Festival of Beltane

A water-colour of Spring I painted

I remember clearly back in my junior school years the May Day celebrations. The First day of May was made more special because this was the day I started out on my Earth Journey this time around.

Learning to dance around the Maypole was part of our village school tradition.. We would learn the various dances, weaving in and out to plat the brightly coloured ribbons in spiders webs and close weave patterns .Girl and Boy alternatively skipping around in and over each other to the lively Maypole music.

This is the beautiful Village I still call home even though I now no longer live there

The May Queen represents the ‘Maiden’ aspect the Feminine, beauty and youth. Living as I do now in Robin Hood country. One of the best known maids is Maid Marian. which could be denoted as manifestation of the Maiden Goddess of the Greenwood..  I am also reminded of the Green Man. and all he represents.

The Maypole is the symbol of returning life connecting to living matter of Earth, the colourful ribbons and dances which weave in a spiral represent the eternal spirals of energy which come from the Sun..As we danced around the pole we would then unwind reversing the dance symbolising the returning of energy to the Universe in a never ending cycle or loop.. Of course back then as children we had no idea of its origins we just danced and enjoyed the lively music  and had no concept of its Pagan history.

Once upon a time Maypoles stood upon most village greens but the Roundheads and Reformation put a stop to anything that bore a mark of Paganism or Popery.

I wasn’t until Charles II that the Maypole was reinstated and the tradition was taken up again on village greens..

May Day is the Ancient festival of Beltane. Beltane was the start of Summer and on the eve of May 1st Bonfires would be lit to herald in the return of fertility to the land. Fires meaning Life and Transformation,

One tradition was that young men and women would leap over the flames of the fires to get husbands and wives. Married women would leap to help them be more fertile and conceive and those who just wanted good luck would also jump.

It was also the practice to drive cattle between two bonfires which was to help ensure a good milk yield ..In our present day lots of our traditions are being lost and we have lost much respect for Nature. In our village as children the community spirit held us all together we knew each other and would go out of our way to help a neighbour . A post I did previously  on this subject can be found here.

Many have lost touch with Nature, forgetting names of wild flowers and herbs, and natural healing properties that natures larder holds.

Those ancient rituals not only served to honour the gifts Nature freely offered, but they also served in lifting the community up to a higher level of consciousness.Bringing Unity and Oneness as they each pulled together helping one another.

The rites of passage are honoured throughout many cultures and our Ancient indigenous brothers and sisters knew that to honour our Earth Mother by living in balance within her seasons also meant that there would be a better chance for all to succeed and prosper. Some thing I think many have forgotten how to do today..  For many see Nature without a soul as science seems to be meddling within its boundaries which are having a knock on effect to how Nature itself is now reacting..

We are witnessing more storms, more unseasonal weather patterns, and I just hope that we wake up soon to the damage we are doing to our beloved Mother that has held us in her eternal arms for so long..We forget the power nature holds until we are faced with her floods, winds and storms.

Wishing you all a Happy Month of May

Blessings

 Sue

Losing touch with nature isn’t neglect, Sue, but the side effects of medicines taken over time usually described as the ‘cocktail effect’!. It just can’t be helped, the alternative being quite unacceptable! 🙂

Yes so many people ‘Depressed’ into that cocktail of searching for the things to fill their lives with happiness… So many seeking it in material wealth.. Instead the treasures have surrounded us all along.. We have but to walk out and breathe in Natures gifts.. Thank you Svein.. Much love your way my good friend 🙂

I went to college at Bryn Mawr College, which had many traditions based on early beliefs. One was a May Day celebration, maypole and all. We didn’t know of the above traditions, but the first President of the college was quoted to say that “Only our failures marry!”

As we celebrated the Dressing of the wells in July. Which as children we all helped create.. Many thanks and I hope to catch up with everyone some time today.. 🙂

Happy Beltane and happy Solar Return Sue! I learned so much from this post about May Day. How cool to live in Robin Hood country. Do you watch Game of Thrones? i would imagine the show would remind you of that time period or the time of King Arthur.

Enjoy May’s embrace and the time of your birth ❤

:-)Thank you Linda.. I had a wonderful B’day my friend.. and enjoyed a long weekend of being with family and friends.. The Game of Thrones I have heard of, but never watched.. a little too dramatic from the clips I have seen advertised.. And yes King Arthur and his Knights would indeed echo this drama.. And Robin Hood in the time of outlaws and much bloodshed.. Nothing has much changed through the centuries really..
We have now exchanged swords for guns.. and arrows for bombs.. We still have much to learn as a species in this Game of Thrones as each head of nation does battle with another to show supremacy and control..
While still the villages and towns get pillaged and raped.. And the innocent get caught in the battles of leaders who wage war for their own ends.. Sad really.. When you delve into the deep of our Human selves..

So today I have an hours acupuncture .. Then more catching up here to do today.. 🙂 And Thank you again Linda I really did enjoy the embrace of MAY.. She gifted me so many flowers I will have to take a photo of them all and share..
      Big Smiles my friend..
I hope you are well.. Will be catching up later with you..
      Much LOVE.. ❤

This brings back wonderful memories Sue. Such beautiful art and videos. As a child we celebrated May Day the same way. The maypole and music . That is a thing of the past now. We so looked forward to May Day. Thank you for this lovely post. Your art is beautiful. Just today someone asked me online what God must think of what’s happening with the terrible weather events. It turns he is very religious and doesn’t believe in climate change. We are ignoring the harm we are doing to Mothet Earth .

Thanks for all the backstory on your village, Maypole & Beltane celebrations Sue. I agree that we’ve lost too much of our ancient wisdom and connection with mother earth, especially in the US where we wiped out the Native Americans and started new. Newness, freedom, and technology can only get us so far. We still need nature, other people, and cooperation.

I agree Brad.. The Native Americans were portrayed as the enemies.. when we know different.. And if you look through out every civilization around the word Brad the Indigenous peoples within their native homes have had their birthrights stolen from them .. From the Aborigine to those in the Amazon Rain Forests in Brazil.. To the Tibetans and Eskimos.. The true Romany Gypsies to, cast out.. These people are far more in tune with nature than we will ever be.. Maybe because their knowing takes them deeper to the truth of who we are.. For they have not forgotten their roots. And those who have stayed true to their roots, who have not been brainwashed and bruised by the modern day world know far more within, then ever we will with our technology and space travel gadgetry..
Many thanks Brad.. I hope to catch up later with your own posts.. As I have had a few days away from the world of Blog xxx 🙂

But when one understands the what next is needed before the happy ever after, one can stay calm.. 🙂 In our knowing each now are doing our bit as we do our own ‘Dancing’ and ‘Remembering’ as we bring our own separate ‘ribbons’ of thoughts to weave together around the centre of our ONEness.. 🙂 just like the Maypole.. we are all coming back to the centre of our BEing.. 🙂

Happy Birthday, Sue! I love Loreena McKennett’s music celebrating the ancient rites of Spring. Many thanks Sue for the history update, I guess we have all been there before if not in the past then in the remote past … some will have that recall and the rest still to remember. I have no regrets about the passage of time and the changes and challenges we enjoy right now for the past is gone the future is unknown and now is to live for which is why we call it the present. For me it is a Divine Gift and for that I live it in love. Love, David

Wonderfully expressed David… Agreed.. Nostalgia on my part of those traditions that are dying out.. Always good to look back in fondness, and look forward with expectancy .. But to always be grounded in the now of Intention, knowing what we do in the Now are the outcomes of our tomorrows.. So the gift of the present must be Lived as one would wish to receive . For as we know.. All things go back to the source.. 😉

And yes its a shame that these traditions are no longer being done and being lost.. But who knows.. As more and more wake up!.. Honoring our Earth Mother may well come back into ‘fashion’.. As we begin to see we have to work with nature and not against her..

Connecting our thoughts through our Earth Mother, we are being shown and guided back to such rituals in honouring these sacred rights of our ancestors we have long forgotten..
And I know we are awakening in our remembering Mar.. And Thank you.. You too enjoy my friend.. LOVE and Blessings your way my dear friend xxx

Hope you’ve had a good birthday, Sue.
And what interesting facts about the Maypole celebrations… I remember learning (badly) the dance in primary school, but never knew why we were doing it or what it meant. I’m going to have to look further into these ancient festivals, I’ve heard of a few but only really know their names. I’d love to know more.
    Happy May to you!

Haha… Yes the boys at our school I remember well never enjoyed the Maypole.. some thinking it too ‘sissified’ lol
The boys though would learn a sword dance.. Our head teacher was a good carpenter at our junior school, and made eight sword like sticks.. To which they dances and learned how to slot together to make a star.. that one would hold up aloft. And they danced a little like the Morris dancers do.. Some made sticks with beer bottle tops as shakers on them.. But back in those days pop bottle tops came like beer bottle tops so the race was on in school for a bottle top collection.. 🙂 And yes I agree Tom.. there are lots of forgotten traditions..
Many thanks for you May Day well wishes.. Tome 🙂 Happy May to you also xx

A really lovely and most informative article, dear Sue, for which many thanks. I must say, living down here in Glastonbury then there is no shortage of those still engaging in ancient ritual, and nature-based spiritual practices. I’m more conventionally Buddhistic, myself, but very much appreciate the eclectic nature of this region as regards its spiritual dispositions. Many pathways to the mountain top, as they say. With love and best wishes, Hariod. ❤

I have to say Hariod the older I have grown, the Eight Fold Pathway has spoken greatly to me.. Putting into perspective all the other pathways I have trodden to get to the road I now walk..
And Glastonbury is steeped in ancient rituals… Such a beautiful part of the world too.. Many thanks dear Hariod. And you are right.. There are no right roads to the top.. For each pathway is part of the journey we choose to explore the views and experience the lessons upon the way.. And all roads lead us home.. 🙂

Love and Many Blessings my good friend… ❤ xxx Sue

Happy Birthday, Sue. And what a lovely post! I remember doing the Maypole dance in elementary school, but didn’t know it’s rich tradition. We have lost our use of ritual because of so much fear. I would love to see more ritual brought back in respect for Nature and Mother Earth. Everything is so commercialized any more Thank you.

Hi Lorna.. Oh so many thanks for your Birthday Wishes.. I am not surprised you too remember the Maypole.. And agree about the Fear.. so many distortions and lies as to fear such rituals which are based on ancient knowledge.. The one thing I feel is happening is that awareness is now being generated back to our Earth Mother and more are waking up to the damage we have done and are doing.. Respecting Nature and her elements is something I hope more will wake up to.. And hopefully such traditions of honouring our Earth Mother will come back into being again.. ❤ xxx ❤

We truly have lost our inner connections with Mother Nature.

The Maypole dance video is beautiful…and so is your village. It’s a picturesque village, full of peace and simple happiness. I loved it… 🙂

Hi Dear Mani.. Yes its still a quite village.. But when we grew up we had to leave as there were no new homes being built and the prices of any that came up for sale were far to expensive for a first time buyer.. Sad that happens to most village life.. As people come in and snap up cottages for second homes to rent out as holiday cottages etc.. And so the prices go sky high..
Glad you enjoyed the painting too Man.. And yes Spring is truly here today.. The Sun is shining.. 🙂

Perhaps that is the story with most villages these days. Here also, quaint villages are giving way to luxuriously built cottages which are second home to rich city people. The villages are losing their natural charm…slowly but surely…

Sue, you grew up in such a beautiful area you would have had to drag me from there. The one thing missing here in the US is that feeling of history being such a young country in comparison to Europe.

I only saw the Maypole dance once. A traveling group came to town when I was very young and my grandparents took me to witness the customs of this group of people, wish I remembered more about the group of people but I do recall loving watching the dancers wind then unwind the ribbons.

We had our fire here Saturday night, couple of days early but it was when my family was here so that’s when we had to celebrate.

It really bothers me to see so many disconnected from nature. It’s that disconnect that leads to the uncaring of what happens to the earth. I’m currently reading The Nature Principle by Richard Louv (just started it) in which he makes his case that not only children but adults too are suffering ill effects from what he calls nature deficit disorder. I’m seeing a lot more writers addressing the problems we’ve created for ourselves and the planet because we have replaced time in nature for time with technology. Like you I do hope people wake up sooner, rather than later as I feel our time is running out.

Happy belated Birthday Sue and good to hear, that you were surrounded by family and friends 🙂
The private school, where I studied to be a teacher, does also celebrate May Day in Denmark, so some places are holding on to the traditions.
I agree, it would be wonderful, if we could learn to use our nature in a much more positive way again. We are offered so much and only need to pay back with love ❤

Oh Sue, I’m so late for May Day! What a week it’s been… Anyway I hope you had a wonderful day.
This is such a lovely post. I only remember one May Day celebration and May pole, and I was a very small child, and it wasn’t much of one either. But there wasn’t (still isn’t) acceptance even as an old tradition of that in small southern towns here. I’ve always wished to see a celebration like you describe. So I really enjoyed this. Mega May Day hugs.

Thank you Renee.. I am a great believer and I have my Dad to thank for this, is that we are capable of turning our hands to most things.. For he used to teach us there is no such word and ‘can’t’.. So I have tried my hand at most things.. But I do not take any one of them for granted.. And I know how privileged I am to hold such gifts.. So many thanks dear Renee.. I appreciate that huge compliment ❤ 💐

True the power of the big city speaks louder, and people do not want to but live close to nature, and this clearly denote in the forgetfulness of some natural herbs, unfortunately. 😀

Lovely post Sue. Thanks for sharing your home village too. Ickwell village, close to Cople has a May day festival every year on the village green. The day starts at daybreak with morris dancing at the May pole and bacon or egg roles. There is a procession later on and the crowning of the May Queen. It is a busy, lovely day and people come from far and wide because the festival is sadly one of a few remaining in villages in the UK. It is such a shame to see traditions fade away as our village communities change and commuters don’t often have the same community values or want to be part of a living history of village life. LolXxx

You come from such a beautiful village, Sue. Loved watching the children doing the Maypole dance. It is interesting to observe the deep meaning associated with the Maypole ritual dance. As you say that as a child when you participated in the Beltane Festival celebration, you simply enjoyed the dance but later in life when you uncovered the symbolism behind the ritual, you must have related strongly to it. Wish you a very happy month of May, Sue.:-) Love & Regards, Somali

It was, and it hasn’t changed much structurally just the people.. Once upon a time I would know Every adult and every child by name in the whole village.. But as people died those from out of town were the only ones with money who could afford the property prices.. That is why my hubby and I had to leave the village when we got married.. As we could not afford housing and there was nothing you could rent.. So we moved 35 miles away.. to the next county.. And I still remember going to the fish and chip shop and Eleanor who ran it, would give us a free bag of batter bits.. if we didn’t have enough pocket money for one of her famous fishcakes.. 🙂 xxx Happy Memories for sure.. So thank you again for your taking time to explore there 🙂
