Spring here in the UK has been a long while in coming. I think its been the longest 7 months I can remember, as last years wash-out Summer spilled into a wet cool Autumn, which ended with the coldest winter in over 50 years. Spring seemed to never want to spring as we had yet more deep snow, and even now the buds are only just showing us their green tips as they sleepily awake from their cold winters slumber. The chill is still in the air.
So today I went with Hubby to take a few photos.. as even I managed to get down and plant a few onion sets last week which were watered today as we have had strong winds which are drying out the earth this week.
The Potatoes are in, We have earliest and the main crop. We are putting 10 rows in this year.. Potatoes here have risen in price due to many farmers fields being flooded and waterlogged.. The potatoes are lying in the ground unable to be harvested as the machinery cannot get through the water-logged fields so they lay rotting.
The Bean poles are in, but the Beans are not set yet, too early and cold. But we will start them off in the green house.. Like we are doing the sweet corn. which is already sprouting.
In front of the Beans Poles we set the Parsnips these were started off by germinating on our window sills on damp kitchen paper, the term is called chitting They are soaked and kept damp and warm to encourage sprouting. Before being planted in the ground.. We did this with our Beetroot too and they are just showing above the ground new growth.
On the left is the Rhubarb coming through and those rows of sticks you see on the Right are the Raspberry canes which my hubby thinned out this year and transplanted. Our Raspberries rotted in the rain last year as did our Strawberries. The little bush to the bottom right is a Gooseberry bush.
So this year I took all the new shoots off the old Strawberry plants and replanted in a raised bed freshly prepared with good compost and manure at the base. We created 3 raised beds seen here. the others will have Salad foods grown in them such as spring onions, lettuce, and herbs.
The weather has been so cold, that most of our plants have been started off on window sills in our home, then they have been transferred to the cold frame in the allotments.. Below you can see the brassica selections of Various Cabbages, January Kings, Savoy Kale etc just starting to sprout nicely.
So, We have made a start, All the hard work goes to my husband who has been putting 2 hours in the allotments each day preparing and digging in the manure and clearing it ready for planting..
We have also put into pots the Tubas of the Begonias which have been over wintered in dry compost in the side shed of our home. These are going in the baskets and pots around our home.
I hoped you enjoyed your own garden and if you don’t have much of a garden you can always start growing various things in pots which look good on Patioās and Balconies. Such as Strawberries and Tomatoes in hanging baskets..
Enjoy your Garden and outdoorsā¦and I am happy to once again be able to Grow my own in the outdoors as the weather is improving..

A handy looking amount of allotment space there Sue, we’ve tried growing strawberries in the garden but we have so many slugs and snails they had a glorious feast as we stood by and watched, not able to do anything… (even the hanging baskets, ) Apparently there was an upswing in Snails and slugs last year, with it being so wet and mild, hopefully some of the little darlings have been sorted by the hard winter and Spring… I know there’s ways of getting rid, but I can’t bring myself to do anything, not kill them, I mean, as I believe everything has a right to life, I do try and tell them to push off but they take no notice… š … You look fully prepared for anything there, so I wish you a bumper crop later on in the year.. (leave all the back breaking stuff for ‘him outdoors’ … š ) … love ‘n’ light my friend. xPenx

Yes the wet weather Pen brought on the onslaught of Slugs and snails, our strawberries perished as did our raspberries they rotted in the wet and cool weather and got devoured to boot! š Glad some thing thrived last Summer LOL. Most allotment holders were the same, poor crops. We have a very small tub size pond of sorts which the frogs love, some allotment holders have larger ponds as some have ducks and hens etc..So the frog population is great and they must have had a feast last year on the slugs… I had to fish out a dead toad the other day from ours as the Ice must have trapped it.. Yes I dont use anything to kill them,. I have a small pond in my back garden at home as well, and the frogs in there take care of the slugs… Im looking forward to tending the allotments this year.. Lets hope we have more clement weather to help the growing season.. š Thanks Pen for your welcome Visit.. Hugs Sue x

Ruth thank you with your well wishes and Good luck also with your mini orchard.. We had a lovely plum tree in our garden that grew in a tub, it gave us lovely crops until one year it fell foul to an unknown disease and just died on us.. But many fruiting trees can be grown in miniature this way giving enough fruit for a family. Good Luck

Sue, you have such a lovely plot. I am way behind on getting some things started and too early on others. I just can’t figure out the weather. I so hope we all have a good summer for gardening.

You have done well, Sue. That’s amazing that she can identify the flowers in your garden at such a young age.
Yesterday we had thunderstorms off and on all day, I had my grand-daughter as well. In between the rain we headed outside. She amazes me by what she remembers from last year. she spotted worms in puddles and informed me worms were good because their poop gives our plants vitamins. She then proceeded to pick up all the worms, alive and dead, and carry them back to the garden where she carefully placed them near a plant.
Our grandchildren are our future, we need to help them learn everything they will need to know to deal with an unpredictable future. Your grand-daughter is well on the way!

Hi Alex yes it is good Spring at last is at least trying to warm up a little, although today another cool day.. the Sun has tried several times behind the rain clouds..
The plot which we measured where we planted was 165ft long by 45ft wide last year. that doesn’t include the sheds or the space behind the sheds where we have water barrels and a compost heap.. All told I guess the whole plot is 200 ft in length… and In the whole allotments I would say there are about 200 allotment holders with similar size plots.. The land was left for this purpose by the Duke of Portland many years ago…

Hi Sue,
Loved the spontaneity of your post.
It indeed is a great feeling of positivity when spring is in the air in colder climes like yours.Almost as if the world and all that it holds is getting renewed and reinvigorated. This feeling of positivity holds the potential of sending positive vibrations all across. Such vibrations, when sent out, can only attract similar positivity and healing. But are we, as society open to that as we scamper through our daily lives? So what is that shift we need to bring into ourselves to allow us to receive?
As I think of this, William Wordsworth’s words come to mind.
“For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.”
Blessings

You have picked one of my favourite poems with my favourite poet Shakti, I have the pleasure of owning a first edition of W, Wordsworth poems ..
The ‘Shift’ has to come from our own ‘Thinking’ -those thoughts and dreams and places in solitude my friend.. We can either stay in the Spring of our minds and bloom like the Summer.. or we can shrivel in our cold dark thoughts of Winter of discontent.
The Choice is always ours which ever way we wish to grow– We can aspire to the ‘Light’ as our plants do… or we wither and die … Nothing is lost however, for all goes back to Mother Nature.. ALL GO BACK TO THE SOURCE! š
many thanks my good friend for your visit.. always a pleasure to see you Shakti..

I envy your garden Sue, you have so much space and potential, I have to grow my stuff above ground as we are renting in a landscaped area, your garden reminds me of the English show Bread, with Freddy Boswell and his allottment, a place to go and enjoy your own garden. I have no success with potatoes, they are planted from seed potatoes but end up with no size.
We are now heading into winter here yet the days are still warm, weird weather here, the cooler on during the day and the electric blankets on at night, it will even out in a few weeks.
Cheers
