The Isle of Iona~ Now A Place of Peace..

So the tour continued from the Isle of Mull in to the crossing by ferry from there to the peaceful  Isle of Iona. But this island although it became a training centre for Monks who would in those early years live in beehive shaped stone huts, where they would meditate in solitude within their prayers. It became a major  pilgrimage  centre when the Abbey was built..   Iona is also an Isle situated upon the trading routes between Ireland and Western Scotland.  And many Kings are buried there..  Many scholars believe that The Book of Kells  started its creative life there in the 8th Century.

It also saw its share of violence in many Viking raids as they plundered the riches of the Abbey.  Many  Monks were slaughtered during this time.. More history of these events you can find out by clicking the underlined links .

The Ferry came in as we waited on the shores of Mull, above are the stunning views as we waited for the Ferry.

The Isle of Iona is a serene Isle which only has a population of around 13o people.

Our first glimpse of the Abbey as we approached by Ferry the Isle of Iona

Our first glimpse of the Abbey as we approached by Ferry the Isle of Iona you can see the small cottages spead around it.

It has one of the oldest and most sacred religious places in all of western Europe..  It was founded by St Columba in AD 563, the fully restored Abbey is one of Scotland’s most significant and sacred sites which is reputed to be the burial place of 48 Kings of Scotland, including Macbeth

We walked up from being dropped off by the ferry past this row of houses which overlook the shore line

As we walked up the narrow lane we past several small cottages and these were some of their gardens overlooking the shore

The Old Nunnery

This plaque shows how the nunnery once was

The first site to greet us was the ruins of the Old Nunnery,  which was founded in 1200, by Reginald, son of Somerled (Lord of the Isles).  Who installed his sister Beatrice there as prioress  forming the first order of Nuns there. The Nunnery earned the name of The Black Church because of the black habits worn by the nuns

This part of the Abbey has not been restored and still lays in ruins.

Here you can see the ruins of the Nunnery and the The pink granite walls that remain, despite being ruinous, are amongst the best examples of a medieval nunnery left in Britain.

Before we walked the rest of the way up to the Abbey of Iona we went past a small cottage with a sign in its window.. Home Made Soup.. It was well past lunch time so we went in and had a take away bowl of home made broccoli soup and home made bread roll. The occupants were delighted to see so many of our coach party and promptly sent the message back into their kitchen as more soup was put on as we said there were at least 40 more walking up the hill .. It was delicious

Just a little further along we got to the Abbey of Iona  Gates  If you look you can see a Stone Cross in the middle of the Abbey above the people walking. More photo’s and information can be found  Here about these Crosses which have looked out across this ever changing World for more than 1,200 years.

We went walk about’s in the time allotted to explore a little bit more of this community and passed the local Fire Station

We went exploring some more coming across this memorial cross with the names of those who gave their lives in the 1914-1918 Great War.. And one must wonder what impact losing so many husbands and sons had on this small community..  The names of which and closer pictures of this cross can be found at the sight of The Scottish Military Research Group Here

And to finish off this beautiful peaceful time spent on the Isle before we caught the next to ferry back to the Isle of Mull I will share these lovely views with you.

Wishing you ALL a very Peaceful Weekend

Love and Blessings

You really did score some great weather Sue…and some great scenery to go with it 🙂
It would have been an incredible tour to lap up the actual places of your history, and you can only ‘feel’ a place by being there, out of the history books just doesn’t give that ‘understanding’ like being there does 🙂

Yes without the weather Mark this trip would not have been half as good.. Often its misty and raining so the views would not have been seen through low cloud.. It made all the difference.. And was the best week up there in October.. You could say we ordered it.. As I did ask for Sunshine lol.. And yes you can feel the history of the place and it sets your mind to wander back in time to how awful those times were too…
Love and Blessings to you Mark.. Thank you @=_

Thank you Marlene, I agree with you.. History is full of pain and violence .. Which is why I added in my title Now A Place of Peace.. for it wasn’t always so.. You would think the human race would learn from our past History.. Yet we repeatedly keep on repeating itself..
The soup warmed us as it was a chill wind despite the Sunny day.. And it was just what we needed.. 🙂 And that home made bread.. Just mouth watering.. 🙂 🙂 xxx Have a great weekend Marlene.. Much love your way xx

My eyes are glazed over with wonder, Sue. How incredible this Abby is still standing and the history involved is fascinating. I did click on the link for the Celtic Cross and my stomach fell out from under me … so many lives lost and many of them just kids. Beautiful shots and like Lorrie, I too could feel the energy. I would have been floating for days afterwards. I’m floating now just viewing this post. Bless you for putting such a complex post together for us! ❤

it was a pleasure for me to read this “story” about history, nature, religion and life ..!! I found a blog in my language (romanian) with a description of the island I’m sure you will like it !!
“revealing a face of Orthodox Christianity that we, believers today, I forgot it. Here heart wants to pray outside in nature. Here, the Atlantic coast is the church and surrounding rocks are altars.”

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about Scotland. There’s a netflix series called Reign that has captured my attention (and gives me a nice break from time to time from studying), the intro has a lovely soulful song by the Lumineer’s called Scotland that often gets stuck in my head. I haven’t been to Edinburgh since the 1990s but the isles, believe it or not, I think about (solely in my mind — hahaha, not!) quite often these days. And you’ve taken me there with you! I can’t believe there’s only 130 people on the isle of Iona. Xo Ka

I don’t know, Sue. Maybe I would feel the isolation. I have to say that your picture of the local post office makes me delighted. There’s something upon seeing a local post office that makes me feel like I’ve been to a place. I suppose sometimes the spaciousness of a land might help people feel a little bit freer (is there internet?). Sure, these are speculations, but there’s something I remember about the land nearby, the land I visited, being triggered (in a good way) from these images. Also, the war memorial shows many young who had died too early in my opinion. We are so fortunate… we who live and get to read and watch or visit about the tales. We who can feel the energy and travel through time. We are fortunate to connect, even with the emptiness of a moment, for surely the next moment brings connection. Have a beautiful rest of your week, Sue!

You know the USA is born of a land of many whose knowledge was wiped away.. Its path I hope will one day build the foundations of Peace.. Its buildings may not be ancient.. But let us hope it leaves us a great legacy of its first Founding Fathers who wrote its Constitution .. I doubt those founding fathers could have also envisaged a future America with its diverse communities of today..

I am delighted I allowed you to travel to this place April as you pondered upon the lives of the past.. 🙂 Love and Hugs your way xxx

Yes Thank you David, As I saw the ruins and thought on those Nuns and Monks.. I wondered upon their own experiences.. Peace being shattered in invasions.
And I look upon the world today as I shake my head as the news headlines only today say the UK is to invest more millions in building a Fleet of new Navel Destroyers to keep the PEACE.. I laughed out loud.. at the absurdity of us Humans.. War never brings Peace.. Only more destruction.. And I sighed as I thought back to those Viking Days of Old.. And the laws of the land have not progressed much further forward have they..
But more and more I see the Collective ‘WE’ standing up for Peace.. and that brings Hope for Peace to my heart.. And one day I hope too these troubled lands will one day look upon their own ruins and come to know the sense of Peace I found on the shores of Iona..

Love and Blessings to you my friend.. Thank you!

But a British woman and her young family have moved out there.. The children were interviewed on TV.. They all loved their new teacher.. And it showed how they biked themselves to school.. Only a handfull of pupils in the whole school.. 🙂

That’s incredible!. Just think what an education her children are getting in living more self-reliantly.

We have a similar situation with our schools in Alaska. Teachers apply for two year job teaching positions up there. The thinking is that because half the year is in darkness it takes a toll mentally and most can’t stay longer than that.
