The Elder~ The Pathfinder~ Part 1.

The story below is one which filled my thoughts as I painted the Elder Tree.. I will reveal the whole painting at the end of the series of these short stories. Parts of these paintings I revealed on this post. My thoughts may take up several posts.. I know how many do not like reading Long posts, but I know those who are meant to read, will read.. Thank you  ALL in advance.

Mole

Mole section/ Water Colour on 100% cotton 10 x 7 inches full painting

The Woman could no longer breathe in all the intoxicating poisons the world threw out. She became overwhelmed with the fumes of other people’s thoughts.  Her senses overloaded by the barrage of vibrations that poured forth in her daily world which over spilled into her dream-state.  Even the radio had hourly interruptions sending her mind into the dark corners she did not wish to visit, as yet more darkness crept into her sanctuary.

Walking was her usual relief, but the winter chill set her mind on another escape.

She slid the vinyl record from its sleeve and lifted the arm of the player into position as she gently lowered the needle into the groove… The familiar strains immediately soothed her aching mind. She let out a long low sigh.

She breathed in deep and deeper still. She closed her eyes for a moment as if in a ritual then she reached for the paint brush which she dipped into the clean water. The drawing which had emerged the night before as the clock she had glanced at had the unearthly hour of 03:33. Numbers which she was well used to seeing in triplicate. Their symbols yet another reminder that she was being guided and had some wise masters to help guide her along her pathway.

The night before she had drawn a tree. This was no ordinary tree, It was an Elder. And she had been drawn into its womb. She sat now with paint loaded upon her brush and as the paint spread into the paper, so too did her mind sink deeper and deeper.

She found herself sinking into her design, right into the Earth Mother where all seeds are sown and all knowledge is born.  And so, her painting took root.

It was as if the Elder came to life, the Elder’s aged wisdom speaking to her heart. She was told once again of the ‘Standing Ones’ the ancient Tree Tribes whose huge forests had covered the land.

The Ancient Elder took her down within the roots showing her how deep they twisted and reached out mirroring her canopy, as above, so below the Elder began.

Before long the woman saw the many worms wriggling as she painted the twisting roots, roots that twisted and held the fabric of the Earth Mother together. Some strong, some weak, but all part of the whole. Her brush began to paint something not in her drawing, but its shape was clear.. It was a Mole..

“Good”, said the Elder, “you see the Mole and the worms, and you see even though they need no light, how precious are these to our Mother, for they enrich the soil. Without the Worms the soil would be lifeless, but sand”. The Elder continued telling the woman what she already knew, but the woman listened intently as the Mole took shape.

She watched as in her mind she saw the many worms taking the Elders and all the Standing Ones fallen leaves pulling them underground.

The Elder explaining that nothing was ever lost, “As we shed our load, it prevents us from toppling over and breaking under the weight of storms. We Stand in unity together in every storm, learning to bend and bow our branches. Knowing that the elements can take down the most rigid and strongest among us. It’s the strength of our roots which keep us anchored and grounded” said the Elder

“ We shield one another, as we stand together in times of great storms. We know some of us may fall, but in our centre grows the strongest matriarch our Mother-Hub tree, she protects our young seedlings. So our tribe goes on, growing outward from its centre from its heart.”

The woman took in all that was said as she continued to paint and mix the colours upon her pallet. And as the Elder grew in statue upon her paper and took deeper form, so too did she see the many miracles which this wonderful old tree Elder had witnessed throughout time.

paints

The stories held her imagination as the Elder began once again to tell the story of Mole.. A story she had once read but barely remembered its detail. Yet now as she painted in detail the story rose before her in her mind.

“Now I will tell you about a time in the Very Beginning,” said the Elder. “ When your tribe lived in  a world of darkness, beneath the Earth. Your tribe knew of no other world and so knew nothing but darkness. Until one of you asked if there was more to the world in which you lived. Mole was revered for his skills in tunneling and so a man asked Mole if there were something other than the world they lived.”   The woman continued cleaning her brush in the water, choosing another colour as the Elders trunk grew up from the roots as other images formed in her mind that had now embedded themselves within the trunk.

“ Your tribe had never seen the light of day, but they knew Mole went close to the surface for it was Mole who allowed the air they all breathed into their underground world.. Air that we Standing Ones breathe out and create, so that you Humans can breathe it in”.. The woman listened intently to what was to come next.

“ Mole told the people beneath the Earth to follow him, asking them to form a line right behind him. And as he dug his tunnel, he passed back the earth and rocks to the Human, who in turn passed it back and so on. Thus they all moved through the tunnel putting the debris behind them.  At last the Mole led them to the surface, each emerged, blinking and squinting to the brightness of the sunlight. Some of your tribe didn’t like the brightness and wanted to return to the depth of the earth.. But because Mole had instructed all to pass back the soil the tunnel had been filled in and there was no return.” The Elder paused as the woman cleaned her brushes with a tissue..

“ Mole was to become known as ‘The Pathfinder’ his gift to man was the Sunlight and Wind which the Human tribe had not experienced before. Mole is one of the caretakers of our Earth Mother, he does not judge another by what he looks like, for he is blind to Bias. Instead Mole relies upon his own gifts and senses, through touch, smell, and feeling the vibrations and changes around him.  He knows before any other creature the rumblings and stirrings within our Earth Mothers breast. He knows when an earthquake is coming and he feels the eruptions and so knows of our Earth Mothers pain”

The Elder stopped speaking,  She smiled  at another triple number appeared 11:11am. The music on the player had long ago stopped.  She looked down at the Elder upon her paper. Mentally thanking the Standing Ones for the gifts, they gave.

The woman stood, and stretched her limbs satisfied with her work and saw how there as if by magic other animals had been woven into the roots. But those stories were for another session when the paints would bring their stories to life.

i came on as your post came in 🙂
a path was what i was thinking of as i came in from walk, put on Pachelbel 🙂
reading your words i saw the mole just beneath the earth, working on a new path, one that light in …darkness is always a path back to the light for me, i seem to tunnel under, deeper in thoughts these days…but i know the light is always waiting for me as is the air to breathe just above the surface…
i hadn’t thought of that story in a long time…Thank you My Friend 🙂
( Air by Johann Sebastian is now playing so it must be time to breathe )
I enjoyed your story, very visual, you paint life i like that

Love your synchronicities my friend.. talk about Signs.. 🙂

Yes I think the mole and it being caretaker etc holds its roots in Lakota and The Tewa tribe and their legends Mary..:-) I know I have read so many of these wonderful Native American legends connecting animals to our world and creation.. and have in the past posted some ..
Many thanks again.. So good to see you Mary.. xx

This is so lovely and timely Sue. It reminds me of stories I heard from Elders when I lived and studied in New Mexico with Native Americans. It also reminds me of the unique and greatly important stories relayed through a pack of Medicine Cards a friend of mine put out. Are you familiar with “The Discovery of Power Through The Ways of Animals” by Jamie Sams and David Carson? It is a deck of medicine tarot cards and they are wonderful. Highly recommend to you as they resonate so much with what you are doing here. I can’t wait to read and see more! Blessings and Love to you Dear Friend! 🙂

I have checked a little bit and “Das Märchen vom Maulwurf” (Tale about the Mole) by Richard Fedor Leopold Dehmel from 1896 is telling a comparable but different story about a dwarf king making his way from the center of Earth to the ground (in more than 3000 years), and after reaching finally the light of sun and colors on ground all of a sudden changes to a mole. So I really look forward to the continuation of your spinning threads.

A beautiful weaving of spiritual words and wisdom. I like the woman in the story can breathe in too much toxicity of humanity today and find ways to soothe the soul other ways. I too like the woman am twined with Gaia. Always have been as a child and always will be until my death. Nature is the only thing that fills its destiny, however mankind is the only species that does not. It is a species that destroys. Love your story with its wonderful spiritual wisdom. Can wait for the second part. Be well and stay well. ❤

There seem to be stages of painting, just like stages of sleep, and we slip into that realm that’s like a dream yet we’re awake and watching as if a voeuyer…. there are times when i’m ‘there’ and question the direction i’m going – and a subtle silent yet strong feeling nudges me to trust and keep going… it’s as if a higher power takes over — ah, blessed is the person who sticks with it and reaches that magical stage.

The triple numbers seem to be appearing more and more, esp the 222 and 333…

    Beautiful story!

And we will look back at this time of chaos we are creating and see why it was a needed process for us to emerge into the light..
Thank you for your wonderful encouragement.. And more parts of the painting will be posted later today along with another chapter of the Story.. 🙂 and thank you Mark for your lovely comment 🙂

Thank you Bela.. Life is all about transformation.. And we are about to go through yet another period I feel of being taught another valued lesson. The Lows in life make us appreciate the highs, and then for them to know that what they perhaps thought was a low period was in fact a high one..

It took me all day to read this so I have to go back and read it again. It’s been a very full day and I’m so far behind again as I am making concerted efforts to move stuff out of space while it’s dry for a few days. I love how instead of the story bringing about the painting, the painting brings about the story. It’s funny how most people make a fuss about mole holes in their yards. My dog used to kill them and even ate one. But like ants, the earth needs them to keep the soil loose along with worms. Everything has it’s place. Though, I have still not found a good reason for the stink bugs. Even the birds won’t eat them. I see triple numbers several times a day. I know I’m being taken care of. 🙂 I’ll be back for the rest of the story. Rain next week and more time to myself. 🙂 Hugs and love. You make me wish I could paint. ;(

Oh sorry it took so long to read Marlene.. was it the size of the print? as I know you struggle at times with this.. Yes Moles are often considered annoying when they turn up in our lawns.. I have 3 such mole hills in my own lawn at the moment.. LOL.. they appeared in October last year then they vanished and you will not believe it but the morning of the post another mole hill appeared and then two more haha… I took a photo on my garden blog.. 🙂 lol..
Yes everything has its place.. And I am so pleased we do not get you stink bugs.. lol.. I looked them up and I wouldn’t like a plague of them..
And yes, you are a very aware and enlightened Lady Marlene.. And enjoy your time to yourself Marlene.. we all need more of that.. Love and hugs.. Love Sue xxx

It took all day because I had so many interruptions. Your print is larger than most and so much easier and more comfortable for me to read. I use the ctrl+ key to make other pages more readable. Some print on other blogs is so small that it’s just almost not worth the struggle. We had a plague of the stink bugs 2 summers ago. I hope the freeze this winter will slow it down. I do like my quiet time though I am still fortunate enough to have friends and family around a great deal of the time. Life is good. Have a wonderfilled week and weekend. Giant Hugs. M

I absolutely cannot wait to read more about the Elder Tree. The significance of these numbers.
I continue to see the number 33. Sometimes two or three times per day.
I know that the path I’m on is the steady one, and I’m patiently (but anxiously, too) awaiting to see where all this goes.
I cannot wait to see the rest of the painting, too.
We are entering dark times ahead. But, somehow, I believe that we will emerge more united than before, with a strength and a resolve to change and respect Mother Earth. Somehow the darkness is going to lead to the light. I don’t know how I know…but I’ve thought this since the beginning.
And so it is with your story. I can’t wait to read the rest!

Yes my thoughts like yours Cynthia are that we are heading for some rocky turbulent times but out of the ashes the Phoenix is rising And all things have reason and purpose even though at times we are too close within our changes to see what is really happening.. Nature too will also play her role in this.. Of this I am certain. I have never felt more alive than I do now.. And know that we are being guided, and this is why we came at this time.. to help others see from another perspective..

Love and Hugs my friend and again Well done you are being part of that Historic march.. 🙂 Kudos to you xxx

one question, please: have you ever met Native Americans in the US?… 'cause I did, several times during the 5 years spent in THEIR country(land of the free?!)… you may recall that I reckon myself as a Darwinian-Cartesian, and I've even adopted their 10 commandments – genuine wisdom & pure common sense: 🙂

    1. The Earth is our Mother, care for Her.
    2. Honor all your relations with your fellows.
    3. Open your heart and soul to the Universal Spirit.
    4. All life is sacred, treat all beings with respect and tolerance.
    5. Take from the Earth what is needed and nothing more.
    6. Do what needs to be done for the good of all.
    7. Speak the truth but only for the good in others.
    8. Follow the rhythm of Nature: rise and retire with the sun.
    9. Take full responsibility for your actions.
    10. Enjoy life’s journey, but leave no tracks; look after the well-being of Mind and Body…

Thank you Melanie..I am so pleased you PiCKED out those insights dear friend.. And no I have never met any Native Americans for real.. but I have always had huge empathy with the First Nation People and their ways of BEing and their Commandments.. and studied in my own time some of their Native Sciences.. Thank you so much for adding them here they are in their rightful place.. May we all adhere to them.. For WE are responsible for our actions How we think how we act, all contribute to the whole..

    Hi Sue,

    An ethereal post indeed.

I sense your tale is going to take us on a journey with no beginning and no end. Of the beginning and the end morphing into each other….. Just as the painting is morphing into the creative hues of fantasy.

I suppose each reader is bound to derive his own special meaning as he reads this post. Just as I read, I too try to create a meaning of ‘what does it look like’…..

So the mole to me is scarcely a pathfinder but more of a mother giving ‘birth’ to wisdom. The wisdom of what lies beyond the confines within which we are shackled. The wisdom to trust our own resolve to search for the meaning of not only ‘what is’ but ‘what could be’.The wisdom of one’s destiny………

    Blessings

Thank you dear Shakti for that wonderful interpretation of the Mole, I love it.. Birthing is in a way held within my next post of Renewal and Regeneration. and yes this post series could well morph into more creativity along with some fantasy which is coupled with the hidden truth.. Truth which alters as our perception of it changes.. 🙂 Something we are all in need of looking deeper to ‘See’ what our own minds make of the world..
Many thanks again my good friend.. I am delighted that you are back within the world of blog again its good to have your thoughts again here on Dreamwalker’s Sanctuary ..
      Blessings

WP needs a, “To be read,” indicator. I meant to come back to this and forgot.
I am one of those who prefer shorter posts, however, this is wonderful.

The weaving of the autobiographical account of your recent leg of this journey mixed with a fascinating mythology rife with symbolism and mystical references like 11:11.
    Thoroughly enjoyed.

I am so pleased you came back Michael and managed to read the post in full.. I see these triplicate and double number sequences all the time.. on shopping bills, car number plates.. lol.. when we open up to seeing signs then we have to learn to understand what they are telling us, that too comes with patience and practice.. 🙂 Many thanks for your comment and I am delighted you enjoyed 🙂

    Hi Sue,

I wandered back here to read your story that accompanies your painting. It is wonderfully enchanting and very revealing. Your painting in this form does remind me a bit of my colonodyssey piece. There are so many layers, very intricate and mysterious.

    love to you,

Yes, I agree, there are always hidden messages for us to discover within our art work.. It is a living piece that we dive into and discover something new about ourselves in the process of its creation..
This was a wonderful experience and the words are still flowing.. ❤ Thank you and Much love returned Linda..

Hi Sue, You have so beautifully penned the story and packed so much wisdom of nature in it that it leaves me awestruck.
The strong connection between nature and its elements and the significance of each, including the Elder tree, its roots, soil, mole etc come out perceptibly in the story. The roots of the Elder tree hold together the soil, the ‘pathfinder’ mole makes the soil fertile and shows the way to light,
The day we start appreciating the role of each of these elements and realize the fact that we belong to the earth, but the earth does not belong to us, we may slow down the pace of environmental degradation.

Yes as you say Somali it is WE who belong to the Earth not the other way around.. And I think before we are done she will be teaching us all great lessons for not appreciating and respecting her and her many elements of flora and fauna and mineral kingdoms before too long..
Thank you so much for reading Somali many thanks and sending much love your way xx

Wow, that is some great story that you have woven Sue, a parable within a painting, excellent and great reading all through. I enjoy how your mind interprets the elements and world around us.

Dear Sue, such deeply thought through stories are what we look forward to awaken our conscious keep going into slumber and make us realize that our existence has full dependency on nature and the vice versa is not true. Nature has its own ecosystem to sustain and survive the rough and tough of the storm to the pouring of rain to the scorching sun…taking the TREE as the metaphor of our life, how we take birth and how we nurture ourselves by our mother much like the mother earth does to the tree. The growth of a big tree from such a small seed and from one tree to multiple trees creating the forest around us. It looks so natural, we rarely pause and reflect on this very miracle of natural life. So much similarity to the growth of the human tribe, the human tribe gets spread across the different parts of the world, there is a different culture and there is different composition to the community of people across countries and continent.

Mother Earth and the Tree, the more we deep dive into the earth and try to figure out how the soil supports the tree to grow and stand grounded with such heavy loads of branches on its trunk. It is anchored. We all as human being needs to be anchored to our ground to be strong and stand tall. It is an ecosystem…the earthworms, the moles, the water, the sunlight, the soil all play their part and each of their part of equally important to transform that small SEED to a big TREE. We keep seeing the mound of soil popping out of our well manicured lawns and many times we get upset and we ask our gardener to get rid of the moles behind such distraction. But having moles in the soil is very good sign of having more earthworms and earthworms provide the required nourishment to the soil through their dropping called castings. When so many things are happening around the journey of a seed to becoming a tree, capturing the entire landscape of that wonderful journey on the canvas through the spectrum of colors is not easy and manifesting a deeper meaning through that choice of paint lifts us a heighten interpretation of life and beyond. Painting a tree is painter’s delight if you truly love the nature and reversely it reflects our nature.

Yes, like the woman character, we are all constantly bombarded with the negative forces and it keeps coming from different quarters right from what we read to what we see, and in today’s world there is influx of digital distraction…in such situations we want to break free and take a venture into the nature and get disconnected from the digital wire and get connected with self through the wires of nature. What else can do good to us, it has be a good WALKING outside but nature has its ways to test our determination to fight the rigor of winter chill and rejuvenate our senses through a natural spa treatment of mind and soul in such chilling weather.

“Mother Earth where all the seeds are sown and where the knowledge is born”, so beautifully articulated. Just started reading the first part, will soon shift to the next one, it is exciting and our discussion will have a multiplier affect, as this topic is close to me and reminds me of my story on nature “The Voice”…
Thanks Sue for such a lovely narration of beautiful thoughts on Mother Earth.
    Hugs & Love!!!

We and our Mother Earth are not separate at all.. Nor is any living thing within it.. All creatures both great and small play a huge part in binding our World together in her ONEness.. Indeed Sue, every organism have a role to play in this natural ecosystem and it haves a little difference to size and life span they have…this very interdependence of living creatures makes the earth such fascinating place to live and explore every bit of existence and many times we lose the plot and we look at the wood and forget about the tree that get uprooted, we look at the paper and forget about the tree that get cut…nature has all the life lessons that we need to learn but unfortunately we have stopped looking at nature and learning through observation and exploration.
Nature, is the best teacher and we just need to be there and nature generosity can be experienced…
        Hugs!!!

Exactly Nihar.. We have long forgotten that we are not separate from Nature but part of it. And she will reflect back to us what we project out.. I hope we can teach our younger generations to learn more respect for ALL Flora and Fauna .. Many thanks again Nihar

I agree Sue, if we can bring that sense of appreciation and belonging of younger generation to nature, we can make a huge difference in their life and future for them will be better place to live.
The irony is the more we trying understand the relationship between human beings and nature, the more we realize how far off we have gone away from the natural habitat to the artificial simulated dwelling of comfortable…
Yes, we look for some pathfinder which we can change the world towards a better place…

Yes we have strayed far from Mother Natures intended path. And like any Good Mother I am sure Mother Nature will no doubt have much to teach us. And we will have wished we had listened and paid heed to nurture her more… But such are the lessons perhaps Mankind needs to learn… Until she/he understands our Earth is a living-Breathing-BEing.. And we are not separate from her.. But part of her.. And we also do not understand that our Mass Consciousness is also affecting her.. Just like the MOON affects us, And the Astrology of the planets affect our birth charts.. We are all of us connected.. 🙂 Thank you again Nihar.. I hope you are enjoying your week 🙂

Hey Sue! I have been thinking of you and came on line to say hello and found this wonderful story. I look forward to reading the other parts. In some of my shamanic work, I have spent time underground. There is so much to know from there. It’s funny, today I was planning to send away for the makings of a worm farm to create wonderful soil from our compost.
I hope you are well, dear friend. I haven’t been on line much, but wanted you to know I am sending love to you always. ❤
    Peace

And I know you will appreciate its theme given your shamanic work..

Each of us, carries within us the capacity to change the world in small ways for better or worse. Everything we do and think affects the people in our lives, and their reactions in turn affect others As the effect of a seemingly insignificant word passes from person to person, its impact grows and can become a source of great joy, inspiration, anxiety, or pain. Your thoughts and actions are like stones dropped into still waters, causing ripples to spread and expand as they move outward.. I hope that I can send a few ripples out via the web of life, as we each of us weave the threads together... Welcome to my Sanctuary of Peace and Love...
