How does your Garden Grow?

Just wanted to update you how things in the garden are progressing, some days I have been so tired I have slept in the afternoons, especially in this heat we are not used to this time of year.. It’s definitely growing weather for weeds which have invaded the garden along with aphids, white fly, and a bug which flew in from Europe which is spreading fast throughout the UK.  To view all the news and pictures  please click the link HERE   On my garden blog.

Everything here, where I live in Spain, are almost yellow now, not because of autumn, but because of the dry weather, as we have had until few days ago, where we got some rain. I think, it is months since last rain of more than few drops. It is necessary to watering almost daily here, if we wish anything to survive.
Your garden is so beautiful Sue 🙂

I have been reading about your unusually hot summer. While we in the desert are having unusually cooler weather. Hmmmm, is Mother Earth telling us something? We really, really need to listen! 🙂 BTW – Lovely gardens!!

Like you, we have had relentless sun, 90 degree temps, no rain for weeks. I had a lot of green tomatoes as a result. Had our first cool day today…still no rain. Strange year, Sue. ❤️

Yes Van a strange year.. Today we have rainfall, the gardens sure need it.. Though when it rains it now pours in torrential torrents, more like the tropics, I am sure our jet streams are altering and our weather systems too are changing.. More dramatic thunderstorms here too..
Good luck with the green tomato chutney .. I made loads last year when they didn’t ripen.. This year however lots of tomatoes turning thankfully and the neighbours are happy too 😉

You are amazing, Sue. I do not know where you find the time to blog. It’s been so hot here as well, with so little rain we are in a severe drought. The insects thank God have not been bad and very little of the mosquito has been seen this year as well. I did something this year with my Roses that I normally do not. I just let them go as they want to grow. I did not prune. I did not immediately dead head. I allowed insects to have their way but with a very careful eye watched. I’ve had some years that the insects actually killed two of my rose bushes. We’ve also had invasive insects which are creating havoc with the natural insects. Same goes for some invasive plants not native to this area. I don’t know what is going on, but Mother is not behaving as She normally does. Robins are still here, normally migrating the middle to end of August. Our trees our still mostly green with barely any change of color seen. My flowers have slowed down and I have pulled way back on watering which I had to do almost every day this Summer, a 3 hour job each and every day. But nothing compared to the work you do. I only use chemicals on my roses when the insects are extreme because nothing “green” I have tried has worked. Very challenging this gardening. We don’t put chemicals on our lawn either and hubby actually handpicks the weeds out … a LOT of work. We have one evergreen tree that has been invaded by insects which we are watching closely. We lost an evergreen to these same insects and if this tree worsens we will be forced to use chemicals, something we dread doing. Anyways, I do apologize for the lengthy reply. I could talk gardening all day long. Much Love to you and hubby, dearest Sue!!! ❤ ❤ ❤

You sound just the same as us Amy we hand pick lawn weeds too. Can not be doing with sprays.. I mixed up a spray concoction of crushed garlic bulbs with a little washing up liquid for the aphids- black fly.. Which I discovered were attacking a young camellia plant I had got in spring. They were suffocating the new leaf growth and sapping it of life.. I sprayed it every other day for a week and it got rid of them all and none returned..
Sometimes Amy we wonder where our energy comes from too.. 🙂 And yes I agree about nature, I have never known my Magnolia come into flower twice.. It usually flowers Spring which it did, beautifully.. but I have a second flush of flowers .. The hedgerows are filled with berries, I know we didn’t get late frosts to kill the blossoms this year, But Nature often prepares herself for winter.. And by the amounts of berries I see, which are loaded, we could be in for a harsher winter than the ones we have had recently here..
We have booked a short vacation the beginning of October to Scotland again, so we are looking forward to that,. In the mean time we are doing as much in the allotments to get it ship shape so it can be left for a while.. 🙂
Today the rain has set in, so I am taking advantage of it to catch up here..
And thank you dearest Amy for your lovely most welcome comment..
Hope you too enjoyed your weekend my friend
      Love Sue ❤

I honestly do not know what is going on this year. My Lilac bush is flowering again. My Butterfly bush is flowering for the second time, and it should be dormant by now. Same goes for my Rose of Sharon. It is flowering again. Say what? ROBINS who should have migrated at least one month ago, still here. I cannot begin to close up my gardens because nothing is even dormant now. Spring flowers and again blooming! I have new growth on my roses. Sue, I am so confused by this … And the change of colors in our trees are not happening. I am very concerned that the weather is going to change from hot (which it still is) to brutally cold in a blink of an eye and everything that is flowering will be shocked. I ususally have my fall gardening at least started by now. My inner clock is telling me to get my fall gardening started, but I am not able to. Very very odd ….. ❤

I did a lot of pruning back yesterday in-between sitting and reading, another lovely Sunny day.I cleared a patch which hides our green house in our home garden, and thinned out the bamboo I have as a screen, then decided to lop off some of the Buddleia which had finished flowering which has to be 20 ft high.. Hubby came out and told me off saying he thought I was resting.. I said I am.. 😉 xxx

Now that I no longer have a large garden, I’ve quite forgotten how much work it is. and how much oversight and constant attention is required. And still, nothing beats produce grown by yourself.

The comment about invasive insects is worrying – they could change the balance of life forever… 😦

Yes a sad fact about invasive species and plants that they upset the natural order and balance of things.. Nature has everything under control, it is often we ‘mankind’ who often inadvertently introduce them. So we upset the natural order of things.. But isn’t that what we are doing to the world at large?..
Hope you have had good weekend Prenin. xx

Thank you Carol.. I hadn’t known about the Harlequin ladybug until I looked it up and it was the first time I had seen them.. My daughter said she had them in her home garden last year. On the site I did the report to, these started out in the south of England and now have almost spread across the whole of the country since 2003 .. Not good news for our other native species.. 😦

I hear you, Sue. I don’t do heat well either. The body requires extra rest in the heat. We have the white flies here so bad you almost want to wear a mask to walk outside. I’m sure I’m breathing them in. Not enough rain. I am so ready for winter. Have a good rest.

Amazing to read how many (including yourself) are affected by the lack of rainfall.
Have not given it much since all seems normal here (Florida) including the occasional tropical depression. Despite the difficulties, your garden looks super!

Beautiful Sue, your hard work has paid off! We are so very hot here still and with Fall just three days away. I think we will begin to feel the whisper of Autumn around the end of October. My garden is thriving and so are the weeds as well ,, I was out there today pulling them. They have very strong roots this year and it took some real strength…probably will have sore arms tomorrow! Stay cool over there and congratulations on such a lovely garden and thanks for sharing it in your beautiful photos.<3

Your garden is wonderful, Sue, and no wonder you’re tired! I confess that the garden bug never bit me, only my Mom and sisters. I came into the world ten years after them, so maybe that’s the reason. 🙂 Anyway, I love flowers and how they look, and of course, freshly grown food. What’s funny though is a tomato plant seed from our neighbor’s house must have blown into our backyard because now we have a huge thriving tomato plant! My hubby just picked a few yesterday. 🙂 Anyway, keep on gardening. Hugs! ♥
