Acceptance

Acceptance.

This is for you Ian / Emu my friend. As you nudged me into telling it for others to read.. Though it’s not half as remarkable as the story you have added from your brother Daryl .

This story is one of Acceptance.. Accepting others no matter what circumstances their situation had placed them in.. I wonder how many of us today look the other way at things which do not fit within our own little comfort zone. We judge others on their outward appearances, shunning, or labelling to fit our own perception of what is right.

My story is that of my Husbands.. Taking you back to when he was a lad.. He lived with his family on a small holding in the Derbyshire Dales.. He has very fond memories, of chopping wood with his Dad, keeping chickens and Geese which were better than any guard dog.

He and his brother and sisters used to have to walk a good five miles from home to school, and he was only 5yrs old when he started the trek, come rain wind or snow.

He has some very strong memories of those early years, as he helped his Dad set snares at dusk for rabbits which was part of their staple diet, Rabbit and Pheasant were on the menu a lot.. Times were tough and Money short..

His mum too used to walk the journey into the local Town, and catch the bus back to their nearest bus stop to fetched weekly groceries, taking a shortcut back to their small holding across the fields. about another mile and a half walk, with four carrier bags in each hand, full of shopping for her family of 8, For they had 6 children.

On one such occasion, My husband remembers that his Mum got chased across the field by an angry Ram with huge horns and  all her shopping  which was tossed up in the air, with bags flying she ran for the style. And all the family later had to search the field for items of shopping and her purse which had been flung out of her hand.. She never did find her money that scattered out of her purse, though I am told there wasn’t a deal to find.

Now around every 6 months or so, This same Old Tramp would pass by, and such was the hospitality of the family, they would always invite him in..

My Husband said it was something that as small kids they would all look forward to with excitement, as they hardly ever had visitors.

He would take his worn boots off at the door, and Hubby’s Mother would say help yourself to some food and she would often leave him frying up a meal on the woodstove while she went to walk across the field to meet her children coming back from school on the last part of their journey home.

The old boy, who was clean shaven and took pride in his old worn torn clothes would settle in the chair by the wood stove and wait until the ‘master’ of the house returned from his working day..

The Kids would sit around him in anticipation waiting..

For he always used to wait until my husband’s Dad came home and had had his own meal, Then he would pull his meagre belonging to him that he carried on a sack, and pull out a few of his prize possessions he’d collected on his travels..

He would tell the Kids tales of where he found an old coin from, or how he’d found this special feather, and how he’d smoothed a piece of green glass to shine like a gem..

He would tell them how he’d travelled the miles and the places he’d been, and with Belly full, and stories told he would go to sleep in the barn, after refusing a bed in the house, saying he was used to the outdoors and stars for company..

And next day he would be off on his travels.. having been given a pair of My father-in-laws Boots ,Food in his bag, and some money in his pocket that they could ill afford.. But they always set him up for the next stage of his travels

The family always looked forward to this Old boys visits,, and He was sorely missed,  when one year he failed to turn up. And they concluded that he must have travelled along the road to his final resting place..

I just wonder how many of us Look the other way when we see such Tramps, and do we really know the stories why they ended up on the road.. How many of us turn the other way when we see someone not fitting our own comfort zone.

I find this all the while as I go out and about with those whom I look after with learning difficulties..

Thank goodness for such charities such as the Salvation Army and their volunteer who are on the front line of homelessness.. My heartfelt thanks go out to people like  Ian’s brother Daryl and his Story

Here in New Zealand there is a small problem. But there are organizations like the soup kitchen and pop in centres and things that take care of them. So the problem is not that bad here. When we went for a holiday in New York when I was a child the problem was really bad there. I don\’t know what it is like there now days mind you. Hugs Lady Jude

That would be a great blog/story to have printed here in the US now with the economy. Many tent cities are being created in the main major cities. Many are people that lost their homes due to foreclosures. many lost a job. The best thing that could be done with this story is to print flyer\’s and drop them on many of the those that will not see any of this, as the turn the eyes and heads. May you always be blessed with walls for the wind, a roof for the rain, a warm cup of tea by the fire, laughter to cheer you, those you love near you, and all that your heart might desireA happy St. Patrick\’s day to all whatever your current stage of life may be. I hope whatever it is, much better things to come.

Homeless are also people I work with. In spite of their bad smell and dirtiness I feel comfortable when they come in my office. Most of them are kind. They live like that for a long time. One was living in a container and we managed to settle him in shelter. He has also drinking problems. He has a roof over his head and meals now. It\’s temporary salvation. Hug,T

Awesome story my friend, it reminds me of my father in so many ways. He would take in people all the time, once we had a homeless blind man live with us for a time, and his new pup that he was trying to train as a seeing I dog. My mother would protest, but my dad always brought someone in the house that seemed to be less fortunate then us. During this time as well we did not have a lot to offer, but offer he did, a warm bed, food in the belly and a place to stay for a time..Thank you for the memories!! Wonderful story, and yes how many people do just look the other way or make judgements on those they do not know!Take careBarbie
