Progress ~ Grow your Own..With Recipes

After 4 days and 3 nights of constant rain and cool winds, the Sun is now shining and so I went to the allotment with my Camera to show you how things are progressing.

Its amazing what some rain can do and then some warm sun, how it brings things along.. You wouldn’t think how in a matter of 2 weeks how things alter and grow..  Below was the peas and potatoes two weeks ago.

Peas and potatoes 2

Now look at them… You can also see we have added French Beans and between the cloches are Courgettes, Also Runner Beans and sweet-corn.

Peas and Potatoes.

Potatoes Main crops

You can see my Hubby in the distance busy at work. I went into the allotments Sunday afternoon, and weeded out the Strawberry Beds and put straw around them to help protect the fruits from the soil when it rains so hard… Last year we didn’t have many fruits as these were only young plants that I had replanted from new shoots. But I was disappointed at how many had got spoiled with contact with the damp soil from all the rain.. So I hope the straw helps this year.

Strawberries in flower

I put straw around strawberry plants

I also want to show you the Blackberry bushes.. these have grown wild and rampant  between ours and and our neighbours allotments. We Both love these fruits and so although hubby cut them back as they swamped the wood shed last year.. You can see how much flower is already on them.. So a Good crop I think this Autumn ..

Blackberry Bushes coming into flower

Also this year I am going to collect the Elderberries from a tree which grows between our allotments on the other side.. I found a great Recipe for Elderberry Cordial Syrup .   This syrup is great for colds and flu and more Health Benefits of Elderberries can be found HERE

Elderflowers.. Ready for the Elderberries.

The tree is laden with flower at the moment, and you  could make Elderflower Wine with the flowers. My Aunt always made loads of it when I was a child and I have a memory of it still… Hubby used to do a lot of wine making at one time.. Parsnip Wine is good but the best wine he ever made was Rhubarb Wine and a Strawberry Wine. .. However if memory serves me well, and I asked Hubby it took a lot longer for the Rhubarb to clear.. around 2 yrs in demi jars.. But it was the very best of wine we ever tasted.. And that strawberry wine.. was brilliant too.

Now not everything in the allotments is weed free.. In fact there is a patch behind the shed that really needs tackling.. But even Nettles have their uses..

So here is our Nettle patch behind the shed.. Note how the Dock leaves grow among the nettles. And if crushed and rubbed on the sting of a nettle help relieve the pain of the sting… The reasons why are discussed Here I also read that bathing in Milk soothes too, but when walking in nature we seldom have access to milk straight away! So always look for the Dock Leaf!Nettle Patch.

I drink lots of Nettle Tea, so why not make your own? Here are several  different recipe’s made from nettles, The nutrition value is amazing in high concentrates of vitamins A, C, D, iron, potassium, manganese, and calcium.

Below is a recent slide show of how things are growing..

Enjoy your week.. And thank you for reading.. And Welcome to all my New subscribers.. I hope you enjoy browsing.

Blessings Sue

What a beautiful compliment you have paid us Dilip, I need to get over to your Farm site and see whats been happening there? For I am sure just as much love and care goes into your own planting… We are more fortunate with our climate in that we get enough, well more than enough rain, while you do battle with not enough rain.. as I am writing this next to one of my favorite works of art you paint ( The Iris, I love it 🙂 ) I smile double as I walked through the Elderberry( and under it I should say)
I added my to do list a recipe, and POOF! you have supplied it for me (Thank you!)
Their fragrance filled the night air last night and it mingled with the Gardenias Ahhh heavenly, it was a perfect clear night, full of stars and a very bright
half full-Moon…clear thoughts seem to arise from that…
Your garden is incredibly productive, filled with your magick, as I wandered through your words and images one feeds their soul as well as their senses….not to mention the smiles
I love your strawberry patch, this year I was thinking about a truck tire( large one)
to put my garden in, My friend Dell, uses them, and she has the best strawberries, and yes she uses straw too…she said the rubber hold the coolness of the water within the roots so they produce better larger strawberries and it keeps them up
off the soil from roly-poly bugs and snails (and mud from the rains)
Your garden it so beautiful Sue….I enjoyed wandering with you this morning…
I will check out your links you always so graciously provide…
Thank you Sue…( I am enjoying your story)
Hope you have a wonderful day!

Dear Maryrose I was just thinking on you… and feeling neglectful of you…. and here you are wandering among my strawberry patch.. Love it when that happens… I am just about to close the PC for the day as I head off for a long shift at work to return in the morning.. I am pleased you are enjoying reading.. And yes a tire is good for strawberries, I used to do that when I had no garden… in fact we turned tyres inside out to make planter tubs from the metal rim, ever done that? So they stand up off the ground!.. It takes some doing with strength.. but we painted them and you would have never guessed they were tyres..
The Iris flower painting I donated to the sleep room where I work… along with a couple of other Nature paintings to brighten it up. I will be sure to say hello to it 🙂 …
I will catch you up very soon my wonderful sister.. Much love and thank you for you lovely compliment..

Looking good DW….Impressed!! And so weed free!!! You must weed continually. I was out yesterday weeding. With all the rain we’ve gotten they grow so fast 😦 I see tiny green tomatoes coming forth finally and the lettuce and spinach are doing great! Good salads. Trying goose berries this year. I need to look up what to do with them. Had to replant beans yesterday as well cause the rain must have rotted things out….It is always a challenge but one I love….Can’t imagine not growing my own food…Thanks for sharing. Hope your day is wonderful. Blessings…VK xxoo

The secret VK is hubby spends at least two hours daily on the allotment hoeing,.. if you just keep hoeing the little shoots as they start forming it prevents them from growing into bigger weeds.. So no back breaking work, except for when you are thinning out rows of crops such as beets or parsnips .. or in between the onions etc…

There is lots you can do with Gooseberries and you will find lots of recipes on the net VK.. Our spinach didnt do so good it went to seed even before we planted out, so have had to reset seed.. Don’t know why that happened?.. But the tomatoes have flower on now, and we are growing Butternut Squash for the first time this year, so we will see how that goes..
Me either, I can not envisage not growing our food… The price of fresh veggies in the shops has shot up so much, Its good to have a fresh supply of veggies..
Hope you have a great weekend too VK… take care.. Lots of love…DW xxxx

Yes Duma, Life just keeps on keeping on, regardless of what we through at Nature.. It will always strive to grow and do the best it knows how.. It never gives up.. Even in the most sparse of places you will find a seed trying to grow, Yes usually a weed.. But what is a weed? but a label we have given it for something that is numerous in number which thrives where we do not wish it to thrive… 🙂
You should try some nettle tea.. its not as revolting as many think 🙂 😉

Arrh thank you Eric that is so so kind of you to say so.. Yes we are ALL of us Blessed if we look for the simple gifts each of us have.. I have so many precious gifts, that so many take for granted.. The Gift of Sight! that I may see colours, the Gift of hearing, that I can hear the bird song, The gift of touch that I can feel the grass between my toes, the gift of smell that I may smell the new mown grass .. These precious gifts we all have… Once we really start to appreciate our gifts, and be thankful for the small things we then appreciate even more the grander things of life.. Such as being able to grow your own food, and enjoy the freedom of movement in a peaceful nation… With food in our stomachs and a roof over our heads.. So many in the world have not the same privileges as we have..
If more would share their Love in the Hearts Eric.. OH what much better gifts we could then share! 🙂

I really enjoyed your visit… Many thanks for adding your wisdom..

What a wonderful garden!!! So many healthy veggies and herbs too! I think I need to drink some Nettle tea, for sure. I have heard that rubbing them on arthritic pain helps. And about that, do you mean bathing in actual milk? Or Milk Thistle?

I hope so much that we will find a place next year with a piece of gardening land. We are sticking to flowers and yesterday came the prettiest little butterfly. We do have access to farm goods this year, which has been good. My son’s friend works at a farm and each week shares her part with us. She’s very sweet.

Thanks for visiting me, and bringing me to your sanctuary too. Sue, you are such a kind good friend to me. I am grateful.

Take good care, and I wish your garden much success! I hope the straw helps the berries stay drier. The plants are all beautiful!

    Love, your friend,

Oh, Sue, it is truly my pleasure when I make it to your sanctuary. I mean that. I can and have always felt the peace and light here, so thank you.

Nettles are great. They have been the topic of several random conversations I’ve had recently, so perhaps I need to get some.

Nettles are also a food plant for a special butterfly, but I’ll have to read my book to remember which one(s). Ironically, when I first learned about making gardens to attract butterflies using nectar producing flowers and larval food plants, I learned too that each plant was also a great medicine for people, and almost every plant that our local butterflies like and need most, were the exact medicine I needed. I’m pretty sure that still stands.

Isn’t it awesome how nature and energy work? Somehow, I’m not sure I’m dealing with energy well. I know things, but putting the knowledge into practice is a whole different ballgame.

Thank you for offering recipes here. I hope to try Nettle tea.
    Hugs and Love,
    Michelle.

What a great link, Sue! Thank you 🙂

I saw that several special butterflies depend on Nettles for larval food. The Brush-footed butterflies, such as the beautiful Red Admiral, which I’m pretty sure I was trying to attract and is how I learned about Nettles. The Comma butterfly also likes them.

Well, Ruthie Mae is telling me to go outside before it’s too hot. I hope to return soon, and tell you if I managed to find some Nettle tea 🙂

    Hugs and Love,
    Michelle.

Sue, boy has your allotment filled out. 😉 We have been having quite a bit of rain here and I am always amazed by how quickly the plants grow after a good soaking and cooler temperatures.

I have never had nettle tea but seeing all its benefits I will have to give it a try. Thanks for the recipe.

Your garden looks amazing. Do you know of any effective methods of attracting ladybugs? I have a few ladybugs in our garden, but I think the taterbugs outnumber them. I know ladybugs will eat them, but I’ve been using Sevin dust to kill off the taterbugs since I don’t have enough ladybugs to pose a threat. I would rather use natural means of pest control if I can.

I had to look up your Tatabugs.. Potato Bugs.. We know it as the Colorado Potato Beetle.. a Method for killing them without using pesticides is here http://www.sheknows.com/home-and-gardening/articles/997797/colorado-potato-beetles..
We’ve Marigolds keep away certain insects away as they do not like its odour.. Then we have planted Lupins these do attract black-fly but they go to the flowers rather than the veggies… We plant the marigolds in between Cabbages in tubs..
Lady bugs love to eat aphids Green fly.. etc so make sure you leave some green fly where Ladybugs lay eggs for food supply for their young, this then helps them prosper.. Also a good tip is to leave a bug home so Ladybugs can live in winter in it etc.. I had a browse of net and found these answers as to how to attract Ladybugs Marcus..

Its beautiful and a pleasure to walk through your allotment Sue.
More so for me as it brings back many memorys of times I had gardens, and remember the joy of gardening, and seeing the earth come alive with my efforts.
You and the eart have a very intimate relationship Sue.

Each of us, carries within us the capacity to change the world in small ways for better or worse. Everything we do and think affects the people in our lives, and their reactions in turn affect others As the effect of a seemingly insignificant word passes from person to person, its impact grows and can become a source of great joy, inspiration, anxiety, or pain. Your thoughts and actions are like stones dropped into still waters, causing ripples to spread and expand as they move outward.. I hope that I can send a few ripples out via the web of life, as we each of us weave the threads together... Welcome to my Sanctuary of Peace and Love... May we each spread our Lights around our World....Sue Dreamwalker
