Just where have the last few days flown too? These last few days seem to have been hectic with my day job, harvesting, and granny sitting which I just love.  Above you can see how my little granddaughter not yet 3 loves to interact with nature… I am trying to teach her not to be afraid of the creepy crawlies and she had this little fellow crawling up over her arms for over 20 mins as she helped us in the allotments…The caterpillar got safely put back in the grass as she gently lifted him, and now knows that caterpillars poo too Smile as she discovered Open-mouthed smile

I seem to have discovered my love of cooking all over again too, and even Hubby who is usually the head cook, has opened his eyes wide at my new found urge to bake more often.. Maybe its the changes in energies as my creative mood seems to have had another boost… So  I will share a couple of recipes with you later in the post.

Ok so remember those Lovely butterflies we have had over Summer?

Peacock

well we also have had our share of the caterpillars and while some in the allotments have sprayed chemicals to get rid of them, we do not use anything like that so its been a case of share and share alike!.

Remember this when I showed you the lattice leaves on the Brussels sprouts ?

Well my hubby set two and stripped off the leaves which were covered in our little friends and then I went and did the same along the cabbage row.

The potatoes are now all dug up, we had  around 10 rows, and some are still drying out in the shed awaiting to be sorted, but we should have around 8 large sacks full.. These sacks hold up to 25kl and have only been filled half way or we would not be able to lift them ..

Yesterday we gathered the last of the sweetcorn in, and that is now all safely frozen. we cleared weeds and hoed where the onions were and potatoes were harvested from

Below you can see the sweetcorn patch along with the Leeks and spring onions we set between them.

Blackberries

We are lucky in the fact that we have some wonderful Blackberry brambles around the back of our Allotment shed and have had an abundance of Berries we have picked this year.. In fact upon my travels I have seen many brambles in hedgerows, but would not fancy picking them from the roadside with all of those exhaust fumes which are deposited upon them.

Preserving in air-tight Jars

So I made a wonderful Blackberry and Apple Chutney, the recipe you can find HERE. as I added it to my recipe pages you can find on the top bar under Home Cooked Recipes

Potato and Beetroot Gratin

Then as we have had an abundance of Beetroot my daughter has been adding them to her smoothies and I tried out the Potato and Beetroot gratin which I had never tried before, and we loved it, and I will be making it again..  You can find this recipe HERE upon my Recipe Page.

On the home front in the green house the tomatoes are coming along now nicely as they are ripening, so that green chutney may not be needed.

I may be quiet again for a time as another busy couple of days coming up again.. I hope you give those recipes a try I was amazed how easy they were to make and they both add that little extra something special to a meal.

Until next time take care and be good to each other..Oh and I am still wading thought the back log of all of your posts

    Mmmm… Fond memories!!! 🙂

my grandparents has a farm and gran’s kitchen garden was 1/4 of an acre and kept them fed all year round!!! 🙂

I have fond memories of working with gran in the garden and one bad memory of spearing my foot with a hay fork I had been given to dig over the garden!!! 😦

Still: For most of the time it was enjoyable and I miss it… 🙂

Love and hugs to you and yours – little one will be a fine gardener!!! 🙂

Very interesting blog. An FB friend just sent me a link to you thinking I might be interested and I definitely am! I have blackberry brambles as well – they grow like mad and have big thorns, but the fruits are tiny and mostly dry – never juicy. I wonder if it’s just the variety, or our rather dry climate, or if there’s something I could do, because it would be great to get some wild organic berries, since the local stores have none (small town in souther Italy).

Hello Anna, so nice that you dropped in to comment and as to your question it may well be the dry climate.. however if your brambles start to send out crawlers why not try to train them to take root in some compost and then transfer to some more richer soil, we also cut them back last year which seem to have yielded a Bigger crop this year… Good luck and why not try raspberries too, 🙂 Many thanks for taking the time to comment
      Blessings Sue 🙂

I so loved this post . I so love gardening, but unfortunately I’m living in a rented house now which does not have any land around it. What’s an allotment, by the way? In my mother’s house , where my sister stays with her family, the homestead is green with the veggies that my sis grows and I so love to just go out and pluck something for preparing some dish for lunch or dinner. Someday, I have promised myself, I will live in a house which has a bit of land around it and I will spend hours sowing seeds and watching saplings grow and water them and may be talk and sing to them. I used to keep about a hundred potted plants on the terrace of the house we lived in earlier. Oh! it was such joy to come back from work in the evenings, have a cup of tea and then spend time with my plants. Weekends were such fun too.

These days , I too am granny-sitting . My daughter is working and will resume soon after her maternity leave. I’ve now come down from Delhi to Bangalore and taken up a place close to where she stays so that I can look after the little kiddo. I too take my nine-month year old grandson for walks in the lane outside . he can already recognise butterflies and dogs and cows in pics because he sees them daily in real. Kids are naturally attuned to nature , I feel. It is we adults who stunt the connection.

You are right Nadira we adults complicate a childs life and stunt their natural abilities as we swamp them with our technological world… They no longer are being brought up to appreciate nature or interact within it.. I am pleased your little one is learning from his Granny what is important … In the Native American Indian ways of ancient times it was the Elders who brought up the little ones, and I so see why… 🙂

To answer your question on what is an allotment? An allotment is a plot of land specifically put aside in a community for the purpose of growing vegetables… I would say upon our plot there must be over 150 allotment holders who rent their small plots with a fee each year, Each plot one is around the same size as ours. And you are permitted to grow veggies and keep hens on there.
Yesterday I came home from a 7and half hour shift and just needed to take my mind and ground it with the earth.. So I went straight to the allotments with my hubby after I’d had a drink to do more weeding…. It helps take the stress away from a gruelling day of dealing with others emotions…. So I can see why you remember and love the garden and land so much xx

lovely to see you here and loved you enjoyed this post Nadira…. Hugs Sue xox

Sue, this is so joyous – just beautiful. Your garden looks like heaven 🙂

Your grand-daughter has a wonderful time in the freshness of your garden – that’s a gift. I didn’t know brussel sprouts have so much bush! Also, I thought a gardener would kill or repel the caterpillars. I wonder what you do? When I got married, I remember wanting to create a vegetable garden but just ended up with half eaten produce, decaying. I had no idea.

    Beautiful stuff, Sue 🙂

Hi Noeleen, yes, we have a joyous time too with our Little girl,, We do not use any products such as weed killers or insect repellents etc This year has been exceptional in that we had a wonderful influx of butterflies, which were a joy to see, they were scarce last year, so really pleased to see them, The downside is that they lay lots of eggs/Caterpillars which devoured our greens.. But live and Let live and there’s enough for all… 🙂

Mother Nature’s caterpillars do seem to wreck havoc at times.Last year I had worms eating my cabbage, and finally turned to hydrated lime which did the trick. I just sprinkled some on the leaves and repeated after rain if it washed it away.

Your food looks delicious and so do your recipes which I will have to try out soon.

Your granddaughter is adorable as always, and love that she was able to enjoy the caterpillar. My little one got pooed on again this week by one. Funny, I’ve never been pooed on. 🙂 Today we attended a parade where a lady bug decided to visit us. My little one had a blast holding it, which had her full attention even with the parade marching down the street.

those little Caterpillars are only small but they sure have a Big appetite, so the Poo end is often uses as a defence so I have heard, how true that is I have to find out… 🙂 The recipes are good, I seem to have been busier this year than ever with trying out new things, that apple and blackberry chutney is a must try… I was looking for the recipe and came across this one, I know you have more butternut squashes over there than we do, so hope you can get to view this one, it looks tasty
