The Buddhists say there are 8 winds,
There are Gain and Loss,
Praise and Ridicule
Credit and Blame,
and
Suffering and Joy.
If you aren’t aware of them they will blow you away like dry leaves in an Autumn Breeze
For example, When someone praises you, and that tastes sweet like Candy in your mouth you are blown away by the Winds of Praise.
~~~~~~~
One Day in ancient China a young man thought he had become enlightened.
He wrote a Poem to his Master about how he was not blown away by the 8 winds.
Then he sent it to his Master who lived three hundred miles up the Yangtze River
When his Master read the Poem he wrote
“ Fart, Fart”
On the bottom of the poem and sent it back.
When the young man received his Masters reply and the more he read his reply the more he got upset.
At last he decided to visit his Master.
In those days, a three-hundred-mile trip up the Yangtze River was a very difficult journey
As soon as he arrived, he went straight to his Master’s temple,
“ Why did you write this?” he asked bowing.
“ Doesn’t the poem show that I am no longer blown about by the 8 winds?”
“ You say that you are no longer blown by the eight winds” replied the Master.
“But two little Farts blew you all the way up here”..
I couldn’t resist this little story to make you think about the small things in life that often get us huffing and puffing.
It puts our lives in perspective when you see the Bigger Picture of what many are facing in our world today..
What really needs to change?
And which way are you making the Wind blow?
lol 🙂 great story and very true words. Humanity has such a powerful ego it takes great work to quiet it. We may never succeed in this life time completely. That is the true power of it. It is something we all need to stay aware of at all times and just try our very best. Blessings and thanks…Love to you….VK 🙂
A brilliant story demonstrating the power and blindness of self-delusion; though also pointing to those necessary moments of humbling that we inevitably encounter in any progressive and sustained movement towards understanding.
Sue, there’s also a certain synchronicity going on here as the parable that Wayne Dyer relates in your video share is also the subject of an ‘illuminating’ 😉 discussion I am involved in on another site.
With much gratitude and respect.
I know about synchronicity being a powerful tool.. I just came from Dreamry and her post held a section about Keys the subject of that in this video.. I do not know if this is what your refer to?… As I didnt check other comments.. as I caught up with Amanda’s post backwards as is my thing LOL.. So we are being shown just how our energies are connecting with one another..
Many thanks again for your wonderful response 🙂
I read all your comments and I see from which way you are all singing from.. To me the ‘Key’ s we have lost are within our self awareness… We have lost the ability to look within ourselves and be detached.. We have lost our ability to love ourselves and others unconditionally.. We constantly search outside of ourselves, Hence the street light outside for the things we need..
We never really lost anything at all.. for its all within.. We but have to dig deep to bring it from within.. And once we learn to love,, Truly love ourselves and others we unlock those internal keys we lost..
We search for external ‘Things’ in life to enrich us.. be it relationships, jobs possessions we crave these things thinking they will enrich our lives.. And we forget if we are not happy within our selves no amount of external trappings will open our inner doors to happiness.
I thank you greatly for your response Sue. Whilst the discussion at Amanda’s was interesting, I’m not sure how much light was thrown by each of us to be frank. Michael seemed to partly grasp my own take for example, but I can’t be at all sure, and it really doesn’t matter of course. It is all just a sharing of perspective, given through the prism of mind and falling as lighter or darker shades of wording.
My own path mostly comprised one of so-called ‘dry insight’ in the orthodox Buddhist tradition; and of course, that is very different to any path which approaches ‘Truth’ via symbol and metaphor. So it has been fascinating for me to glimpse into the rather more exotic thought-streams that constitute such other paths.
When you say ‘We never really lost anything at all. . . for it’s all within.’ then this was indeed part of my own take on the parable/fairy tale. I spent most of my adult life in a seeking [via orthodox Buddhism] which sought to acquire a knowledge [Nibbana] before I realised that this really wasn’t about a subject/object relationship, not at all, it wasn’t about ‘me’ as a subject, ‘acquiring’ Nibbana.
Many thanks for detailing your further observations and thoughts here Sue, I will greatly enjoy learning more as to your thinking in due course, and certainly look forward to exploring our new-found connection with your blessing and assent.
With metta.
Hariod and Sue,
Wow! This is so awesome!! I am just seeing this now! It is always amazing to be in synchronicity with Sue as I admire her deep intuitive nature, kindness, humility and profound understanding.
“Keys” are such powerful symbols and it is fascinating to me to see how they can provide endless analogies in regards to the workings of the Inner Life. When I first started studying Jungian psychology after coming from a deeply meditative background, I was convinced all the symbol stuff was just an intellectual distraction from meditating and connecting with the Now. But the more I follow my dreams, and see recurring symbols happening again and again, the more interested I find myself in the subject. Either way, it’s really fun! …and such a pleasure to connect with other people as we honor ancient stories, like the “passing wind” story! LoL
Also, Hariod I did find it adorable that you called the symbol path “exotic” …!!
Sue, you said:
” We have lost the ability to look within ourselves and be detached.. We have lost our ability to love ourselves and others unconditionally.. We constantly search outside of ourselves,”
I couldn’t agree with you more and feel deeply honored to share this moment of synchronicity with you. Here’s to honestly looking within and staying humble!! xoxoxoxo
I had a more cynical reason of thought why his Master said Fart Fart to his enlightenment …LOLs
I like this post…as you know where my mind? sits with on those winds…I have been rearranging my directions of winds these days….I have not accomplished total peace, but I am so close I can taste it or perhaps I here it?
I am not sure if I will ever be enlightened in this journey….though if bruises and breaks are the stones in the path, I think we both will be there one day…
Thank you for the story and the video….both are taken to heart…
leaving behinds patterns of deception
lessons learned
through the fires that burn
now fire heals
as waters run still
Sue, this post makes me think of figures such as Ann Frank and Viktor Frankl, who underwent the most catastrophic situations ever imaginable (think of Ann Frank who died when she was 15), and were able to find beauty and meaning while living under the most deplorable conditions, both physically and psychologically… The video you posted also points out a very interesting situation: one tends to move to a “comfort zone” when one is in trouble: the path with light. Very interesting indeed… Buddhists refer to this zone as “delusion”. The “comfort zone” will not necessarily solve your problems, on the contrary, it will multiply them. One has to learn their way in the “dark”, within the “soul”, within “oneself”, otherwise, what’s out there are delusions which multiply bad karma and may actually make one more blind.
This is why it may be critical to develop “mindfulness” to its full extent. Without “mindfulness”, events follow one another, and may not have any meaning in our lives. With “mindfulness”, I am able to distinguish what is actual genuine within myself, from what is actually a “delusion”. For example, the most typical delusion is that of money and belongings. Do I really need to spend $100 when shopping for groceries, when with $50 or $60, I can satisfy my hunger? This is the typical delusion, what’s more for a belly that’s full?? This is society…And what it teaches you to believe…That SOMETHING is actually never good enough. Hence the negative thoughts…and the world of delusion.
However we see them or feel them in whatever symbolic or metaphorical form the winds can blow us around and the question is, ‘do we go with the flow or do we go against the flow?’ Remembering that a little breeze as small as a fart can move us if we let it!
As you say Sue all we need is within and Wayne’s video is a classic metaphor and even though we humans need those anthropomorphic images to get our messages across what most of us fail to remember is that when looking for something within there is an inner light to allow us to use our inherent wisdom to find whatever we need.
Why do we hide our lights under a bushel or in a clay pot? Love, David
I did not completely understand the story, but it is about being centered in yourself and finding peace and love from inside instead of outside, right? I think I am quite good at that 🙂 But I do like when people are nice to me, and I don’t like when people are mean, and in does effect me, but I have discovered that the meanness or the niceness does not have to be targeted or intended for me in order to effect me. I mean, if I am in a room where people are mean to someone or to each other I feel just as upset as when someone is being mean to me, the same thing when people are nice. So I think what disturbs me is how people can be so mean, I just don’t understand that, why would someone want to hurt other people intentionally?
That makes me sad to think about. So I think it is not exactly that I feel sad because I am hurt by mean words, because I know myself and I don’t believe such words, I know I am a good person, but I am sad that they can find it in their hearts to say such mean words, I am sad because they are so far away from their souls, and have become so hardened that they don’t care if they are mean. So even though I don’t let people make me feel bad about myself, even though I am very centered in my soul, and live from that divine lovely place, mean behaviour and negative people and selfishness and aggression still makes me very sad.
Yes Line, it shows that even though the pupil thought he had mastered the Eight winds ( principles ) he still allowed a small expletive comment to get to him, so much so he travelled the 300 miles to show his master he had overcome the eight winds.. Yet his master told him otherwise, as the two little words had still managed to ruffle his feathers!.. 🙂
Being empathic as you are line often means we feel emotions which others give out.. learning to not feed into them is difficult .. When we learn to send out our compassion and feel love for these people who send out anger and hatred and delight in causing hurt to another.. Then we have reached a place where our emotions are then only helping create love in the world..
When our emotions react in the same vibration of hate or anger at another actions, then we are only adding that same vibration back into the world..
The human race has a long way to go before we can embrace each other in unconditional love .. But many are making great strides to live from their hearts.
You dear Line are a wonderful example of a soul whose gentleness and compassion coupled with love is helping heal the world.. 🙂 And I am so grateful to have met you and have you within my blogging world Line.. 🙂
Thank you most kindly for your wonderful response 🙂
