Linda over at Litebeing Chronicles presented her followers with a Blog challenge, Present Your Gifts Asking these questions about what we have learnt over this past year in 2014.
- Which lessons did you learn?
- How did you serve others?
- What blessings did you receive?
- Was there something you lost that turned out to be a blessing in disguise?
Did you receive any “gifts” in terms of powers or skills?
One thing Linda states on her post is how fast 2014 has speeded along.. None more so for me since the Beginning of September.. Since I decided to take early retirement finishing work at the end of August these past months have seemed just like weeks.. So as I look back over 2014..
- Which Lessons did I learn? Well I learnt all over again how to slow down, and trust in the Universe. Sometimes our heads get in the way of our hearts and for a long while leading up to my decision to finish work my gut had told me ‘Its Time’.. Sometimes all we need do is Listen to our inner voice and follow our intuition.
- How did I serve others? Maybe this question is best asked of others!.. I always try to treat others as I wish to be treated. Maybe if we each of us did this the world would be a much better place..
- What Blessings did I receive? Each day I receive blessings.. Sometimes we forget the blessings we already have. I am blessed to just be able to ‘see’. In Sept I had an eye test for new glasses, it took 3 attempts and three pair of glasses were returned because the lenses were not correct. This one little thing brought home to me more than ever How precious our eyesight is.. And what wonders we see every day, a blessing we take for granted.. Our senses and our ability to walk, talk, hear and touch are blessings to cherish.
- Did I loose something that turned out to be a blessing? Now I had to think on this one.. If I had answered this question a week ago maybe my answer would have been different.. But Last Thursday I went visiting relatives some miles away and we called to have a meal in one of the local pubs.
Now is the time when the Christmas Meals are on the menu ,when work colleagues get together etc.. We chose a quiet table and next to ours was a laid out table for 12.. We had nearly finished our meal when a group of adults with learning difficulties came in with their 4 carers.. My eyes filled up with tears as I saw how excited they all were, and it brought back so many fond memories of the times I had taken out those whom I supported with learning difficulties for meals and especially at Christmas time..
One carer said “ that is your peace shattered now” I said no it was lovely to see them all enjoying themselves.. As I was leaving I spoke to one of the young men who had Downs Syndrome , they were still awaiting their meal to arrive.. I said “ I bet you have been looking forward to this meal” He smiled and clapped his hands in glee and said “ Yes”, he was “Very excited”… Yes I lost something when I gave up supporting these wonderful people.. But I gained so so Soooooooooo much more from knowing their beautiful souls….. And I count my Blessings Every day!.
- Did I receive any gifts in terms of Power and skills? Again the thinking cap was on.. What do we term as Power and what do we term as skill.?.
Each and everyone of us has a ‘Power’ so strong we use it every day and yet we fail to see how Powerful it is.. We have this incredible tool call ‘Mind’. Yet many fail to see how Powerful a tool it is.. IF only we used this tool more wisely, and realised what we Think we create.. May we all of us use our God given Power wisely as we take responsibility for our thoughts, which lead to our Actions.
Skills.. We each possess. Some of you here on WP have praised my skills as a poet, and praised my crafting and artistic skills, I thank you.. Yet I say we all of us hold skills. We each of us have talents, whether they be to Listen, to laugh and create humour. It maybe we have baking skills, or photographic skills, writing skills .. It matters not, what skills we have.. What matters is that we should all of us be prepared to share our skills. And the best way we share is through Communicating with one another… Which brings us back to Community!.. We need to once again become a Community in which we learn again how to share and CARE! that which is needed.
We need now more than ever to communicate to each other the need to share… Share our Love for one another, Share Kindness.. Share in Compassion.. Share our Hearts. Only when we learn to let go of our differences, our prejudices and our Judgements, Anger and hatred, when we do that, we then create Harmony and Love. What goes around comes around.. As we cast our pebbles of thoughts into the Pond.. We are the ones who create the ripples we see around us..
“Life teachers is the greatest lessons
And gives us the best gifts.
We may not have control over all the tests,
But you can either let the lesson devour or empower you”
May each Lesson you Learn Empower your Spirit
Anyone wishing to take Part please let Linda know Here where you can find more vacant dates.
Love and Blessings

Yes you’re right of course. It is the little things that ‘give’ the most joy – much more so than presents, however much they cost. I think we all want to help each other but sometimes don’t know how to get started or where to go to help. Enjoy your retirement Sue and have a blessed Christmas.

Hey Sue,
This offers a wonderful response to Linda’s challenge and expresses your obvious kindness, tenderness and warmth in gentle sentiments that reflect back a little on the past year. The charming anecdote recalling your restaurant visit becomes a poignant reminder of what true happiness and compassion is really all about. I get the firm impression that retiring from such a worthwhile and person-centred profession has left you with many wonderful memories of a career helping to positively change lives. No doubt you will miss many aspects of giving service to others for their personal betterment, and yet I imagine you will respond with equal enthusiasm and care to retirement and enjoy the many opportunities to embrace new activities and interests…and perhaps to learn new skills as well…digital photography for example 🙂 And, I will of course look forward to viewing more wonderful paintings, artwork, and craft work now that you have time to enjoy longer spells in the painting room.
As always Sue, you offer a charming post that belies it’s larger message and significance. Thank you for wise and caring words 🙂
Namaste

Dewin, Thank you for this wonderful response.. And also thank you for your other responses to your own posts, I still am working my way down them to answer them. 🙂 Yes It was a hard adjustment.. I made the transition from Learning Difficulties after working 7 years with a wonderful group of idividuals into mental health support work.. which I did for the last 4 yrs.. It was another eye opener into the skills we have and into mental health issues and training.. The situation of my working environment in Lone working became very volatile and dangerous on more than one occasion for my own health and safety..So I let my gut instincts take over and made the decision to retire early .. The first month was the worst I think.. But now there are not enough hours in the day for all the things I wish to do 🙂 .. And who knows Dewin.. Yes maybe one day I may get a programme on my computer which helps me create digital photo’s Never say never is my motto..
Many thanks for taking the time to read and comment.. Your visit is very much appreciated..

How touching your anecdote about the pub visit was Sue. And how unfortunate it is that carers in such situations can at times almost feel obliged to make excuses for their charges. There was a story in the national news only a few weeks ago about a group of four who had learning difficulties visiting a well known restaurant chain. The two carers were advised that their group could only be seated well away from the rest of the diners for fear that discomfort and embarrassment would be caused by the group’s presence. It was a shameful episode, though thankfully the publicity has done some good – and caused that chain the loss of much revenue!

Thank you Hariod.. Yes it is sad is it not that people still hold such views when they come up against something not so perfect in their world.. I know when I was a support worker I came across such prejudice often from the public and once a place we went to have a meal.. However a letter from our manager about equal rights put that straight.. Most of it is ignorance.. And the lack of empathy.. Many thanks for your informative comment Hariod… Lets hope awareness grows as we learn we are all one, not greater or lesser.. ❤

Lovely post and reminders to share our gifts Sue. This is the second nudge to reflect on the year for gifts and lessons, so I will be doing that soon.
Meanwhile, I’m not really sure of my gifts, but believing it has to do with heart communication. Truthfully, sometimes writing is tedious for me.
blessings shared…. 🙂

Thank you for participating and all you do for myself and others.

This post is SO up my alley at the moment. I have only just (at 11pm the night before last precisely) finished off making my eldest daughter’s Christmas gift. Completely unique, customised from a plethora of tutorials online and hopefully, a one of a kind thing that she is going to love. Hours and hours of work (days and days!) have gone into this gift and I have honed and perfected it till it shines with both love and possibility. I learned SO much in the process of making this gift. I had to learn so many skills but the most important thing that I learned was never give up. Even if you don’t think you can do something, you usually can if you try a bit harder. I am pretty chuffed with the results and hopefully she loves it. Gift giving, when you have made the gift yourself is part and parcel of rediscovering that Christmas feeling all over again. When we are adults we tend to lose it but when we fully invest ourselves in a home-made, homespun Christmas, we can rediscover that amazing feeling of giving something that has taken us time and thought to produce. I also learned to actually think about the person I was giving this gift to. What did SHE like, not just a gift voucher etc. We have become lazy gift givers and have played into middle mens hands when we gift cash or vouchers “to get what you want”. There isn’t any thought involved and we may as well not bother. That’s what got our family thinking that we would each get a family member and would make something amazing and most pertinent to that person. I can’t wait for the day we get to gift our homemade gifts. Steve’s homemade gift for our youngest daughter is amazing. I want it! 🙂

You have only wetted my appetite all the more now Narf for the 17th when We get to see these magnificent gifts.. I know your daughters will be over the Moon with your thoughtfulnes and skills… And Yes Now I have more time on my hands for crafts I think more handmade items will be on the Christmas List of Giving for next year in the Dreamwalker’s Household..
I always remembered my childhood Christmas’s and one of my Grans would always knit us something.. I loved her knits.. 🙂
Yet there are still those around who do not appreciate ‘Home made’ because it hasn’t got a label on it or a hefty price tag…. And they look down their noses.. Thankfully not in my own family.. But they are in abundance as the commercial world has tweaked their brains into $ £ signs..
Hugs to you and Many thanks for your most welcome visit.. and wonderful comment.. ❤

Sue, I am fortunate to have good jeans.
Many people have the same blessings but abuse them.
With my blog I try to be a good roll-model.
We should not add sugar and salt and eat fatty food.
A mostly vegetarian diet balanced against the amount of exercise done.
Drink plenty of water and try to keep the stress levels down.
Rest is more important than sleep so if we cannot sleep breath deep and relax you will then sleep if you need to.
Thank you for letting me know I am a help to you.
As you are a roll-model in your garden, art and handy crafts.
With your blog you contribute to spreading peace and kindness.
My effort is insignificant in comparison. _/\_

Hello Sue. Indeed the five questions themselves make us introspect to find answers. Yes we will need to do some soul searching and even the process itself will prepare us to take on 2015 with a deeper sense of purpose and awareness. Thank you so much for this timely spiritual exercise.
With kindest regards and a happy December.

A very lovely and thoughtful post Sue. I also worked with people with intellectual disabilities, for 9 years and they are special people who (many of them ) as adults still see life through the lens of a child and I learned from them how we more able adults with better reasoning (?) complicate our lives so much! We have more stressors maybe but I knew one couple who married, lived together supported by community workers, and they just simply loved each other. I see them sometimes still all these years later, one time up dancing at an outdoor concert in the park when no-one else was, how happily uninhibited!

Isn’t life strange how our lives have in some ways mirrored each other in some ways 🙂 then again maybe not Wendy… For we also supported a couple who both had learning difficulties and through our support we helped them prepare a Church Wedding, and they both had support in a bungalow..Its wonderful to see how they view the world… And yes oh that we could stop worrying what others thought about us and be so spontaneous and just dance .. for the Fun of it.. 🙂

I love the questions. I am going to add them to my working journal and see where they lead me. What i have learnt this year is this – ‘The point of this life is bigger, deeper, wider than any human understanding, but one day we will come to know all things. Sometimes we just have to put a question out there in the universe and wait for the answer to echo back at us.’ xxx

“How did I serve others? Maybe this question is best asked of others!.”
If asked of me, I would say,
“Sue, who lives an ocean away, is better at checking in on me than my next door neighbors. She notices if I’ve gone quiet for far too long. Her caring and attention make me feel loved and cared for at times when I wonder just exactly what purpose I serve here! She makes a huge difference in my life, just by being herself. Thanks Sue – though I would never presume to ask someone to ‘serve me’ you certainly do give me so much. It’s much appreciated!” xoxox Tamrah Jo

So true, the part of “skills” is so tricky. Skills tend to overpower the ego and be deceiving, no matter how good they may be…They can trick us to think we are in control to manipulate others. Yet skills can be taken as tools that soothe the soul and become therapeutic spiritually, which is how I like to handle them. Thanks for such thought provoking comments.

This is what makes them so endearing..
