Painting for Pleasure

Having had a few days to please myself, and being as its been raining most days,  so the garden has been out of bounds.. I decided to revitalise a galvanised bucket which had been sat outside for some time..

Mouse painting on Tin Bucket 1

We bought some herbs from the garden centre last week and we will plant them in the bucket which we have put drain holes in, to stand on the patio.. I didn’t get any photo’s of what it looked like before, but thought I would spruce it up even more with a little mouse.. Well in fact two cheeky mice!.

Mouse on Tin Bucket

All I have to do now is add some clear varnish over the bucket to keep weather proof.. Then plant the herbs.. I came across Robert Burns poem To A Mouse.

Below is the Standard English Translation from Robert Burns original Poem so those who do not understand the broad Scottish in the Video, so you can translate and understand..

Thank you for Reading

Sue

Small, crafty, cowering, timorous little beast,
O, what a panic is in your little breast!
You need not start away so hasty
With argumentative chatter!
I would be loath to run and chase you,
With murdering plough-staff.

I’m truly sorry man’s dominion
Has broken Nature’s social union,
And justifies that ill opinion
Which makes thee startle
At me, thy poor, earth born companion
And fellow mortal!

I doubt not, sometimes, but you may steal;
What then? Poor little beast, you must live!
An odd ear in twenty-four sheaves
Is a small request;
I will get a blessing with what is left,
And never miss it.

Your small house, too, in ruin!
Its feeble walls the winds are scattering!
And nothing now, to build a new one,
Of coarse grass green!
And bleak December’s winds coming,
Both bitter and keen!

You saw the fields laid bare and wasted,
And weary winter coming fast,
And cosy here, beneath the blast,
You thought to dwell,
Till crash! the cruel plough passed
Out through your cell.

That small bit heap of leaves and stubble,
Has cost you many a weary nibble!
Now you are turned out, for all your trouble,
Without house or holding,
To endure the winter’s sleety dribble,
And hoar-frost cold.

But little Mouse, you are not alone,
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best laid schemes of mice and men
Go often askew,
And leave us nothing but grief and pain,
For promised joy!

Still you are blest, compared with me!
The present only touches you:
But oh! I backward cast my eye,
On prospects dreary!
And forward, though I cannot see,
I guess and fear!

Ha that’s an amazing idea for an old bucket, have an old pond I was planning on taking to the dump, but given me an idea now, to use it instead.

Ha I caught a little mouse the other week, investigating the back end of my garden, not sure who was more startled me or the mouse! Been careful in that area not to disturb it, can’t it doing any harm, too far away from the house and reminded me of that mouse from The Green Mile….lol! Mr jingles…..not sure if it’s still about but I don’t mind sharing that section!

Glad the bucket idea gave you an idea to recycle your old pond.. And I loved the film The Green Mile.. and that little mouse..
We have lots of little mice I know in the old wood pile at the bottom of my garden. 🙂 I am sure your little mouse will thank you for leaving it be 🙂

Just because I live here there is no reason we can’t share! Besides I already have a hedgehog that likes to amble round the patio and rockery early evening, quite nice to watch when sat in the conservatory , often more interesting viewing than the TV.
Just looking through some photos on my iPhone from a couple of weeks back digging out an old tree root, and had a little visitor that compelled me to take some pics, when I have a few mins will upload them, think you may like!
Spending time in the garden always gives me space to think……hmmm think I am loosing the plot lol

Staggering transformation, dear Sue,thanks to your artistic disposition !
Just a simple galvanised bucket, turned into a real piece of Art ! Your hero, the little creature, looks fabulous among the delicate flowers and the sign of the sun above them sends enough light to warm the atmosphere. And then came the Burns’ poem to accompany it all.How charming and beautiful your creation is !!!

Val we all have talent of various degrees… Once upon a time I would hardly paint… Practices may not make perfect.. but it improves with time… I am fortunate in that the gift of drawing has been given me.. and that I use it to illustrate the things I love.. I am certain given an idea, you could create something just as good if not better… 🙂 even an abstract pattern .. Life is made for colour 🙂

Yes some of the words Ian are really rich and can not be understood.. I know that many of our USA friends may not understand the Scottish dialect. I know ( Smiles ) some have a job understanding my own ‘slang’ in English lol sometimes…. hehe…. Glad the idea sparked off a revamp of a watering can.. Good Luck and enjoy .. 🙂 I have found that even if those who can not paint.. stencils or transfers work just as well 🙂 Happy DIY ing.. 🙂

    Thanks for the translation.
I only really understood a few words of
    Tam o’ Shanter.
“But pleasures are like poppies spread,
    You seize the flower, it’s bloom is shed;
Or, like the snow-fall in the river,
A moment white, then melts forever.”

Thank you Jack, yes Nature is forever producing her own gems.. and the bucket is holding up well, we have now had 3 days and nights rain none stop.. .. I started painting the large tub today.. a Blackbird now is upon it, a snail and some bluebells.. We have a regular blackbird we call him ‘dropwing’ because one of his wings droops, he’s been coming now for a couple of years .. We put meal-worms on the bird table and corn and seeds etc. I often see him pulling worms from the lawn too… So my theme are the visitors to my garden.. One half is now down, I’m waiting for it to dry and tomorrow I will start the other side.. Life is good and this rain is certainly greening everything up, even if the allotment needs some sun to get them growing.
We still need the rain.. _/\_

You get fond of wild birds that befriend you.
There was a magpie befriended me I called him Andy because he had one claw missing, so the pun was he had an “Andycap”. He brought Ladybird and they brought young ones for 4 years. They sat all over me. This is a link to a post Pauline did about the magpies.

Your response was amazing, like you were in the next room.
I knew you would appreciate and the story it was wonderful how that bird had me trained.
He would wake me nice and early I would feed him then hop on my bike down to the beach.
There was some men throwing boomerangs, as the beach was almost deserted at that time of day.
I would have my play in the surf and then get my boomerang lesson.
My aboriginal friend moved on and so had.
That has been my life moving on from on construction job to the next.
At unexpected times you meet again and it is like you saw them yesterday.
Except the conversation is all catch up.

Sue, Pauline and I have bridged the distances and have become friends with lots of people with similar interests.
It really is a community, we read not only the posts but the comments.
I can not get the same feeling on Facebook as with blogging.
Facebook is more for busy people that is why I started linking my posts to Facebook in the hope some, one outside the community, may pick up an idea, and run with it..
It was a happy accident that we met and if as we came we go it will leave a fond memory as Andy went. _/\_

Each of us, carries within us the capacity to change the world in small ways for better or worse. Everything we do and think affects the people in our lives, and their reactions in turn affect others As the effect of a seemingly insignificant word passes from person to person, its impact grows and can become a source of great joy, inspiration, anxiety, or pain. Your thoughts and actions are like stones dropped into still waters, causing ripples to spread and expand as they move outward.. I hope that I can send a few ripples out via the web of life, as we each of us weave the threads together... Welcome to my Sanctuary of Peace and Love... May we each spread our Lights around our World....Sue Dreamwalker
