Knowing Empathy.

I have sat down many times this past couple of weeks with pen poised over blank pages in my journal. My head full of so many things that are crying to be heard, yet they will not tumble out onto the page.

My heart has broken, with every mother’s cry, my tears have risen at the slightest cause. So, I put down my pen, and pick up my brushes and I paint.

I paint into the eyes of another whose own story of their kind have also known the burden of humans who seek glory in their power of weapons.

My bones have become heavy, my heart heavier still, and a tiredness sweeps over me like a wave that saps the energy from me that I have found myself just wanting to sleep, and shut down the replay of the internal chatter and visions that screams to be let out.

I have tried shutting out the world, and lost. Because the world is within me, and I am within the world, we are one.

At times I can detach, step back, but then I have to look in as the observer, and what I observe is the reality portrayed through a key hole of a window through the lens of those whose view is wanting us to feel as I have been feeling, helpless, and bereft.

But we are not helpless, we are strong, but we have to be prepared for change. I have said many times being empathic is not an easy journey. It can wear you down, drain you, and drag you into the depths of despair if you allow it to grab hold of you.  You have to be strong and realise not all moods are your own. And you have to understand how our energy is being affected in our addictive behaviours we may not think we are subjected to. But we are all of us being played in this game of life.

So I will keep painting a while longer as I leave you with these words I wrote some time ago

Knowing!

Here is the thing about internal knowing

It’s difficult to explain in words that are glowing

For many people step away, thinking you quite queer

When they do not understand, and live in fear.

~~

Our internal dialogue will banter to and fro

Revealing the truth, is something you just know

No words can describe the feelings deep inside

When you get this knowing, which inside resides

~~

We can search out all the knowledge written down in books

But a few of us find our answers, until inside ourselves we look

Once we’ve found the key, that opens up our hearts

That’s when our Knowing, and knowledge begins to start

~~

Trusting in our instincts each have long forgot

Brings that instant knowing, as we focus on the plot

You then begin to see the world through a different set of eyes

As you realise this world is made up of many lies

~~

The deeper that you focus, you uncover many layers

As you peel away your skins, ignoring all the stares

You begin to understand there’s more than man-made laws

And as the Knowing grows, so you open up more doors

~~

The labyrinth of life, well hidden in the maze

Stands right before you, hidden from your gaze

Make-believe becomes real, while reality is but a dream

While everything you touch has holographic seams

~~

The pathway to knowing, is letting go of what you know

Because when you open your heart, love begins to flow

Love is the key, it may turn you inside out

Universal laws, you will see no one can flout

~~

You then begin to see, we reap what we have sown

When you access ‘The Knowing’ your heart begins to grow

Knowing what I do, I often feel quite sad

That most have lost their knowing, and no, I’m not quite Mad!

Ah Sue, that ‘knowing’ is a glow, it touches all our thoughts regardless where we stand.
But while the walls from our fears block it, we fill the gaps with our ‘what if’s’. We are still attracting other’s fears and emotions to us because we are not standing in the total confidence of that unconditional space within ourselves that it brings.
I have seen and touched that unconditional, and its beauty is so incredible with its wall-less, fear-less, what if-less way of being, that I was totally at peace.
But that is what this world is for, to find that place within ourselves. I too need to paint with my heart, to find my love and peace within to re-balance myself in a world that tests us.
And we are loving ourselves by taking that time out, not feeling selfish because the world ‘expects’ us to be this way or that, but learning the one thing to find that inner peace and beauty…self love. And it can only be found as we see the wisdom of understanding our fears, disarming that power it had over us, releasing our hearts to give from a more open and peaceful way, to others and us.
Enjoy your time Sue, nothing can be more balancing than standing in your gift, a true loving that gives both ways, within and without ❤

I agree Mark, sometimes I allow the world to crowd in too close for comfort, and a series of events triggered a response within me that I needed time out away and time to reflect all that I am. And just paint and create to find that balance within once more.. The snow here is also cleansing and refreshing, I needed to create some space for myself. And each time I go within I come out much stronger. Thank you for always being so supportive Mark and ‘Knowing’ just the words I need to hear. Many thanks my friend. Sue ❤ xx

Yes as empaths one can go to the depths of despair with others. I have developed ways not to drain me. I am not saying it won’t happen again I am just saying I have developed new thoughts to protect myself and still help others. Beautiful poem and such wisdom. Sending you healing

Sue, I appreciate your kindness and wish for peace all around us but you have to keep yourself calm as your own emotional health is more important. it grieves me that you couldn’t write a word though your head was full of so many things that were crying to be heard! Keep your worry a little within bounds dear friend.
Thanks for that lovely poem about knowing…we know a lot that our instincts tell us yet answers elude us! What a sad state of affairs!

Many thanks for your kindness dear Betty, yes, I tell myself often I will not allow myself to be swallowed by emotions of the world, then the world breaks open the cracks within me and out pours the grief of feeling another’s suffering. I trained myself to protect.. But those cracks had a life force all of their own and the flow of tears would not be shut down. So I allowed them to pour and cleanse, and now I feel empty but refreshed, just as the snow arrives here to cleanse some more.. 🙂
Many thanks Betty, I appreciate your thoughtful energy.. ❤ Much love Sue xx

To be empathetic is a challenge, we get a lot, but we are also in danger of abusing ourselves or to let others in control.
Your own health first, otherwise you are not able to help anyway.
Enjoy your painting and wish you a beautiful and peaceful weekend, dear friend.

Dearest Annika, I am happy my own words helped you. Sometimes we have to step back from ourselves in order to see what is happening to us. And I should know by now not to allow myself to be so open to ‘feeling’ but sometimes I fail to step back, and instead place myself in the situation from which I see suffering. And it overwhelms me. ‘Knowing’ what I do I should ‘Know’ Better.. But my human in me is still filled with my emotional Being. Sometimes I see into the horizon a little future than I should, and this ‘knowing’ while a gift can also be a curse. So learning to become the Observer and detached while the words sound easy to achieve, are often fraught with emotions. So I have to shut down, focus upon something and Art is my life saver..
Much LOVE, and thank you Annika so very much xx ❤

Hi dear Harriod, it is always a delight to have your comments my friend, and yes, I feel we both understand this ‘Knowing’ as we have delved deeper into the abyss of life and living. And yes I so know we should let go of that which we know more often, allowing and trusting that deeper sense to prevail.
Sometimes my ‘knowing’ takes me deeper than it should, and the sadness that I feel for our collective is at times great.. Yet I have to ‘Shift’ my own perspective and see things from the whole perspective, not the personal one or the individuals who are suffering. But even knowing that, does not stop my own emotions surfacing and bubbling. When the world is blinded by itself. Yet it only has to look in the mirror to reflect upon the answers.. And it
all comes back down to Love.
Many thanks dearest Hariod.. Much LOVE to you also my friend ❤

There is nothing worse than the feeling that all is lost: that Good loses and Evil is everywhere. While acknowledging the truth that drains the peace from our world, we must bring our Good back into that world. Stay strong, Sue: the world needs your voice.

I am certain given we were all bombarded with good News each and every day Society would be a very happier place.. But that is not in the interests of the few. For it is fear that is controlling, Happy genes creates people who are inspired to be themselves and not the puppets tied down with strings being pulled..

I love how you said the world was inside you and you are in the world. Yes, we are all one and in the end, we cannot really detach and pretend we have nothing to do what happens in the world. We are all connected and everyone (!) is part of what happens here. That’s why everyone can do something to bring light into this world in their own personal way. If everyone did, we would illuminate this planet in an instant!

I hear you deeply Sue. Can’t shut out the world as the world is in me. Those living in fear can never relate or understand the who now sees clearly. The one has to continue on the path courageously, company comes and goes as each is on his journey. Yet we are all in this together.

Wise you are to take care of yourself these days. You are not alone in the heaviness/drain you have been feeling. You are not alone in any of the sentiments offered here.

You know, dear Sue, a fellow blogger was saying recently that she used to believe it was possible for a concerted effort by a majority to change the world. She no longer feels this way, perhaps because as we get older, we realize humans have always repeated history in one form or another. And it may just be the way of this world, being as we exist in paradox, contrast and adversity. Meanwhile, though, we Can take action in self realization, in small acts of kindness, affecting others in ways we cannot know or predict. We can create, adding beauty to the world. We can pray for humanity, if moved to do so. Of course we are One, yet the only part of that body of Oneness we have control over is our own thoughts and actions as the web connecting us continues to stretch, expand and contract.

Thanks always for your earnest posts and your attempts to understand our place in this amazing world. I am sure we all continue gaining knowledge as a result of your tireless efforts. Sending you love and breath. ❤ ❤ ❤

Sometimes the task we both know at hand seems too great, yet we also both know about tipping points. Which way the seesaw swings is up to us, which is why I had to clear my head as I was getting dragged back down into the mire.. There is much beauty out in the world and much more goodness than evil. And although we neither of us can change others actions, we can change our own. Feeling as we do takes effort on our parts to rise up above that which the world throws out.
Choosing to see LIGHT instead of the Darkness, yet not turning a blind eye to the shadows takes energy. I agree with you about us getting older, we see repeated History patterns as we make the same mistakes as a society. Fearfully holding onto that which is thought to control and never being brave enough to stand up with courage to roar in outrage at what we know is not right. But then as we step back to become the observer, we see another dimension. We see without the shadow, would we know the Light? and is not the Darkness setting us to change the shadows, finding that lighter shade is the balance. We came here to this world to experience both extremes, both are our reality, because of choice and free will.
Learning and growth comes from seeing as our friend Val is always teaching us, that ‘Middle Ground’ Balance, and Love are key ingredients to joining our Unity consciousness. And without the struggles and sufferings of those who are volunteering to open up our hearts, we would be lost.
May we keep on stretching and expanding in the web of life dear Bela.. And may Love unite us through our tears of compassion.

Love and Blessings.. and Many many thanks ❤ ❤ xxx

Nice to know I’m not alone.

Empathy burns like fire sometimes, the rage I feel at the callous murder of men, women and children whose only crime is to be trapped in places where enemies battle using wholesale slaughter, the pain I feel when someone is injured and I have to breath through it as I concentrate on cleaning and bandaging wounds.

The pain comes later along with the baggage of someone else’s feelings and distress, but afterwards when I have the freedom to let it flow through me.

How can I give voice to how I feel when the words are not enough???

    Love and hugs.

So many things are happening around us, the fluid state of mind we are constantly in and how that state changes and we are caught in such difficult situations to liberate ourselves from that compelling vortex. I have gone through the similar state where we have so much to share but when we have the pen and paper in front of us,no avail, nothing comes out, it does appear that the same thoughts start playing a tricky game with us and we get desperate and we want those inflated ideas to land in our white paper but not to be case. We look for alternative ways to get ourselves meaningfully engaged and work out with those thoughts in a different ways, painting is such a magical engagement it does help us to properly mitigate the challenges we face in putting those texts to our thoughts, when the plethora of colors gives the relief much needed by us.

Empathy is such a powerful word but it is equally powerful to adapt when it comes to putting it into practice, never easy as so rightful pointed out. Many times we want to break free and cut ourselves off from the world outside, and we get deceptively trapped, as there is no such world outside, it is everything inside us and we go for wild goose chase in the wilderness of life and come back empty handed as everything is within us and we don’t to accept and embrace those facts of life and try to dabble with the illusions and run after few such elusive things in life knowing well that it cannot be possessed nor it can command the way we want our life to navigate the journey we have embarked. There is struggle, there is fear, there is helplessness, there is callousness, there is agony and there is these deep adversity where we need to deep dive to spot the advantage we can pull out for ourselves, and there is no one way and there is no right way, and there are many ways and there are always better ways…we need to be vigilant and we need to accept the reality of life and realize the potential it has provided we recognize and get the part that best suited to us.

Looking forward to your next painting and you have the nature and you have the canvas, what can this pen do to stop you, it can only few times try to block you but that is what it can only do and the next time you will come with something more brilliant and the combination of painting and poetry is epitome of creative confluence that can make our mind and imagination work in tandem.
    Thanks as always.
Hope dear Sue you had a great Sunday.

You understand empathy well Nihar, and yes there is no escaping the outside world, for it resides within, for we are the creators of the outside world with our inner thoughts.

When we, ( I ) allowed that pressure to build it can indeed seem like an uphill struggle, for we feel so very helpless and our efforts seem only to be pinpricks of light we are contributing. But all we can do is contribute the energy of self. And be the best we can be, knowing all of those pinpricks of light when joined as one can become a blaze of light so dazzling it can extinguish all darkness.

I believe in the collective, and while I felt the pain of others so deeply it knocked me sideways for a while, I also know there are many such as we who are contributing to the wellbeing of our planet by going within to create, and manifest through love and our imagination.

Many thanks dear Nihar, I so value your contribution here to Dreamwalker's Sanctuary .. Thank you 🙂

The pathway to knowing, is letting go of what you know
Because when you open your heart, love begins to flow

Love those words Sue, but we also know that the empathy involves a knowing of a different kind, a sympathy that must involve a sensitivity which can be painful when we feel what others are going through. Being a sensitive is no joke and carries with it pain and also responsibility … something which we accept when we tread the path to healing. Bless you Sue, Love, David x 🙂

There are times, my friend, that it is good to take a respite and be quiet within oneself. But the world can never be totally put at bay for it would mean not being with others at all and it is most times that others bring the world to us by one means or another. It can be overwhelming and empathy is a good thing but to be empathetic without being empathy consumed is best. I am always looking for the happy medium and often find myself on the fringes of chaos looking in, for at least for myself I feel it is the best I can do to send out messages to the angels of the universe and know that everything changes and that is true. You have a good heart and it shows in all you do. In each photograph you take, in each item you make, in every stroke of your brush and with each word that you pen. Be well. xoxo

Well said my friend. We’ve talked about empathy before. It is extremely hard to live with, especially in these violent, thoughtless times! It rips into your heart and begins to shred it to pieces…You are wise to paint and stay clear of what you can. The insanity is endless but our energy is not so we must take care of ourselves. I think we still have a long way to go …I’ve mentioned before the ideas and concepts of Buckminister Fullers brilliance and he speaks to the fact it takes at least one generation to make complete change. That is quite a long while. We are slogging through and making progress, but we need to save our strength for the final battle. Let the fools outdo themselves like they are right now, they’ll be tired at the end…..Stay at peace my friend and keep the paint brush moving!!! Hugs and love your way….VK ❤

Oh sweet Sue! I can’t wait to see your painting. 🙂 But this post. This synchronistic post. I wrote a poem that I published today about finding love and compassion when others annoy us. It’s not exactly the same as what you write here, but the emotions definitely are. This empathic life sometimes leaves me reeling. I’m dealing with some stuff at work: folks who are living in their own reality (dream) and are threatened by mine, even though I know it doesn’t affect them. Even those among us who try so hard to be harmonious end up faltering: we are only human. I know my own challenge is meeting their reality with pure love when my own heart is wounded. But it extends beyond that. I don’t understand people who need to own guns and that is the topic of hot debate in the US right now and the ugliness that comes from it tugs at my heart. I feel the need to shield myself and take extra precautions to keep my heart from bleeding too much as the world sorts out its emotions. Your poem here illustrates that the only thing that can fix it is love. I admit that there are days when I just want to swat people with the wind of glitter to make them smile and dang it, to turn on the river of love and let it flow from their hearts. I don’t understand (and yet, I do) the need to keep the doors locked. I know it’s fear. I know it’s trauma but if they could just open up and see…they would know that their fears and traumas don’t matter when it comes to love – when it comes to the contentment I know they would feel. Yet they choose a path of pain, the one that keeps you from ever finding peace and bliss. I suppose that’s what empaths help the world with: the gentle souls who just want to show the world that love wins. It has to be patient and wait an awful long time sometimes, but ultimately the path of love is the only sure way. Thank you for your beautiful words here and stirred my heart into writing a bit of a poetic comment here. I’m sending you light as I imagine absorbing some of yours as I read here. Sending you all the hugs, light, love, and good thoughts necessary for a wonderful week ahead. ❤

Dear Cynthia indeed we are in sync right now, and we both have been affected by recent world events. And I agree with you.
Given the perspective from here in the UK, whose Gun laws are so vastly different I totally agree with you.
And why I so enjoyed your own recent poetry, it so spoke to me.
Love will win, and I want to share a quote from VK’s blog which she posted recently which also spoke.

Painting is meditative and when one paints your emotions spring about change to the world around you and outside. Poetry has this effect. Change and hope is part of spreading the world within to be changed and finding hope on the other side. Beautiful poetry and the message is truth.

Indeed dear Charlie, both arts are healing our inner worlds, as we use our arts to find clarity as we shed the outer layers which often gather tight around our hearts. We have to remember Change begins within, for what we create is reflected back in the outer world.
Love and Blessings, and thank you so much, I appreciate your thoughts Charlie 🙂

Sometimes we do need to take a step or two back and take care of ourselves. And sometimes we can breathe in the moment as we observe from an emotional distance. I’ve been forgetting to do that lately and just want to hide in reading, painting, fixing up the house…. but we can observe in small measures and send out our love as we are ready and able, remembering to love ourselves at the same time. I’m sending love and hugs to you, dear Sue. Take your time and take care. ❤

painting can help release lots of pent up tensions/frustrations and helps us express our innermost feelings while giving us freedom from tight bounderies which can manifest themselves in stunning works of art, or sometimes complete bin fodder, you know where we are when you need to breathe clear air..

One of the great learning elements of using the Headspace meditation app is the section on Anxiety. Comprising 30 ten-minute guided meditations. It recommends learning something that the app calls ‘Noting’. That is that when you experience something that causes one to be anxious then it is ‘noted’ and then one settles back to the calm, restful mental state that the app believes is so good for us. Admittedly that doesn’t come without a degree of practice but what an incredible way of releasing tensions in us!

    Great post, Sue!

This past week I ‘happened’ upon a horrid accident, and for days it was difficult to ‘dismiss it’ – as the images lingered – as if they were branded on my psyche. There are times when talking about what’s heavy on our hearts/souls – just doesn’t work; we need to go inward and work through it..
About a month ago Paulo Coehlo wrote a post about allowing sadness to linger for three days – he would allow it the three days, then escort it out the door… i think it was sadness, but the effect would work on any emotion.. give it time to be acknowledged, but then resume the norm…
I too am still working through something that is still just out of reach – so the silent mode is best for me. i’ve been working on several botanical studies, they’re turning out well – and i’m sure whatever you’re working on will be amazing….

see you when we burst back into the sunlight!

That must have been a hard image to eradicate Lisa, I love what you said about Paulo Coehlo I have many of his books

I think also we should honour our emotions and yet we must be careful not to allow them to swamp us or to wallow in them.
I know from my past how easy it is to get into that downward spiral, as our energy depletes and we are ‘Depressed’ by the negative.. Which is in my own opinion why so many suffer depression. And why in particular even when I had my breakdown many years ago now I found painting so therapeutic, for it allows our focus to concentrate while allowing no other thoughts to penetrate.
So I will look forward to your botanical studies, and yes we will burst out back into the SUN..

Many thanks dearest Lisa… Sending you huge hugs and many thanks for your visit. Xxx ❤

hola amiga, and i see your most-recent post – and understand that need to stay in quiet and introspective mode… i too am experiencing that, and forced myself to drive out today to touch base w/the world…. i had a little boot at the last – to help me – by the sound of a chain saw.. the owner of the property cut down two trees near the house, and immediately the mood of my painting changed, the colors grew darker – not as precise (i’m working on a study of a hummingbird) – and i stopped as soon as possible, gathered my things and put some distance… times like these are when i always wish to have a gazillion dollars and could live in the middle of a huge reserve where nothing’s destroyed.. but the, we all have wooden tables and frames and most likely floors and and and… it’s difficult when a member of your intimate neighborhood is the one to make the sacrifice to be turned into lumber… most likely for much-needed money to keep paying the bills….

wheredo people like us fit into that scene? i find myself wistful to be sent to a new planet…. if i should vanish, perhaps my wish was granted!?!!

        thanks for listening…

I see we are intune as to our vibrations right now Lisa, I can only imagine the disruption and the sadness too, knowing precious trees were being cut down. I have felt like running away this past week deep into some forest lol. Instead I just hibernated and slept. Sometimes Lisa I wonder where we fit in. I really do.. Thankfully I have immersed myself in my painting again on the days the light has been good enough. I have also meditated more, and found myself digging even deeper to clear out that which needs clearing from within one’s self. Thank you for Listening to me also Lisa, I think we are both ready for New Earth, but we have to shed the old vibrations of the old conditioning which are proving to stick like treacle to my aura at least. But I feel a little lighter in spirit, enough to come and moderate my lovely comments which are waiting patiently .. Thank you for your patience. And look forward to your hummingbird xxx ❤

I’ve lived a long time, my friend, and seen much. I thought the world was falling apart in the late 60’s, but as bad as that time was in the U.S., today is more challenging and much more sad. And yet I have hope! I believe in the goodness of people, and I believe love will eventually win out. I just hope I live long enough to see that day.

Love will win the day, History has a habit of repeating itself Bill. Fear is manipulative and contagious. And yes as a teenager in the 60’s I remember well those years.
I allowed myself to wallow in the sadness of the world for a time, as I felt the suffering of others, But as all things are meant to be, So was my needing to go within again. It was productive. And my tears were cleansing. .. Thank you Bill, good to see you. 🙂

Wonderful to see you on here again, Sue. Be prepared for change, and being empathetic is not easy. So agree with that. Change can be scary and uncertain, and the more we plan the more we may be able to handle it head on as and when it does come round. ‘The deeper that you focus, you uncover many layers’ This is such a great line in your poem. Focus is always easier said than done. To me, that is about not rushing but taking things slow and seeing from different angles, trying to figure out what is going on. I suppose you can take the example of getting to know someone: it takes time to truly know someone, and then understand them and how they feel, and then earn their trust.

Hope you are on a great painting journey. Sounds like you are very focused on it and hope you are creating many a masterpiece. Hugs across the miles ❤ xxx

Aww thank you dearest Mabel and for picking up on the point of focusing and uncovering the layers, We often are great at masking ourselves in the layers and never get to remove them to dig deeper to the core of ourselves.. We may not always like what we discover along the way, but we sure need to be brave enough to step into ourselves and take a look. 😉

Your words speak a lot Sue, and describe the world and emotions we must carry and cope with in our current lifetime.
What went wrong ? what happened to the days of peaceful mutual harmony and respect, the days of the simplicity of Childhood innocence, when even adults had understanding, tolerance and respect ?. Today we are forever fighting against those who want to force their beliefs or Ideologies on everyone. The words Rest in Peace, are becoming more enticing each day as we age.

I do not know Ian. I guess the world has always been volatile and we have only to look back out our own combined History of England and Australia and how the mistreatment of children went under the radar for so long. I think in today’s technological age where communication of horrific tales go viral, We all get to know about it in our homes. So we feel the world is only getting worse.. Abuse, and terror has long been present in many lives.
But you would think Ian with the horrors of two world wars behind us and the monstrosities that went on then not to mention Vietnam, the Gulf War and Afghanistan to mention but a few.. Let alone the Pol Pot Genocide regime and others in Uganda under Idi Amin. The world is has been and is full of many evil doers. While forces were set up to stop such atrocities happening again. Such as with the United Nations.. Yet all they do is meet behind tables and talk and those children in Syria are still being bombed, maimed and killed as well as starved.
I think the Human Race is what went wrong. For it seems we have somehow lost our Humanity along the way..
Many thanks for reading Ian.. ❤

“Yet, taught by time,my heart has learned to glow for other’s good, and melt at other’s woe.” Ancient Greek Epic Poet,Homer.
Despite its linguistic roots in ancient Greek, the concept of empathy is of recent intellectual heritage. It’s a very emotive and strong word,a word with substance …
And,Knowing is a big,big tree with many divesre, tangled branches. We have to clmb all,to get to the top of it,we sometimes fall off but we rise and start climbing again and find more and more branches … until we see the unobscured light in the dark core of our inner self … Great your poem,Sue dear, you have reached the point where the exit of the labyrinth is wide open for you 🙂 ❤ xxx

Bless you dearest Doda, for your wonderful comment, a wonderful quote you have left me. Along with your great insight into ‘knowing!’ my friend. To be quite honest with you Doda, I felt like jumping through the labyrinth and off this planet, Not in a negative way, but just so wanted this Old Earth to wake up to itself and what its doing.
And I wish I could convey in words, but I could use a million of them, and none of them could convey what I feel or know.
So we keep on climbing, hanging onto our branches, as we each of us strive to reach to the top. But its time to let go of our roots, and old programmes for that is what keeps pulling us back down.

Love and Hugs my dear Doda, and I thank you very much.. ❤
