The Good Old Days..
We thought they’d Never End!!
Yesterday as I stood in a cue to pay a bill, in line were several pensioners.. They started by complaining about the cost of living and how the bills had gone up.. They said they had had a small increase in their state pensions, but already the bill that we were all paying, the ‘Council Tax’ imposed by our local authorities for amenities such as refuge collection, and our Emergency services had well exceeded their pay rise..
They then started to talk about the ‘Good Old Days’.. One said she remembered when a joint of meat had to last you for several meals..Now she said the price of a joint was so expensive by the time she had cooked a piece she could afford, there wasn’t much left of it as it was so small..She recalled the lovely Dripping you used to get off the joint..
An old gentleman then joined in the conversation saying he remembered when he was a lad and times were hard, he would take his Dad’s Sunday suit to the pawnbrokers shop on Monday and reclaim it back on Friday when his Dad got paid. He said that suit travelled miles backwards and forwards to the pawnbrokers. He looked at me and said you are too young to remember.. I smiled at him and said thank you, but I remember well the Dripping sandwiches for lunch!!! He laughed..
Another lady joined in by saying that the ‘young one’s don’t know they are born today. They live on credit, and think that life owes them a living with some young girls getting pregnant just to get a council house, and claiming benefits… ‘We had to make our bed’ she said ‘and lay in it’.. ‘We didn’t get any help unless you got off your backside and worked for it..’
Another lady who was stood to the side with her trolley on wheels then joined in, and said ‘Yes they want everything these days.. They can’t wait to save up for it, they go into debt to pay for it all’.. ‘But it’s made so easy for them by the banks to get into debt’.. She said, ‘We might not have had much money in those days, but we could sleep at nights, and not have to lock our doors behind us either’.
The old gent said, ‘Yes, and just look at the state of the ‘Bl**** Country, what with the young hoodlums! And then the Banks that got us into such a mess. And did you see what the RBS was charging for lending it back.. 21 Bl***dy Percent!!! And the Tax payer has just stopped them from going Bust!!! It makes me wonder, who’s the biggest Thieves?’
By this time I had got to the counter…
‘My Food Bill is going up every week,’ said the lady with the trolley..
‘You can’t beat growing your own stuff’ said the old gent..
‘No you can’t’ I said, as turned back from the counter, having paid my Bill.. ‘My Husband has an allotment, and there is now a waiting list now to get one’.. You can’t beat your own food.. At least you know it’s fresh… As Supermarket produce doesn’t seem to last very long’ I said turning to go through the door.
I left saying good bye to the group of people, and I was wished a good day in return.
As I walked back to my car I thought on what had been said..
Yes maybe they were the GOOD OLD DAYS After all…

Oh I remember when my mum and I lived with nothing, not even electricity, funny enough I love my kids no end, however I do get a bit annoyed when they take certain, not all, things for granted.. Just like electricity…. I wish I could go back in time and take them there, in fact I wish I could go back in time non stop just live in the GOOD OLD DAYS, I must admit the modern world does not float my boat.. Dreamwalker, I hope you are good my dear friend, Love, light and hugs to you on this rainy Thursday.xxx
