months) and more creatures of of renewed connection. Your post is a reminder as well as a call to action!

I am so glad your spirits have lifted, Sue. Sometimes we Earth Angels get overwhelmed or zapped, or unable to face this world at times. I happened to read Trini’s comment and there was a phase of my Life I felt the same way. Then the BAM’s began, which has a really funny way of grounding one to this realm, rather then the one I would prefer to be in. The closest I come to flying these days is when I am behind my camera. There is a post coming where you will see me behind the camera, doing something I did not know I did until hubby caught it in a shot. You’ll just have to wait and see. LOL I am not telling. I Love you, Sue. Hang in there! (((HUGS))) Amy

Snow drops to me are the very first of our spring flowers to show themselves… They are a personal symbol I would get from my guides when giving clairvoyant messages.. When they showed me snowdrops, I knew the person I was reading for was strong, even though perhaps appearing delicate.. for the symbol of snowdrops meant they could push through the most frozen of Earth, and snow to peep through and bring their delicate blooms for others to enjoy..

Without Nature we would all be lost.. 🙂 xxx ❤

    Dear Sue,

That’s a great reminder for the need to be conscious of where we come from. The very action of you taking the photos and musing about the ‘Outside’ is in itself a connection, is it not?

What is it that makes us dwell within our own-selves? To me this arises from the perception of “I” being inside myself and everything else being out there. So whenever I am looking at the world, somehow it assumes a mindset of “Me versus the outside”. Do you notice a kind of tug-of -war in this perspective?

But what if I were to consider myself in the space of “Out there” where the world is, where life is? Do you see how the perspective shifts to one of a common ‘showing’ in which I and the world exists without any competitive tug-of-war? As we practise to gain this perspective, we would intuitively spend more of our time out there……with Nature.

Somehow, reading your post, the following immortal lines by William Wordsworth started playing in my mind.

“For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
    Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
    And dances with the daffodils.”

    Blessings.

Shakti, as always it is a pleasure to have you drop by and leave me your most welcome comment upon my post..
and as ever you make us think even deeper as is your trade mark as you leave your kind footprints upon my pages..
      You said–
“So whenever I am looking at the world, somehow it assumes a mindset of “Me versus the outside”. Do you notice a kind of tug-of -war in this perspective?”

Often.. And usually the tug of war derives from the internal battle of wills going on.. Mostly the Ego whose voice can be indomitably loud ..

Big smiles at the Host of Golden Daffodils poem.. It is one of my favourites as is Wordsworth …

      Thank you dear Shakti…
Blessings returned to you my friend..

These cold, dark winter days, which often feel like perpetual cold and darkness do nothing to help the mood do they? I’m pleased to read you’re feeling lighter of spirit and I hope that continues, but remember you’re not alone feeling how you do/have been. Walking amongst nature is a wonderful antidote I couldn’t agree more. I just wish opportunities would present themselves to be acted on! Won’t be long before Spring arrives though! Look forward to it especially when you’re not enjoying the day too much 🙂 Every cold, bleak, dark day is bring us a step closer to the light and sunshine xx

Sue my computer has been down. No problem it does not govern my life.
I just went with the flow of Mother Nature.
Back into the neglected garden, out with the sketch book and pencils.
More time to look after number one in the gym.
Pauline took my Ipad to the Apple shop and got it working but not for long.
I still could not do my blog, I had a password problem.
Again Pauline sorted it out or I would still have been in the garden wrestling with Mother Nature.
I am pleased you over come you problem in the same way.
This is a great post demonstrating how therapeutic getting out and appreciating natures gifts can be. _/\_

Sue, it breaks my heart to see so many closed up inside not only in the winter, which I can understand, but in the nice weather as well. I had quite the surprise this fall when after being told how my youngest granddaughter would ask to come inside shortly after going outside she began to refuse to come in when I took her out. This past month her father, who had monthly date nights with her, asked her what she wanted to do. He first offered to take her to a move, but after checking out trailers she declared there was nothing she wanted to see. She then asked if she could go sledding in the snow. So for an hour in single digit temps daddy and daughter played in the snow. 🙂 We just need to be reminded of how much fun we can have outdoors.

Good to know you are allowing time and rejuvernating in body and mind.
Nature is the only cure for whatever our ails may be, be it through her bountiful fruits or her bountiful beauty.
The smile of the sun in the morning has more curative powers than any other medicine, the sounds of the birds play more sweetly on our hearts than any orchestra, a beautiful moon is a masterpiece of Natures art.
Natures medicine is all around us.
    Cheers
